Apparently the couple rhubarb plants at my parent's house are likely over 100 years old. It was my mom's grandmother's house, built in 1915. If you find a spot it really likes, it can outlive you

Our rhubarb came from my great grandfathers house. My grandfather took a split when he moved out. then my father took a split of my grandfathers when he moved out and I took a split of my dads and my kids can take a split of mine. and I'm 40. Who knows where my great grandfather got it. could have split it off a 100 year old plant already.

I dont know that they will be slow enough to make it to the last frost here at the end of May........ I'm trying to give some away to friends and family, i already have too many rhubarbs! HELP! LOL

Thank you for this video! My question for you is: I am trying to let seed mature on the stalk, but they fall off easily when even wind blows. Should I collect it green, or let it go and see if I will have anything left in June. Half of the seeds are on the ground already all green. Any input on this matter is greatly appreciated!
@Growyourheirlooms
@Growyourheirlooms 3 года назад
If they are falling off, you have no choice but to pick them. They may brown up after picking but mine have never fallen off early. you may try to lay the stalk down. That may help. Either way, roll up a few of the green ones in a wet paper towel and see if they germinate.

What about putting a paper bag or long towel around the stalk so they don't blow off and the damn deer 🦌 don't eat it all up

Do you know if any animals (birds, rabbits...) eat rhubarb seeds. We have 25 rhubarb plants and do not need anymore. But I like the flowers, and with this many plants, letting the flowers grow does not decrease the size of our haul of rhubarb enough to bother cutting the flowers out. But I would love to know if there is another use for the seeds besides growing more rhubarb from them.

I have guilt! I should have watched your video before I pulled the seeds off ... Will they work if they're starting to fall off, so you go ahead and pull them all off? They've not dark brown :/ ... If I let them dry, will that maybe help them propagate?

If they're falling off on their own then they are fine. I always let mine dry out in my garage out of direct sunlight for a few days then put them in paper bags

Hello, great video thanks for making it. I have Rhubarb in one small spot in yard, but I am told it is a rare type and neighbors all want to pick it for pie's. Its been growing at house since about 1933. I would like to know how would I get seeds from it and then plant them to make more rhubarb grow in garden? please
@Growyourheirlooms
@Growyourheirlooms Год назад
A few things will make a rhubarb plant flower. Age, Lack of Water, Heat and any other kinds of stress. The older a plant gets, the more likely it will bolt. You could encourage it to bolt but you might damage the plant. It will eventually bolt on its own. The problem is, if it's happy it may be many years. If the plant is large enough, you could split the crowns to grow new plants. That's the best way to duplicate it and that's what I would do
@GrenPara
@GrenPara Год назад
@@Growyourheirlooms Hello, Thanks for the fast reply. So I should split the root/bulb where the stalks of rhubarb come out of? Does that mean there would simply be the same amount but in a bigger area? I used to have 3 patches/areas but about 10 years ago when I went away for a week someone dug up 2 of the patches. I searched my area for years but could never see anyones yard groing any.
@Growyourheirlooms
@Growyourheirlooms Год назад
@@GrenPara Yes it splits where the stalks come out. Best time is in early spring. The crowns kind of split the way you split potatoes with eyes. Make sure a stalk is at each node

I was always told not. To let rhubarb go to seed orbit will kill your plant. So that’s not true? Is it true a frost makes them poisonous? I didn’t pick any this year because of frost.
@Growyourheirlooms
@Growyourheirlooms 4 года назад
The leaves are poisonous any time of the year. And if the plant goes to seed, the crowns will still survive and regrow the following year. As for frost, they are very cold hardy.

@Growyourheirlooms
@Growyourheirlooms 2 года назад
Thanks, they are on their way. Rhubarb does not like really hot weather so it may be tough but give it a try. You might want to google growing rhubarb in Florida. As for replanting, no. My victoria rhubarb plants have been in the same location for 9 years and they keep reproducing and dropping seeds. Once you plant them, you're good for life.

@@dawnheller4859 You won't get much the first year. It is recommended you don't start harvesting until the second year. I started mine indoors in Jan and transplanted them in April. You could try a few direct sown since you don't get much frost.

Are rhubarb open pollen and not hybrid? If my plant from nursery not hybrid and can I expect that the seed be true to the species type when growing from seed next year and how long does it take a rhubarb to grow up from seed to good harvesting sized stems?
@Growyourheirlooms

Depends on the type. Mine are "Victoria" which are open pollinated. If grown from seeds, it will take a few years for them to grow large enough to start harvesting.
