Hey everyone thanks for tuning in for todays episode! We are going to cover how to prevent a tree from dying! What I have done over the years if I see a dead limb on a tree I remove it (if possible) so that bugs/insects don't penetrate the rest of the tree. Think of trees and their limbs like us humans, if we have a nasty gash or loose a limb if we do nothing about it the infection can spread! Same thing with a dead branch or limb it can be a easy passage into the rest of the tree! So save the trees and cut off dead limbs!

Hi Jay! Thanks for sharing those excellent tips for saving a tree! Great precision felling on that one! I have had to do similar amputations on trees to save the main tree.

Jay, Did you think about sealing it with pruning sealer? I’ve tried it and also have left it raw like you did. Generally I’ve found that those I didn’t seal became a hollow after about 8-10 years. A spray paint style can of pruning sealer is only a few dollars, and may be worth it. Maybe try an experiment on your channel by doing one each way and checking the healing every 6 months or so.

Sorry if I missed this, but the dressing of the tree just entails making sure that the final cut reveals healthy wood so insects don’t return? I am in a residential area of a university town. Next to our place is a rental with a new landlord who has been told by a tree “care” company that several trees have rot/need to be cut down. They are all still leaving with what appear to be healthy crowns. They may be 111 years old, as an old farmstead was broken up into parcels, and the rental was built between the trees and a 111-year-old farmhouse, now also a rental. I feel strongly that someone without a vested interest in taking down the trees should make the determination of whether they just need trimming or do need to be fully cut down. I’m thinking our university extension office might be a good bet-but do you have any other recommendations? Thanks so much for this video!

Jay, as a arborist I have to tell you that’s a incorrect cut and process. You don’t cut into the calus tissue. Your teaching wrong.

I’ve done this a handful of times around the property and I haven’t had much issues with the main tree. Please advise as I’d like to correct myself
@hardknot
@hardknot 3 года назад
Hey Jay. Your supposed to cut just outside of the “collar”, for codom stem removal with no collar you want that cut at roughly 45 degrees or less, enough to let water run off and not collect but also creating the least amount of surface area seal . Longer diagonal cut= larger surface area. In general on a dead branch if calus tissue has begun to form you don’t want to cut it off, cut to it. The tree has to regrow the calus tissue to keep sealing.

Stay tuned for next week's episode of Dr. Jay, Tree Surgeon! I love my trees too. I give them all great big hugs every morning. Seriously, I do love my trees. Even the Eastern Red Cedars. Thanks for showing me how to save trees that have a dead branch growing out from them. Do you seal the open fresh wood with anything, or just leave it alone and let the tree heal on it's own?
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 3 года назад
I dont treat with anything, I did cut below the collar on this one, normally you leave the collar but the collar was dying so I figured the clean wood would have the best chance! I did this about 4 years ago to a tree out in the side of the house maybe ill go see how its doing and report back!

Hey there. First thank you for your videos and information. I have a tree in my front yard the only tree in my front yard. Some type of bore bug has got to it. And one of the 3 main column limbs that come off the trunk. Is mostly dead. And a good portion of the bark one fourth of the trunk has fell off and you can see the bore holes. Any suggestions. If the limb can be saved I would love that. I don't think I would want the tree still without it. It would just look like an eye sore.
@HomesteadJay

Hey Gerod! Once the bark falls off thats pretty much it! The bark is like the skin of a tree which carries all the nutrients! Once thats gone or more than 25% fallen off I hate to say but the tree is done with. There are some drastic measure than can be taken but just by what you said it seems like its a goner! Let me know!

Im sorry you have that tree that is dying! Sounds like a beautiful tree but like all things in nature there is a life cycle and they dont last forever. Its one thing to have a tree top that dies and the rest is healthy but it seems like yours is too far gone to be saved.

Good video, but not sure you cut it correctly. I'm not an arborist, let me start there. But I always thought you should cut just above the "collar" where the limb attaches to the main trunk. Not below it. I could be wrong, but I always thought the collar is what would grow over the wound and heat the tree.
@HomesteadJay
@HomesteadJay 3 года назад
You are correct! I should have addressed that but the collar on this one was dead so I was assuming the clean wood would have the best chance! I have cut and limbed trees before and kept the collar as it should be! Thanks for pointing it out I appreciate it!
