Oh man! Thanks for helping us about this. I'm from Brazil and I'm also teaching english to a friend and I she's from Minas Gerais, which is a place that anybody speak words with "R" sound. They used to use the "h" sound instead. So it's something like that: Hadio (radio) and it's so hard to teach her to change this "R/H" and make her speak like "Restaurant, Radio..." but I'm going to use your video.. let's see if I can do it 😄 Thanks a lot!
@7MPhonemicEnglish
@7MPhonemicEnglish Год назад
American (r) is a vowel. You can sustain it until you run out of breath and it sounds the same from start to finish. It's the single monophthong vowel in the word 'drt'. Usually we use the combination of 'er' to represent the sound (ie 'better', 'gather') but that's only because we were brainwashed into believing that (r) is a consonant which led to the false notion that we needed to insert a vowel.
@Vagabondobiondo
@Vagabondobiondo Год назад
You're totally right in practicality; that's exactly how I teach it to students. I think the speech science wonks have termed it a 'semi-consonantal vowel', though. Which means essentially what you said, but with some weird technicality which gives it a consonant flavor.
@7MPhonemicEnglish
@7MPhonemicEnglish Год назад
@@Vagabondobiondo Yeah. It creates difficulty using vowels as if they are consonants. It's hard to figure out what we're doing with our mouth parts as well. I believe we do similar things with the word 'coordination' where a /w/ approximate may be used between the two /o/'s which gives the second /o/ a consonant flavor but we tend to recognize the /w/ as the consonant sound but we do the same thing with the 2nd /r/ in the word 'error' where we do a vowel /r/, consonant flavored /r/ and then another vowel /r/, an ill-begotten word for certain but we're stuck with it.

I have doubts about the pronunciation of the word "Cure". I'm aware the this word begins with some sort of cluster /k/ as in cat + /y/ as in yes, so we have /ky/. However, the Vowel sound in this word kind of tricks me up. I don't know for sure if it's /or/ as in more o if it's /er/ as in her. Sometimes I even hear this word pronounced with some kind of /oo/ as in food /kyoor/. It's so confusing. Is there any standart pronunciation or ALL three pronunciation are fine? /kyor/, /kyer/, /kyoor/? What the heck!
