Using a #Scanner on #Canon #Printer without #Ink or Cartridge.

Step 1: REMOVE ALL CARTRIDGE.
We need to remove all cartridge. Remove ink and cartridge.
How to remove ink and cartridge? Turn printer ON, lift upper body to access cartridge, remove cartridge by pulling it to the front (to you).

Step 2: ENTER 0 MODE.
Now we need to enter 0 mode. I call this 0 mode because its simply show "0" on the display.
How to enter 0 mode on Canon MP198 model?
-Turn printer OFF.
-Disconnect USB cable.
-Close front lid.
-Insert A PAPER into paper tray.
-Press and HOLD "stop/reset" button.
-Press and HOLD "ON" button.
-Release "stop/reset" button.
-Press and release "stop/reset" button 2x.
-Release "ON" button.
-Wait a moment, it will enter into 0 mode.
-AFTER show "0", turn OFF printer.
-PAPER will slightly coming/moving in.
Go to next step after PAPER slightly coming/moving in.

Step 3: ENTER E3 MODE.
Then we enter E3 mode.
E3 mode will blink "E" and "3" continuously.
-TURN ON printer.
-PAPER will continue moving in.
-After half of paper inside, it will stop.
-Then it will display E3.
Continue next step after E3 mode.

Step 4: ENTER 1 MODE.
We will then enter 1 mode, (because it will show "1" on its display). 1 mode means printer are ready to use (as scanner) even without ink or cartridge.
-Open front lid.
-PAPER will continue come in,
until eventually out from front lid.
-Close front lid again.
-Finish, wait and it will go to 1 mode.

Step 5: START SCANNING.
Its done!, Connect USB cable from printer to your PC, and finally you can start using your Canon MP 198 as a scanner (again).

I used to use an Epson ET-2550 ru-vid.comUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 , an early model of the ink tank style. It worked well, but had one nuisance that drove me up the wall; if you didn't put it in high quality print mode you'd get a streak across the page. I'm happy to say I have yet to see this with this printer. The print quality has been fantastic so far, the set up was super easy. All in all I'm very happy with this printer.

It works on canon pixma mp150, the only deference is that I need to stop the paper by hand when it try to go out, to put it mode 3. After that I go out the paper from down side of the printer and push the green button in the middle of tree buttons to go in 1.

thanks for the video. i have a mp210 and this method didn't work completely because the paper didn't stop in the middle way. so i hold the paper when it is about in middle until the device stop pulling the paper. then i pull the paper from paper tray and pressed the copy button to rid of the e3 error. after that i was able to scan.

MP250 :: It worked! But only after I figured out that after you remove the ink cartridges you need to snap the locking bars back down into position. Before I did that I just got the flashing warning triangle light. The other slight difference with me was that the machine didn't try to feed the paper at all -- I put the paper in but after cycling the power the machine ignored the paper and just came straight back into 1 mode and was able to scan. Anyway, big thanks to the OP - my MP250 has been propping the door open for several years but now it has a more useful function!

I'm not able to buy ink for this printer anymore, I was thinking in keep it just because it has an scanner. Your tutorial works to me to but I can't see me doing this every single time I need to scan something. Time to throw away this printer. They made this dependency on purpose, your solution prove it. I will never buy again another Cannon product.

This also works for the Cannon MG3620. Paper has to be in place but in my case does not do anything with it. Scanner working. Also note that wifi Cannon printers will not connect wifi with an error.

Yes. This is just a temporary hack. It will back to normal when printer turned off.

Thanks this worked for me on a M272. Only difference is it seemed to go straight to 1 mode without E3 mode. Scanning worked fine though. The Canon Cripple Hammer is defeated again.

...... or so I thought. I tried to do a second page and it was back to the old start with, I believe, the number 8 (as I can only see half the digit). And going through the process again, I came up with different results, none of which would end in a scan. Actually, before coming to you, I tried another method from the internet; I was able to scan once and then no more. It's as if my machine rebels against any changing of the code. Artificial intelligence years ahead in technology????

This trick should work until you turn printer off/power off. Then you need to perform all over procedure again. If its not working, maybe you can try to disconnect power for few minutes, and try procedure again. Glad if it works for you sir!

Because it will back to normal state, which is E5 code (no cartridges).

If only there were such a trick for the "Ink Cartridge not Recognized" problem on this same printer which prevents printing even with brand new cartridges. I have yet to find a solution.

I think, "Ink cartridge not recognized" could happen for many reason, it could be the chip on the cartridge house was broken so it cannot detect cartridge properly. Or it could happen because the cartridge are not original somehow printer detecting it. Or could be dirty contact pin between cartridge and its house. Not to mention sofware/firmware problem. So, yeah, its quite complicated.

@@Sevenmojoe Thanks for your reply but... I investigated every possibility and tried everything I could, to no avail. One day the printer worked and a few hours later, without having touched anything, it did not. It's a shame that after buying brand new Canon cartridges, the problem was not resolved and I am now faced with ditching this printer and bying a new one. At least, I can scan using your procedure.

A great thing to find out..while it does work , mine is mp 190.. but unfortunately, this hack gets reset if power goes off..so every time the printer is turned back on, it has to be repeated.., or the other solution is to always keep it powered on..which is not good anyway for occasional scans..only useful for those who do regular and lot of scans continuously.. But great hack nonetheless ...

MP190, could not go from e3 to e1, it did not take the paper until the middle, just ran it completely through... I tried a second time with manually jamming the paper but then the message wouldn't clear out. and wouldn't take the paper out if I waited for it and closed and openned the front lid., had to turn off and on, it moved the paper and went into e5 again.

I can confirm that it works for mp190 and mp198, others too. I believe that something or some step/procedure must be missed or incorrectly performed. Have you completely remove all cartridges?

@@Sevenmojoe yes, i removed them both, i tried several times but when the paper is supposed to stay halfway and give error 3 it gets scrolled all the way and exits to give e5

I cant help any further because i dont have canon MP280 to test. But maybe MP-280 use different method. E5 is condition where no cartridge attached, or empty ink.

I can confirm this trick works for MP198 and few other models according to some replies here. But i dont have MP-160 to try so i am sorry i cannot help you any further. Maybe others that have similiar model can help.

This trick will gone when printer powered off. So you can scan as many before it powered off. After powered off, yes it need to this procedure again.
