James, yes, they almost give the printers away to get you to buy refill ink. Also, many now don't include ink with the purchase of a printer, or the tanks are "starter" cartridges with little ink in them. Gotcha! ... Bastards.

Also, it makes me wonder, how does the cartridge memory, which according to this video, supposedly keeps track of, and shows the ink level on the desktop, cause the printer to print like it's out of ink? And then resetting it causes the ink to flow again? Like, does it say, oh, I'm DETECTING low ink, so I' going to make it LOOK like low ink! This doesn't make sense to me... but I'm still going to try it next time!

Reset button must have been useful in quality assurance testing (to be sure the screwing was calibrated correctly), maybe replaced by a secret multi-button press sequence. Like "Resetting ink level in canon pixma series printer" page.
bollocks, there has never been such a button. it would be needless extra cost, and utterly stupid to include a convenient way to reset the chip. plus without power, a button doesnt do squat all.
i used to work at a printer test lab to test printer ink cartridges. it is true that the chip on the cartridge provide "estimated" amount of ink info to the computer. you can reset that memory, but not by pressing a small button on the cartridge, the cartridge itself do not have embed power source or battery to do so. you need an actual software to read the chip and overwrite the chip information and it can only be done this way because that's what i did to test those cartridges.

weeowey I use to own a lot of them because printers on special are around 40 bucks which includes both cartridges whereas a single colour ink itself cost 40 dollars alone
I was almost out of gas in my Blazer. I pulled off the road, crawled under the SUV and removed the gas tank. I couldn't believe it. There is this little button that you can reset with a paper clip. Sadly, I didn't have a paper click, so I reinstalled the tank and drove to Walmart to get a paper clip. While I was there I picked up an ink cartridge.
Lots of aftermarket cartridges exist. Depending on the model and even the revision of that model printer you have, your options vary wildly. The Epson cartridges shown in this video can be reset using a resetting device but Epson has caught on and released newer cartridges that have reset proof chips on them. New ressetters are released that often reset those as well. If not, there are some aftermarket chips available that are resettable and the originals are easy to pop off and replace.
Each printer has different tricks for getting the most out of a cartridge or using refill ink: Epson: electronic resetter for full reading. Note- You don't want to let an Epson run totally out of ink, it can damage the head and it's not easily replaceable. Canon: no reset, just hold cancel for 30 seconds, ink level will become "unknown." Printing can resume. HP: only keeps track of last two cartridges (both color and black for some models), thus, rotate three (sets).
I used to work for a company that produced inkjet refill kits. Your Epson cartridges are easy to reset, but other brands aren't so friendly about it. This definitely isn't something that works on "most ink cartridges" -- the trick as described is pretty exclusive to Epson cartridges and even those have changed over time.
Just for those who don't know: Some software that comes with printers takes the info from the ink circuit boards and when the ink boards say it's empty it sometimes mistaken but you can't keep printing because some software will make you replace it and cancel all print jobs before you do

Word! Im a Mediadesigner a work with an Epson Stylos Pro 7880. For Printfactorys Epson delivers a refill Ink and a Cartridge Resetting Tool. Its only a small flat battery cell with a LED on the topside. You must press the pins from the resetting tool on the connectors for the ink cartridge, if the LED blinks the Cartridge is correct reseted. Beware to start the Printhead cleaning program. Epson Printer uses the Ink to do this. Some Epson Printers gots a WasteInktank for this, can also be reseted

Actually, this CAN be done with the inks for the Epson 9900 Pro printers. I do it everytime they get low the first time at my college since I am responsible for the printers there. Those cartridges contain a small button cell battery for memory backup when the printer loses power. Assuming you know how to access the battery and make a simple connection between a resistor and the circuit board, it works with these inks.
My printer has 4 cartridges, if any one is empty, it won't print at all. If red is empty and you wanted to print black text, it won't happen. When you look at the "empty" cartridge you can still see liquid ink in it. I liked my old printer better, when you were running out of ink it would just print dimmer and dimmer until it ran completely out. I will have to check this trick out. Thanks!
Acuravigor47 you don't get it... the demo cartridges are not fully full... you cant reset a full cartridge... But it would be economical to buy a printer, then return it every 90 days for free ink :D
This video was 11 years ago. At that time, CIS was already a thing and actually rather popular. And if you are not trying to maximize printing quality but go for budget anyway, maybe that's the way to go. But nowadays printers with built in CIS ("ink tank") is already pretty cheap so aftermarket CIS seems to be more for super high volume prints only
I have used this method for 2 years now. I print mass quantities everyday and i just reset it everytime it gets low. It is a free energy hack. It never runs out. It has unlimited ink. I think i know how it works. There is a small blackhole inside the cartridge and by pressing the reset button you activate this blackhole and unlimited supplies of ink come out.
Are you saying that corporations are trying to steal our money? Yep. You can go on Ebay and buy ink all day long for almost nothing. NEVER buy a printer with all the colors in one small cartridge! Buy one with 5 tanks. Buy refill kits, and ink online and tell the printer corporations to go suck it. They sell the printers at almost cost to get you buying their very expensive ink refills. Don't be a sucker.

I prefer to use a 'chip resetter' along with a remote bulk ink tank setup. My ink costs have since come down by over 80%! Although most bulk setups will automatically reset the chips every time you switch the printer off & on again, some will not, so having a resetter to hand is the best way to go. That's why I prefer Epson printers as bulk tanks are easier to find and usually cheaper to buy. Following a bit of luck my heat sublimation transfer dye costs are well over 90% cheaper.
randy Perkins: when the computer says no ink, it actually will NOT let you print. It is a new think ink companies are doing to force people to buy new cartridges. They are set to NOT allow anymore printing. The reset button allows you to trick the computer to allow you to print with the same old cartridge.
It's a fake video. Treat yourself to a nice new set of refillable cartridges from one of the many ebay suppliers. The ones with ARC chips reset themselves to a full cartridge just by removing them from the printer, or you can get ones with an actual reset button on them.
Its somewhat true. Yes you can reset it all cartridges BUT not with a paper clip, you can buy a device off ebay that resets the cartridges specific to your printer for like 15-20$
It depends on your printer. Many cheap printers don't have cartridges that actually measure ink levels, instead they measure how many docs and/or what document types you print and approximate. This is why a printer can warn you it's running out yet print fine if warning is ignored. Or you can run out but not get a warning. But once cartridge is actually dry - no amount of resets will help :-( New printers come with "introductory" cartridges, only good for 20-30 HQ color prints

That depends on your printer and it's software. Some printers will do exactly that, and continue to print regardless of what the machine is telling you. Other printers and or the software will simply state, 'Out of Ink' or something along though lines, sometimes in the form of an error, and will not print at all regardless is there's still ink in the cart or not. If that happens to be the case, this trick could really save some people money.
I can understand how the reset button would cause the levels to appear wrong on the monitor, but no memory chip would cause the ink cartridges to actually have unfinished ink marks on paper..
Video is bullshit for 2 reasons. 1 - A cartridge producing printings that appear to be running out of ink cannot be simulated by the ink cartridge, it actually is running out of ink. 2 - The level of the ink cannot be reset as there is no power to reset any memory on the actual cartridge... If your last printing produces perfect printing, but your printer says its out of ink, it has more ink in it, however, there is nothing you can do about it, not without special hardware and software to reenter the values stored in its memory. You cannot do this with a paperclip, sorry.
Fun thing is, loads of 'life hacks' images posted all over reddit, facebook, tumblr, and sites like that, do include this one in their list. I was sceptical, so I decided to check out the source. Funny how gullible people are, and how little they test stuff before passing it on.
I ordered HP 902 ink cartridges for a HP OfficeJet Pro 6978. I installed the cartridges in the printer and got a “Incompatible cartridge” message on my printer. The Cyan ink cartridge is the issue. I re-installed the EMPTY Cyan cartridge and the printer accepted the cartridge with no error messages. After trying 4 (four) more brand new HP Cyan cartridges purchased, the same “Incompatible cartridge “message displayed. Further research revealed that the Cyan cartridge is made in Malaysia and the other cartridges are made in China including the empty Cyan cartridge that was taken out of the printer. The only ink cartridges that are compatible are the ones made in China. Is there a work-around for this issue?
And I totally want to try this. I hate those little memory cards. It's so silly!! Why won't ink companies just let us decide when we are out ink?! Oh yes to be a complete rip off
I refill mine and have a reseter for the chip which reads full again after refilling the cartridge. The bottles of ink come in 500 ml bottles and will last me as long as i probably will be able to print.
See if this will work 1- Remove all ink cartridges from the printer 2- Turn the printer off by pressing the Power button. Let the printer stay off for 20 seconds. 3- Turn the printer back on. Allow the printer to go through the usual start-up process and recognize there are no cartridges installed. 4- Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until the printer has been turned on and off five times. This process resets and removes the last five ink cartridge IDs used from the printer's
Pro-Tip....... When your pages come out of your printer looking like your cartridge is running out of ink, it's because your cartridge is RUNNING OUT OF INK. Either re-fill it with ink, or buy a new or re-filled cartridge with ink in it.
This may not work with all printers but this confirms that printer companies have been scamming us all along. HP even has expiration dates on their cartridges?
Here, a printer only costs $15 USD but ink costs $37 USD. When I run out of ink, I just buy a new printer for more than half the cost of ink lol. But thanks though...
+Domingo Siguenza Completely correct. I refill cartridges for a living. The older 78 series in the video had that little bump - it's not a button. It's a little bump of plastic on the cartridge, and a little hole on the chip carrier. The bump fits in the hole and is used to align the chip carrier to the cartridge. The newer 78 series cartridge did away with that and just has it plastic-riveted to the cartridge. +Richard Smith is right on the money. Besides the fact that even if resetting the chip that way WAS possible, it still woulnd't make the printer print any better as he didn't refill the cartridge. Which is a pain in the butt with that type of cartridge. I can refill them - but I don't have a chip resetter for the 78 series so there's no point.
Actually you can reset the cartridge..but usually not on the cartridge but through PC and the printer.. and It just reset.. it wont "give back" your ink and drastically improve the printing quality like it shown in this video. We actually did this AFTER we have done REFILLING the cartridge with ink. resetting is required so that we can force our printer to further print using the dried cartridges. Without resetting, the printer will still think the cartridge is dried and refuse to print with it..
If you want to save money, Don't buy an Epson Printer. I have an HP 5515 Printer that uses HP364 Cartridges. These can be refilled with "justrefill" ink and the printer will let you carry on printing when the cartridges are showing "empty". You will just have to keep an eye on your prints to find out when your ink is running out because after the first refill, the cartridges will always show empty.
just get an office quality (it has a network card) laser printer. it's more expensive up front but the consumables are cheap, as in i can buy a whole CMYK set of non-hp brand toner (for my hp) for about 90 bux.
My Lexmark Z11 printer that I bought in year 2000 doesn't have one of these but I can tell it through the software that it's a new cartridge after I refill it with a syringe. I have it working under Windows 7 with a parallel port card in a PCI slot on the motherboard. The original driver wasn't meant for 64 bit processing but Lexmark's generic driver for Windows Vista 64 bit does the trick.

I used to refill ink at the lab I worked at. We either used a chip resetter or replaced the chip with an aftermarket one. Works most of the time, but over time, Espon started blocking and changing the encryption on the chips so we couldn't reset the chips, and the chips we had no longer worked
To build a volume sensor like that in a car's fuel tank will make the cartridges prohibitively expensive. So the only way that printer companies can track how much ink is left in a cartridge is by guessing how much is left through counting the number of pages it has printed - sometimes it is very accurate and leaves a little, sometimes it isn't and it leaves a lot. But they are conservative. They have to be because if the system runs dry, it will damage the heads and piping.
I solved my problem. The print heads kept drying out. I tried many methods to restore them. Finally I came upon the idea of SWITCHING OVER to laser printers. They have come down in price. Because they use a DRY print method to begin with, the print heads NEVER DRY OUT. I threw away 2 or 3 old INKJET printers, and haven't had any problem since then. Just be sure to get a printer that has replacement TONER cartridges that are cheap to buy on amazon. Mine cost about $8. dollars and allow me to print 1500 pages. I just print black. Might upgrade to COLOR some day. If I have to print COLOR, i just go to office depot.
tip ! .. if you DONT have a reset button on your cartridge, all you need to do is squeeze the sides of the cartridge while tapping it seven times on the top with a slipper or similar soft shoe..do NOT us a boot or heavy shoe as this might hurt your foot.
There is no button. You CAN print till a cartridge is totally dry by tricking the computer into resetting the pages using software, BUT that is dangerous because if you bleed the entire system dry of ink, you risk damage to the print head, and expose the system to clogs by dry ink. Especially Epson printers that use fixed heads and pigment inks. But anyway, Epson cartridges are already cheaper than HP or Canon as their print heads built in so that the cartridges can be cheaper.
Er, best way to know, as most of us ignore the ink warning, is ... when the cartridge no longer actually prints ... you'd have to be a bit thick to simply go by the ink warning
I'm think you may be wrong. The documentation that came with my printer, (HP7520) says there is a circuit board and memory chip in each cartridge that is collecting info about me. They give directions on how to turn it off. Whether or not ink level readings can be reset I don't know.
The memory tells how much ink it to be released. If it werent there, then the first time you would use the color it would spew out all the ink it had. The memory is a control, and is independent from the actual ink levels. The reset button just simply resets the memory, starting the actual ink count fresh.
