I was coming to say the same thing. It's like the new Guard Combat Patrol. The entire Patrol box is just the models from the Cadia Stands army box without the codex, cards, etc...

Yeah I was gonna say that too. It’s the sister’s monopose set where you get only 1 load out for everything which is why is such good value because it’s less stuff and less flexibility than buying everything separately. Also the Arco flagellants are much nicer sculpts in the box of 10.

Just to piggyback on that, GW seems to have gone through a weird time (cost cutting maybe?) where they released models in boxes on sprues that didn't make sense for wider release. I believe the current Space Marine Combat Patrol was on instance (were they 8th edition launch?), but then Sisters, the Chaos Venomcrawler/Obliterators, even the Necron Royal Court. The new Guard army box turned combat patrol seems to break this trend. I think they're all the actual retail models. Maybe Leagues of Votann release did too, I'm not sure.

I could see that. They gotta do something with all of those unbought starter sets haha. The elite edition necron half would be perfect just by adding another unit of warriors/scarabs. Will be interesting to see what they do for them because theres no way that box is compatible with this game without really fudging the rules/stats of the night scythe.

I think the new CP is a lord, 3 scarabs, 10 warriors, 3 of the sword guys (can't remember their names) plasmacite and the big robot. I have that patrol and a space marine one ready and painted.

@@intzbk1 Im actually currently working on the Necron myself as well. I love when the community can predict such an obvious GW move as simply recycling the previous starter sets haha. I predicted it myself in this same video but I thought they would simply add another unit of warriors and scarabs but looks like they went with the doomstalker which makes more sense as every CP box has one big hitter in it

If you’re getting an overpriced sprue you don’t want for cheap, are you really saving money? I actually like the tzaangor models, but those upgrade sprues are wayyyy overpriced.

That's another good point. You can get those boxes with up to 20% discount off of the Gdubs price, sometimes even more in e. g. clearance sales.

At my FLGS this box costs 100€. If you consider it comes with 5 kits plus a character it means you can resell 3-4 kits plus the magus at like 50-60% off, recoup, and keep at least one unit for free from each box. I see folks doing that on the local second-hand portal constantly.

Who is that box for? Who wants that many Tzaangors? Me. I do. I have 40 of them and love the kit. It's fun to put together and has so many options for mixing and matching bits. Plus I use the blades for all sorts of conversions. Also, I play Tzeentch and Beastmen in AoS, so I get good use out of them. It's a bad box for new TSons players, but a good box for Tzeentch players in general. Luckily, the Tzaangors with chainblade and pistol are objectively worse than the blades right now, so there's no problem with just building those, which can be easily used in AoS. However, I'm half hoping and half dreading that the chainblades/pistols will be a decent option in 10th. Dreading cuz then I'll buy one of these Combat Patrols, but hoping cuz beastmen with 40k weapons are dope as hell. I also kinda need 5 more Scarab Occult, but that's another problem lol.

What GW has said (a few times) in their own articles is that the Combat Patrol "game mode" will use the current boxes. It wouldn't be the first time they went back on the publicity if they did change it but with CP rules written for these boxes, I reckon you're 99+% safe with that box.

I used to think the same thing. However, Adam’s old video on the GW pricing model gave me some perspective, whereby less frequently purchased minis are marked-up. Generally speaking, named heroes will only be bought once, and then only by collectors of that particular faction (excepting display painters). To make it worth the cost of producing a quality hero GW needs to recoup it’s money. Rick Priestly also mentioned this in an interview in 5G4D; when the ‘money men’ took-over running GW, they actually tried to stop them making heroes because they lost the company cash, not realising that without heroes no-one would buy the troops and vehicles that are lucrative for GW!

The article you mention doesn't show the currently available CP boxes for space marines or 'nids; in both cases their pic is the parts of the Leviathan box that will have CP rules. General expectation (like Editor Atom says) is that the present boxes will get replaced pretty soon.

@@TheKrenshar yes, that's exactly my point. The current CP box for space marines is 17 marines and a tank. Given that CP boxes tend to be around 150-180 dollars, do you think the new Space Marine CP box is really just going to be the 12 marines that are in the Leviathan CP picture? I think it's far more likely that it will contain more than that and you just don't use all of the units when you play CP. If that is the case, it reframes the question this video is asking for some players. If all you care about is playing CP then the question isn't if the CP box is cheaper than buying everything in it separately. The question is how much are you saving buying the CP box vs just buying the minimum units needed to play Combat Patrol? Likely you are still saving, but not as much as the video states.

@@mjcathcart Then I had misunderstood your point in part. Looking around the existing CP boxes, the only ones I would anticipate not using the full box would be Custodes plus maybe eldar (perhaps only fielding 3 of the 6 jetbikes), tau (dropping a character dependent on how they treat the ghostkeel) and sisters (not using the 3 arco-flagellants would be my guess, as they have a lot of units in that box). This is all going by my gut though and I've not tried a points-cost comparison across the boxes at 9th ed values or anything. My expectation is that the next space marine CP box will indeed just be those 12 infantry models, all push-fit and available only in starter boxes, the CP and Leviathan - in fact I'm pretty sure the full infernus squad is two sets of the same sprue of five models, the sergeant and grenade-lobbing marine having the same body). So I'm anticipating it either being cheaper than most CP boxes or else one of the worst for savings at about $10 (assuming $60 for terms, $30 for half an infernus squad, $40 per character for $170 value-equivalent). Alhough it wouldn't overly surprise me if terminators with build options get priced at more like $70, which would arguably raise the technical saving but aren't the exact same models, as is the case with the sororitas CP box. Alternatively I note that the image for that article is missing Custodes, Necrons and both the current marine and 'nid boxes. So it could just be that they were victims of layout decisions, actually aren't going anywhere and we're jumping to conclusions. I think that very unlikely for the 'nids though since there are new termagants, while the Necrons box appears to be dead, but if any army were to get two CP boxes, it's going to be generic marines.

I hear you, it's an interesting situation for them. Clearly I don't think the combat patrols were designed and published with 10th edition in mind, therefore some are better than others. Clearly they have two options, adjust the combat patrol boxes content to make them more balanced or have to magically do a hack job on the relevant combat patrol data sheets to balance. Ideally combat patrol data sheets are as close to table top data sheets in terms of stats and abilities.

It will be these boxes. Maybe not for the Necrons (because flyer) and maybe not for the Space Marines and Tyranids (because Leviathan) but if they don’t make Combat Patrol lists for the current boxes, then they’ve wasted everyone’s time and 10th edition will fail. Thanks for watching!

it's probably safe to assume that the Combat Patrol lists won't be that granular when it comes to unit upgrades/options, like "you MUST assemble one dude with a flamer, you MUST give this vehicle this turret weapon", etc. For example for Guard will probably be along the lines of "Infantry squad, sergeant can have X, Y, Z loadout, two models can replace lasgun with one of the following: X, Y, Z.". I wouldn't fret too much.

From their latest Combat Patrol preview - "To keep things balanced, the weapons options for the units have been fixed for all the Combat Patrol datasheets, so there’s no need to fret about your character and unit equipment prior to a game. You don’t need to worry about which guns to give your Chaos Space Marine Havocs, for example. "

Short answer; GW hasn't explicitly said. I already have that same issue, with my existing admech force not having the load-out shown for the CP box. So I'll be using the closest equivalent models I do have to count-as/proxy while I give CP rules a go within my gaming group. And with the weapon load-outs being set, an opponent ought to be fine with you saying that (for instance) a melta-gun counts as a flamer for a game.

Don't spend money on the rulebook, the core rules will be available as a free PDF directly from GW when 10th launches, plus it will get errata within a month so the physical book will be quickly obsolete. Rules for all armies will initially be available in an Index format rather than a codex one, that is also supposed to be free directly from GW. If you want to start anywhere, buy some models you think look cool and start the fun parts of building and painting your models. Rule of cool always wins because model rules will fluctuate wildly with editions and errata, so you might as well get something you enjoy the hobby side with instead of trying to chase the mutable text associated with them.

From what has been said on Warhammer Community, unit rules will be free downloads and each army will have one set of Detachment rules for download. Each codex will have more detachments for that army, we don't know yet if unit rules for any new models will be in their codex or online. For your BA specifically, their faction focus article is up later this week, which might give you more information.

You will be fine, they have shown some combat patrol data sheets and it seems to be designed to work however you build it. For example, the eventual multi part terminator captain sprue will have multiple weapon options like thunder hammer, claws etc. the one you use in combat patrol is always using a relic blade. It’s not ambiguous because he only has the one option. I imagine for something like infiltrators/incursors they will either lock you to one load out and it doesn’t matter how you build them, or use a Phobos marine profile with mixed rules. It won’t be ambiguous because each combat patrol has set contents, so it’s not like the main game where you’d need to repeatedly remember which unit is which.

10th edition is due to launch during June so you shouldn't have long to wait, at least. But if you want to get started sooner, one option would be to get the box for another marine combat patrol (but not Grey Knights), leave off the upgrade sprues when building (unless there's a cool bit or five that you want to use) and paint them as you please. Except for the Grey Knights box and the Space Wolves Lieutenant, the units are all available to any marines army. And you can still use the combat patrol rules for whichever box you bought, however you paint your models.

They’re gorgeous models, but they’ve also just got a bunch of fiddly bits to paint. If you compare, say, the Sororitas Rhino to the Standard Rhino, you’ll see just how many little gribbly bits there are. I’ve been “working on” the same exorcist on and off for about a year. It’s “almost done” but then I’ll find some other detail I haven’t thought about painting yet.

They’re small and have lots of detail - even more than the Astra Militarum. I’d have to figure out a very specific way to speedpaint them. Thanks for watching!
