This CANNON MX492 is the MOST difficult printer I've used IN MY LIFE!! I have been trying for AGES to get the scanner to work! THANK YOU, THANK YOU for clarifying how to scan!
Truly appreciate the video--Have had this printer several years and love it, but never had the patience to follow the manual directions without getting irritated! Now I am scanning at a fast pace, which is what I wanted the dang thing for 3.5 yrs ago! Thanks :)
Had this printer for years bruh! And until today just right now, after watching your vid…i finally got the top loader to scan. Always thought i was doing something wrong or it just wasn’t working right. Never realized it ONLY works by way of using system prefs on mac. Like u, i am the same, all apple. Apple to air drop prints on all devices. iPads, iPhones, the MacBook and the iMac is hardlined, using the usb cable…that i,too…had to go get myself. But necessary for scanner. All was fine except i could never get the top loader to work….until just now today! So thank you for that.
Btw. Looking at other comments-I can identify with “I was ready to throw it out and get a new printer “. Thought it was just too old. You saved a Canon Printer!!
Ok I figured it out but thank you for your tutorial it really came in handy once I downloaded the driver. (I’m computer challenged) Thanks for your help❤
"the buttons on the top don't really do anything when you hit scan..." ... very true, I sat at my computer for at least 15min wondering why I wasn't getting any scanned documents. thanks so much for your help! this was awsome ... just a note for PC owners, might have to click the mx490 series version that is the scanner, not the printer. for whatever reason on my PC it likes to show 3 of the same printers but one of them is the scanner.
As of Fall 2021 this video is still the most helpful one I’ve seen. On windows I had to download the Microsoft Scan app to adjust the settings he explains in the video.
This helped me a lot! I couldn't figure out why when I was trying to scan a single page it kept showing up as separate images. I changed the settings after watching your video. New subbie. Thanks!
Thank you so much. I have the 490 series but it was similar just less options and details but the function works from the same systems preferences place. Again life saver!

Coffee & Tech I'm so glad that you put up this video! I've always had the notion of going threw my printer software settings found in the Devices & Printers tab. This video cuts down the seek time of finding the correct folder so I can use the Scanner option at my own leisure. Thanks a million and I hope your subscriber base grows.
This was amazingly helpful, i have been struggling for months. I have subscribed as i thought this printer would be super easy to use but seems to be bit of a challange.

Thanks so much Kalem. You really helped me. I guess the secret is to choose the series 2 for scan on the MX492. Choose Mx 492. -No Series2 for printer. I think that’s the clue. Anyway I got my pages scanned using series 2. But nothing prints when I use mx492 Series2. How about that. Thanks so much.
What I didnt like was you did not show yourself putting the papers that you wanted yo scan into the printer. As someone that has never done this before, hence why I was looking up youtube videos that's something I needed to see.
Karen Hicks I didn’t even have the show details option. But by the grace God I’m up and running🙌🏾. I had to go to the cannon website and download the current driver for the scanner (you don’t need the printer one of your printer is connected). After all that i the scanner still didn’t show up here, so I went to image capture app, from there you should be able to follow his instructions.
Thanks for the video, was super helpful, but I'm still struggling. Do you have any idea why the printer won't recognize that the document is in the feeder? It just keeps telling me "no document loaded" and it's pretty infuriating.
Probably because it’s not pushed in far enough or the printer is broken. There should be a beep when you insert the paper. If it’s not working then try unplugging the printer from your computer restarting the computer and try again. Keep me posted

It only goes to 600, I had a scanner in 2005 that went to 2400. I used Photoshop with it. I have Canon MX490, I'm hoping to use Photoshop with it. In Photoshop click File/Import/TWAIN. But Nowadays your scanner will appear instead of TWAIN.
Hi, when I open printer and scanners on my MacBook the scanner option isn’t even visible. I am able to print on my mx 409 and used to be able to scan but not sure what’s happening? Can you help me?
If you’ve ever used another printer they’ll be a list of them when you open up the printer settings. Make sure you have the mx492 selected and then the scanner option should pop up. If not let me know.
@@CoffeeTech yeah, I know that list... however, I recently took my MacBook Pro to the geek squad for them to reset it like brand new so I can free up some storage that “other” was taking a lot of. Before wiping my MacBook I was able to scan with no problem. This is the only printer I have ever used & at this moment it only prints documents from my Mac. There is no “list” in the printer box just one printer listed and it’s the mx490. I even tried using a usb to have the printed side rly connected but no scanner option. I went to download the IJ scanner file from the cannon website and nothing.
Actually if you down loaded the correct software from Canon you got a Quick Menu on the bottom of your screen or hidden icons tab, choose Canon My Imagine garden and you can do anything you want from scanning to printing even a 78 year old figured out unless you have one of them off breed Mac's that is.
When I am in the "Printers and Scanners" place (1:24 in your video) my Canon MX490 shows up under printers but no scanners show up. Any idea why? It does on my old MacBook but I just got a new one and now I am trying to scan to it.
just realized there is a separate driver that needs to be installed for the scanner function. Once I did that I was able to follow the steps on the video. Thank you!
Tonya Kallfelz go to the canon website and download all the current drivers. Then go to your applications and choose the canon utility tool that should have downloaded with the drivers and should have been saved in your utilities area. Use the tool to scan and print. It should just have an option listed to do both. Let me know what happens.
If you simply choose the item you want to print and then click the send arrow it’ll give you the option to send it to a printer. As long as your printer is on your home network it’ll find it and just click copy.
trying to scan paper i put in scanner don't know what i did got it to scan the first paper have no idea what I did and can't figure out how to get it to scan the second paper. What am i doing wrong
Tdgffh Cgfdgh the feeder should take all the pages into itself. Unless your pages aren’t pushed in evenly and the printer can’t identify that there are more pages. As long as the feeder option is chosen just follow the steps. Let me know if it works.
My Physical printer says mx492 on it and when I open the printer and scanners menu on my Mac it says that the printer is a mx490 and there is no scanner option what do I do?
Zachary Rosado it’s just referring to the mx490 series of printers. If it’s not recognizing the scanner unplug, turn off the printer and shut down your computer and try again. Let me know what happens
Hi, thanks for the video, but when I go the process nd select my Canon Printer MX 490 series two option, the only option that I have is "open print queue" I cannot get into "scanner" option, can you help please? thanks
Hmmm there should be a label that says printer. If you click it there should be a drop down box with scanner listed. You should be able to click it. If not I’m not sure where it should be.
@@CoffeeTech I understand what you are saying, however it's not there. I bought this second hand, it is brand new, but I never got the CD that came with it, do you think that may be the issue?. Thank you in advance
