Cross pollination isn't all bad the Cross may not grow true to form. But you can work on such plants by back crossing back to the mother seed stock and eventually stabilise as long as you cull all the plants that are not fitting what you are seeing and looking for. If they struggle in your environment leaving the best plants then testing the fruit and see how many boxes it ticks and move on each season repeat

Hello Milkwood, I'm glad I found your channel. I created a seed bank too for my home use to save my locally adapted seeds. When there was a lockdown, it was difficult to get some seeds. As for me, I only had to get seeds from my stash! Let's connect.Thanks for sharing 😊

The way I save tomato seeds is to scoop seeded parts from several tomatoes into a tall container add water, then stick blend it. Next strain out the seeds with a sieve. Pour off the unneeded liquid, then reincorporate the seeds and add more clean water. Then blend and strain the seeds once more, to remove any residual tomato pulp. Lastly I spread the seeds on parchment paper to air dry for at least 2 days. Once completely dry, break the seeds apart with clean hands. Then store in a jar, or baggie with a small silica gel packet. This method is quick, clean, easy, and best of all no mold!

Thanks for the great advice! I struggle to save seeds because I live in a very dense urban area with other people growing the same plants but different varieties very close to my yard and deck. Good to know which plants I should save seed from and which I should buy seeds for to avoid cross-pollination.

I didnt know you can do thqt with tomatoes. How amazin. I saved my sugar magnolia peas seeds, those peas wwere so beautiful and purple. They also attracted an amazing amount of bees to the garden. All the bees had soo much fluffy pollen on their legs.

How long do seeds last for?
@Milkwood
@Milkwood 3 года назад
It depends a little on the type of seed, and the conditions you keep them in. Most seeds will have good viability for a couple of years at least, and they'll last even longer in a cool, dark place.
