Thank you so much! This is so helpful. I'm trying to plan out how much money I need to save up and am juuust a little concerned if I'll manage. If you have any more tips on how to save money in Finland I'd gladly watch a part two :) And if by any means you could make a video about getting a job as a non-finish person studying in Finland I'd be very happy! Also - thank you for all the information you've put up already. I'm binge watching everything and taking notes to get an idea of what I'm signing up for if I get into Aalto :) Have a great day!

Hey and thanks so much for the genuinely nice words. I really do appreciate that :). To your comment and questions: I will definitely make more of these saving tips a bit later in the summer. Also, I have a video coming next week about the costs of living in Finland as a student where I go through a spreadsheet where I collected some of the largest living expenses you should be expecting. I hope that it gives you a better idea of what to expect after moving to the country. About job seeking, I think it is only fair to mention that finding a job in Finland as an international student is not easy in the beginning. It gets easier the farther you get with your studies as the majority of companies that employe highly educated people have English as their working language. However, getting a part-time job during your studies from e.g. the service sector is not easy as most of those jobs require you to speak Finnish. There are some exceptions of course, but I just want to be honest about it. Ive seen many friends struggle with it and my genuine suggestion would be to prepare as well as you can financially before your studies, apply for a scholarship and then progress with your studies at a fast phase so that you get to a point quickly where you can apply for jobs in your field of study. I think ive mentioned this in maybe one or two previous videos, but I currently work at a recruitment company that specialises in highly educated talents in the fields of business, IT and engineering so I got loads to say about this topic. My idea is to start focusing more on job seeking in early fall when most trainee-programmes start hiring people. I hope this helps you. If anything was left unclear or if you have anything else you'd like me to give my take on here in the comments, do let me know 👍

@@RoadtoFinnish Thank you for responding! I'm fortunate enough to be in EU and not have tuition fees, so that's why I'm going to apply in the first place. Lookin forward to the spread sheet! I did my layout, but maybe there is sth I missed. Finnish required for the service jobs, huh? I see... Better start learning as soon as I get through most of the recrutation process then. Thanks for the in depth response! Appreciate it :) Regards, Sophie

Hi, I'm an exchange student who is going to study in Finland next semester. Now, I just applied for a TYS dormitory (26th May) - it opened 1st May - and I'm wondering if I was too late. Do you think I need to look for other options from now on? or should I wait till they send me an email? I watched another video and in that video, you said there are only limited rooms and need to apply IN TIME. I think I'm late and worried what if I couldn't get acceptance from the TYS dormitory... Thank you a lot and hope to hear from you, don't know you can't check this comment cuz it is an old video though.

@RoadtoFinnish 3 года назад
Hey and thanks for the great question. I would not be worried if i were you. Having applied for a room on 26th of May is plenty early enough. The reason why i emphasise this is because a lot of people leave this to the last minute and basically apply a month or a few weeks before they move to Finland. Im sure that you should be fine 👍

What is the best time to apply for housing? As I have already applied through EnterFinland but have not faced the embassy yet due to the closure of the Finnish mission. Should I wait till I face the embassy or should I apply for housing now??
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 4 года назад
Hey man and thanks for the great question. In short, my suggestion is to apply right away (or as soon as the different housing providers allow you to). The current situation with covid-19 is unprecedented and no-one knows where this is headed and when. Things could change to either direction really quickly and before instructed otherwise by your university or by the Finnish immigration office, you should apply for a student apartment as you would if the situation was as normal. So my suggestions is that you should apply for an apartment right now. If it happens that you are offered an apartment but you still don't know when the Finnish borders are opened, you should contact the apartment provider for instructions. You have nothing to lose by applying right now. Hope this answered your question. Please let me know if you want me to elaborate a bit more.

Hey Oliver! Thank you so much for helping us get easier through this whole process! It means so much to all of us! ❤ I have one question. This may be irrelevant topic, but I'm interested in having work experience during my studies. I don't know what choices I have in Finland as an international student whose Finnish isn't great. Can I work only through internships that I get at the university (and btw when will I be offered one of those, I mean, at what year of my studies) or can I find some jobs outside of the university? If you have some examples or advice that would be great! Again, thank you so much for your time and effort!! 😀
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 4 года назад
Hey Anja! You are most welcome. Im just happy if me rambling is useful for people 😁. To answer your question: im currently working on a bunch of videos on this topic that I will start publishing near the end of the summer. There are so many things to talk about that there is no way I could cover in one video or here in the comments. However, to answer you question somewhat: universities in Finland do not, in general, offer internships to students. There are some mandatory internships for students in universities of applied sciences that are a part of their studies but most of these are not paid as they are a part of their curriculum. The majority of the job opportunities have to be found and applied to from outside the university. There are a bunch of ways to find open jobs in Finland including the university career services + recruitment companies like the one im employed by currently. The most important thing to note about this topic before coming to Finland is that you should not rely financially on finding an internship or summer job during your first year of studies. The job market for students is pretty competitive (naturally depending on your field of study) and it takes quite a lot of effort to get your first jobs (especially from your field of expertise). I can search for some detailed employment numbers from your field if you don't mind telling me what field you are looking to study in.
@anjamiscevic7225
@anjamiscevic7225 4 года назад
@@RoadtoFinnish So, you think that's hard to be employed in my first year? I kind of expected to find a job a help my family financially... I got admitted at Haaga-Helia Univeristy of Applied Sciences and my major is Business IT. Do you know something about that university? I mean is there something I should be prepared for? I know it's not one of the best, but it was the only one with late deadline (I had another plans, and then in April I "switched" to Europe). I'm planning to transfer to another, better Finnish university in my second year. Thank you for everything! Your videos and comments are sooo helpful for me! 💗
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 4 года назад
@@anjamiscevic7225 I tried to dig a bit deeper into the numbers from Haaga-Helia and I found out that your specific study programme (Business IT) is one of the best ones in terms of employment rates. The demand for skilled IT specialists, developers etc was extremely high before the current crisis and there was actually a huge shortage of skilled people in those sectors. So in terms of a normal situation, your field of study looks good. *However* I really need to mention two caveats here: 1. There is no guarantee that students get either a summer job or an paid internship after the first year. This is just how it is. The job market is most competitive for the first years of studies and it takes effort to get hired. So no, this is not a guarantee and I don't want to mislead you. 2. The current situation with Covid-19 has basically undone everything that is considered normal. The markets are simply halted and a lot of people are unemployed or furloughed from their jobs. Its impossible to say when things get back to normal, but also note that if you start your studies in September, you will have your first chance to apply for work next Spring. A lot can happen between now and then. I really don't want to discourage you but the situation is what it is and I really want to be honest here.

Can I pay my own tution fees by working (part time jobs) in finland ?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 4 года назад
Hi Nimantha and thanks for the good question. My understanding is that the tuition fee has to be paid in full (one semester at a time) in one instalment prior to the start of the each semester. This means that you can not pay the tuition whilst studying. As a disclaimer, this information is purely based on the public information that ive seen on the web and in university documents, but im pretty sure that it is how this goes. Also, please note that getting a part-time job in Finland especially early in your studies is very difficult if you do not speak Finnish. Most part-time jobs are in the service sector and the majority of these jobs require the applicants to speak Finnish. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule, but I do not want to give you a wrong picture of the job market here. Sorry if this disappoints, but I want to be 100% honest here.

I'm planning to do a mechanical or Automotive engineering degree, 1. How about Aalto university for engineering? 2. And what are the best universities for Automotive engineering or Mechanical engineering in Finland?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 4 года назад
@@nimanthasandaruwan7365 This is pretty simple. I would definitely recommend applying to Aalto Master's programme in Mechanical Engineering. Of course, im not an engineer, but I know people who have graduated from the programme and they are pretty darn good at what they do 🤘. Also, Aalto is the highest ranking University in Finland in the field of engineering so you can't go wrong with that. Since the next application period is in December, I think ill try to get someone from the school of engineering to be in one of my videos so that we can talk a bit about this topic. The Programme of Mechanical Engineering is naturally a wide programme with lots of different specialisations and opportunities. In addition, you can always take courses from the other school at aalto (business and arts) if you want to broaden your skill set beyond engineering. More information on the programme itself can be found here: www.aalto.fi/en/study-options/masters-programme-in-mechanical-engineering You can read about the curriculum in more detail here: into.aalto.fi/display/enmec/Curriculum+2020-2022 Also, here you can browse the different courses offered for students of mechanical engineering: → Common studies (31 ECTS): into.aalto.fi/display/enmec/Common+studies+2020-2022 → Advanced studies (30 ECTS): into.aalto.fi/display/enmec/Advanced+studies+2020-2022

@jenniferwonole3727
@jenniferwonole3727 3 года назад
hello how can i gain admission for social work and how much can a student make in a month
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 3 года назад
Hey Jennifer and thanks for the question! I do not have any previous experience with these degrees so please take everything I say with a grain of salt and do your own research on top of mine. What I found is that many schools that offer an English taught bachelors degree in social work require applicants to have at least a level B1 in Finnish language skills. However, the application process to bachelor level social work degrees is pretty much the same with all schools. If you are eligible, you will need to take an entrance exam (done online) that takes place in two phases. Those who pass the examination are usually invited to a personal interview. Both of these are then graded and the admission is done on a competitive basis. You can find more information e.g. about the Bachelor of Social Services at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences here: - Metropolia website: www.metropolia.fi/en/academics/bachelors-degrees/social-services - Opintopolku (website that holds information about all university programmes in Finland): studyinfo.fi/app/#!/korkeakoulu/1.2.246.562.17.51321810429 👆 do note that this is not the only programme in social work but its one of the better schools in the capital region. It is impossible to say how much a student can make per month working while studying. Finding a part-time job during your studies is in general difficult in Finland. Most part-time jobs that students (especially in the early stages of their studies) are not from their own field. This is especially true with medical and social fields because you need to have completed a certain amount of courses in order to even work in the field. I hope this helps you at least a bit. Sorry for not being able to give you more specific information.
