I quit alcohol, that did 2 things. I was able to fill my travel savings much faster and when I got to where I was going no alcohol on vacation really saves. No bars no wine with dinner no happy hours. Just great savings. Ty.

One thing I try to do for more expensive trips is spreading the big expenses. I've been planning an NYC trip (from Europe) more than a year in advance. Paid for the tickets 12 months prior. I've paid half of our Airbnb stay 2 months later and I'll pay the other half in a few months. Making the total cost of the trip much more bearable. I also have a spare bank account and every time a friend has to pay me back, or I earn money outside of my day job, I put it there. It's money I can spend without worrying it'll interfere with my monthly expenses. BTW I don't know if you know this, but in Belgium (and maybe other European countries) 'Wolters' is a name of a series of atlas books often used in schools 🙂

I was an alcoholic last year (three hundred and fourteen days sober and counting). I smartened up my act and decided to save all of my hard working residuals. I was tight throughout the spring, summer and fall. On November 18, 2023 - December 9, 2023 I ended up going on a solo backpacking adventure to a two continent, two country, twelve city exploration of Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Tarifa & Sevilla) and Morocco (Tanger, Chefchaouen, Fes, Merzouga/ Sahara Desert, Marrakech, Casablanca and Rabat). Logistically it went smooth (prebooking is a must), Hotels and hostels were pleasant but it was grueling and lonely at times. It was an educational experience of people, culture, gastronomy and I learned alot about myself. Trip of a lifetime. I have yet to remove my smile from my dumb ass. Much respect for your travel expertise. I took some of your advice for research (always) and you are exactly correct, I had that mentality of not spending on the un-necessities and just focus on yourself, health, and enjoy God's greatest gift... Life!

My main saving tip is : Cook your own food. Yes its costs time and effort, but its much healthier and cheaper, especially when you cook in larger batches. Also make sandwiches at home and bring them along, with some easy fruits like banana's. Maybe even bring a thermos with coffee or tea. The amount youll save when you do this is actually quite crazy. I call those " micro expenses" , you know, a sandwich here, a coffee there, but you are massively overpaying for things and because its just a couple of dollar each time, you might not be fully aware about what this actually adds up to over the course of the month or year. Cutting these $5 a day or so, and thats for things you dont even especially enjoy but are just doing purely of convenience, can easily pay for a full holiday when you look at the yearly amount.

Years ago, my hubby used to go out for lunch every day at work. When I mentioned how he was spending over $150 a month on fast food lunches, he immediately bought himself a lunch box & began taking his lunch every day. Healthier, and definitely a huge savings! He maybe goes 1-2X a month now, and the family budget sure appreciates it!
@ageoflove1980
@ageoflove1980 5 месяцев назад
@@REALcatmom Yep, it just requires some discipline and planning, but the true savings are in the small daily amounts. That $3 coffee gets me a 500gr pack that will last me a week, so thats like a 80% reduction in expenses on coffee alone. The trick is to not see it as $3 a day, but as $1000 a year. And then it gets easier because do you really want to spend a grand yearly on "not having to bring a thermos" ? Me personally at least, can see a whole world of things I rather spend a thousand on.

I totally agree with you. Home cooking is way cheaper. I followed The Latte Factor Budget years ago and still do. It is by far the easiest and most effective budget out there. It sticks with me to this day. If I order pizza for $40, I can't help but think what a waste. Instantly, I think what groceries I could buy for $40. Same with ordering a burger and fries. It's usually around $12. You can buy all the ingredients and toppings for that amount and have several burgers. It's so ingrained in me already.

I grew up very lower middle class, obsessed with Carmen Sandiego and never left the country until I was in my 20s because my parents couldn't afford it. My experience is for those who don't have to support a family or are just starting out their post-college life. I've pretty much arranged my life so I can travel even though I don't make much money in my field. I rent an apartment instead of owning a house, I only try to date others where travel is their priority, and I work jobs that are flexible enough to take time off. Plus an added bonus for return travel to places I've been, I've made lots of friends overseas who said next time I visit, that I can stay with them. Besides getting an authentic experience, it helps cut back on lodging costs dramatically. Best of luck to everyone out there who wants to travel! In the words of Marty McFly, "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."

I'm a person who's been retired due to medical issues for between 15 - 20 years. I live on less than $2,000 from SSDI. In the last 8 years I've been to Europe 4 times. I budget my travels, though having visited London each time hasn't helped. I have family there, so that helps, too. I'm planning for a trip in 2026 to see Hungary, Romania, Czechia, Poland. I'm trying to save for a months trip. Being in my mid-60s, this is something I never thought I could accomplish. Also, growing up in the 1960s, all of these countries were part of the Russian federation. I took a 3 month, 9000 mile road trip around the USA last year. If you watch your spending, you can go to the most places if you keep your budget in mind and realize that you may not stay as long as you'd like. I also cut out cable 7 years ago and only have a Roku for my entertainment system. Have a great year, Wolters family.

100 euro (?) a day just for food in the Netherlands? For me this is not budget travel. The budget would be spending less then 50 euro a day on food and accomodation. You can buy three (thin) frozen pizzas for 6 euro in the Netherlands if you care for checking markets promotions and have an oven or a microwave where you stay, so... Very good advice Mark, excellent video. You mentioned vacation credit card debt so here's another tip: pay off those credit cards every month to avoid interest! Using your tips will help with that because you're not spending as much money. Coffee: while you're in Target by bags of Starbucks or your favorite coffee there. If you have a Keurig, don't buy the pods, buy a couple of the reusable pods and fill those with that bagged coffee, which saves both money and the environment. I think Keurig pods are recyclable now, but they weren't at first, and some of them still may not be; regardless using the reusable ones will save you money. Cable TV: People over 40: not a bad idea. People under 40: you still have cable?? 😂😅🤣 We dropped cable in 2003 as my wife was addicted to the news post 911. And with a TV antenna, you will be surprised how many of those non-premium cable channels you will get with the aerial on the digital channels. For example, here in the Chicago area, channel 9 has the main channel is 9.1 and other cable channels at 9.2 through 9.4.

0:50 Yep, I’m taking my graduation trip in a couple months and even though it’s a pretty simple trip I started planning & saving two years ago. It also made saving easier because I could spread it out over years rather than months. Our host had other videos on this, but reining in the cost of travel itself can also help. I think we 🇺🇸 are still a bit hung up on the 20th century mindset where travel to Europe is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. That can lead to overplanning, overspending, and coming back wondering whether it was worth it.

It is unrealistic to think that we can just instantly give up all the treats we enjoy (some may be able to but not me. LOL) for the sake of travel. Also, thinking about kids; I have two. If you say to them we can't get this treat because we are saving for a really fun place to go, they can get frustrated because 1. They lose out on something they like and 2. It is in the future and NOT right now. LOL. Thanks for the mental shifts; that is really helpful to me.

What I do is track flights for at least 2 months for 4-6 different travel dates. And book the best one. I usually book 4-6 mos out and save at least $125/wk or more. And as a solo traveler that’s $2000-$3000+ saved for my trip. I stay in hostels which can reduce your accommodation stay by 40% or more. And with breakfast included that saves another $100/wk or more. I don’t eat a big lunch I just have some snacks or street food. And I set aside $250 per trip as try not to spend money if I need it I have it and if not it goes right back into my account for my next adventure. I travel light and I’ll usually check a empty bag to hold any souvenirs

Awesome advice that it may take 2 to 3 years to save up for a nice trip. Especially for a milestone trip.

Great advice! I save money for traveling by cooking at home, drinking tap water (I never buy pop and drink alcohol only on special occasions) rarely shopping for new clothes. I eat out when traveling! I usually stay in hostels and use public transport. I try to travel light: less room to bring big souvenirs!

When I was younger my buddies and I would take off to the beach on a moments notice and sleep in the car or cheap accommodations. I once slept on a concrete balcony to stay an additional day at the beach. But, these days I like to plan where I'll sleep each night and have my own transportation. I don't stay in the priciest places, unless it's somewhere I've always wanted to stay, but I don't stay in the cheapest places either. As an example, last year I stayed in North Vancouver instead of Vancouver which turned out to be a great decision. I hod a great view of the Vancouver skyline and as it turned out they have music and a party on the pier every weekend during the summer which was just outside of my hotel. With a little planning you can enjoy your trip and not spend a fortune. But, be prepared to spend some money no matter where you go.

Great video!!!I really am being more attentive to shopping! Id rather shop in Europe, so every-time I feel like buying clothes, I think Id rather buy this item abroad! And it’s much more fun having an item that you bought in Europe anyway. I have so many treasured things which I bought on my travels. And yes to the eating at home, healthier too. Thank you

Great advice! Can you do a video sharing advice on how your family budget/plans so far in advance? What is your process? I.e do you save a lump sum and go from there or do you use current prices and save to that?

Every person who tells us "Saw your European pictures and posts this year, I wish had that kind of money", always drives luxury cars and have huge houses and lots of toys, and I respond "Depends on your priorities"

This is so true. Its priorities. People always manage to spend their money on whats important. If travel is important, you find a way to do it.

Don't buy a new car... Don't over insure yourself... (I'm not saying not to have insurance!) We drive two cars that are both paid off. It's really about making travel the thing that you spend your money on, assuming you are otherwise in a stable situation.

Unpopular savings tip: If you live in a well-designed big city, don’t own a car. There’s so much you save on gas, parking, tolls, insurance, and maintenance, and you can replace it with Uber, biking, public transit, which will be infinitely less expensive

Or walking really. It's healthy and it's the cheapest way to get around. If you have enough time or your destination is not very far at least. I walk 2,4 km to work every day and then back. I like it but I know I'm crazy XD.

I just readjusted my spending and committed to putting aside $100 off of each pay cheque and saw how much will add up even just by June of this year, and it blew my mind. Not enough to go on a vacation (unless there is a smoking deal) but still enough to go "wow".

Mark thanks for the advice on saving money. Turns out one of your examples was dead on. We pay for cable and never watch it! I cancelled that today and I'm now saving about $130 a month. BTW my next trips are to Liverpool in April and Peru in September.

I never believed it until several years ago when I did the 52 week challenge. Little bits every week put into savings and at the end of the year, I had over $1300 which was a ticket to Europe. Then came the plague and I had to wait .... delayed gratification.

These points are totally on point. I save save save and I am able to take two trips to Europe every year. These trips are one week long each. I know many people who say that's not worth it to them for one week each, but hey, it's two weeks out of the year I am able to go see the cliffs in Portugal, to eat tapas in Spain, to walk Hyde Park in London, to cry at the beauty of the Trevi Fountain in Rome. That's two weeks every year of my life well spent. Don't look at travel influencers who travel full time or for months at a time and think that thats the only type of travel that counts. Some of us can travel still but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to look like a wealthy person's version of traveling. I do make small sacrifices during the year (ex. Skipping certain concerts/shows, etc....)in order to afford my trips comfortably. My other piece of advice is to save your COINS!!! I have a coin jar, and before each trip I cash it into my account and then put it towards my trip. There's usually $100 in there each time or more!

Got tickets for the Olympics back in January 2023. I make sure I focused my Amex gold card for groceries, and dinning(4x points) to get my flights because accommodations are going to be thru the roof in Paris. I usually don’t like traveling in the summer to Europe but I’ve been wanting to go to both for so long, and the Games are playing there, so I’ll manage. Retired so I can stay longer, and see slower between my planned events. Flights are now covered, so now budget for accommodations, and food. He’s right. Plan plan plan.

I’ve gotten great advice for you for years now . I do have a savings travel/me account to fund my travels . I knew my daughter would be graduating from med school in 2023 and wanted to take her to Europe and do/spend a lot so starting saving for that 2.5 years in advance. Cut out dish network saves enough to pay for a hotel stay. Use CC’s to pay for everything possible and use the miles/points for free international flights and hotels when possible. ❤

Hey Marc, was wondering if your able to subsidize the bulk of your travel costs using points & miles
@donaldhughes6146
@donaldhughes6146 5 месяцев назад
One thing that you might add is credit card points/miles. Even cards with an annual fee may be worth it if it gets you a free flight(s) or pay for your hotel expenses that would end up being worth more than the annual fee every year.

Know what items cost and if they really on sale. Prime rib roast goes on sale every Christmas time in our city. And if you get it ‘in the bag’, you can cut it up youself and save another $3 per pound. Prime rib is then just a little more expensive than hamburger. Get a freezer.
