I collect my okra seeds during the growing season. I let the pod grow large and become hard and dry, to the point where the seeds rattle inside. They come out a dark green, though they're dry. I still lay them up and dry them further. The okra I grew this year was from seeds that were 7 or 8 years old.

Hi! This is very good info for me because the last time I tried to harvest seeds, the seeds looked shriveled about a week later. I tossed them because I didn’t think they were good. How do you let the pod dry? Do you keep the okra on the vine then let us die like he did or do you pick it when it’s big then set it out on the counter to dry out?

@@rlopez18m I usually let it dry on the stalk. The seeds inside will be green.

@IX eleven sounds cool... We live far up north but we do get hot dry summers... I'm good at watering and tending to the gardens every day... I grew egg plants this year and I didn't think they would grow up here.... I got some smaller ones but I do stick my plants close to each other... Do they like full sun or....rather have bit shade? I think there full sun from what I've seen on line...

I tie a string to a pod marking it about mid-summer and let that one grow, then fry and eat the rest. If I don't mark the pods I want to save I end up cutting them by accident. Then after it frost and kills the plant I cut the stems near the roots then I hang them upside down letting them dry on the stem in a shed for a few weeks. I get fat perfectly dried seeds in every pod about 5-6mm wide.

Thanks I will throw my great big green spineless in the trash I thought I could dry it out in a laundry room or in the garage off the plant I will instead let the fall plant die back and do it this way for my seeds next year...Thanks Sheila Love your seeds 💯 percent germinate!!

I bought something around 40 different seeds types from yall this year. Had 2 freezes and didnt get to eat even 1 plant. Ps love okra and it makes an awesome soup thickener that most wont even taste. I think people who dont like okra is just because of texture.

Hi, was wondering if my okra seeds are still viable. We got a good freeze (NYC) before the okra was fully dry on the stalk. I harvested the seeds anyway and am letting them dry on a plate indoors. What do you think?

If you're planning on saving seeds, you have to do something to prevent cross pollination. Okra comes in about 4 to 30 percent. The best way, is only one variety a year, but there are other ways. Definitely worth putting out another video to cover that.

Am I the only one that noticed the squirrels at about 4:22 climb the tree behind him. I usually wait until the pods start to split. I usually grow Clemsen Spineless. I had a relative that never grew Okra before so they tried cooking it when it was woody. I had to tell them there error after they told me how woody they felt in their mouth.

i like the idea of saving seed more than the act. It's awfully fussy work in some veg and flowers. Eggplants were a pain this year, and borage was no fun. That's the same reason i prefer sugar snap peas to English peas--after 15 minutes of podding peas, i wonder why I grew this irksome plant that's only about my 30th favorite veg anyway!

When you get ready to save seeds, and this goes for any plant, to you continue to water them and let nature take its course, or do you withhold water to force them to dry?

I am looking for okra seeds for a type of okra that is super small. I ate it in a stew in Jordan. It is maybe an inch in length. I cannot find it anywhere. Do you know of this variety or is it just picked really early? Thank you.

Luke, any comments on if plant had been pollinated or if plant was an open pollinate ? An observation with Clemson Okra this time of year in October, the spines that are just beginning to split open on dried fruit are another good indicator that the pod is seed bearing-ripe for harvest

If you grew the okra varieties in the same garden, won't the varieties be crossed when you plant them next year?

@goatkidmom
@goatkidmom 3 года назад
@@andreabirchard9110 I googled it. Okra can cross-pollinate, even though it is also self-fertile. So yeah, you have to grow only one kind in your garden or put bags over the flowers to prevent the bees from getting through. I'm sticking with the Clemson spineless. Who needs okra with spines anyway?
@andreabirchard9110
@andreabirchard9110 3 года назад
Hahaha, well I'm up here in zone 2 Canada, and I am going to give it a go in my 2021 summer garden! I've got seeds for the Clemson's Spinless and a dwarf variety because I think for my zone those are the best option. I did want to toss a burgundy in the mix for fun and I'm a compulsive seed saver so I'm happy there's a way to keep the true to variety! Hopefully we all like it since it's absolutely not a food we have here (you can get it in the frozen section no one I know does lol)! Something that prolific needs to at least be tried!
@goatkidmom
@goatkidmom 3 года назад
@@andreabirchard9110 Zone 2? Wow. I hope it works out for you. They like heat, you may have to start them indoors. I love okra, but my family doesn't. Maybe you should try some bagged okra first?
@andreabirchard9110
@andreabirchard9110 3 года назад
Oh I'll absolutely start them indoors and then grow them in the high tunnel throughout the summer for the extra heat! Don't be fooled by the zone 2, the season is short but the summer's can be unbearably hot, my only concern is that the heat might not be for a long enough period of the day! Worst case I loose a few square feet of garden space to a failed experiment! Definitely wouldn't be the first time! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Maybe cut both ends off for air flow? I thought I was saving them from doom, lol 😂! By the way, the Texas Hill Country sound kinda like the Star of David! HELP‼️

Those okra won’t breed true because they were planted too close together which will result in cross-pollination. The resulting seed will produce a hybrid plant. I’m sure he doesn’t plant these and just needed to make a video for the day.
