✰ Welcome back to another quick How-To video!
✰ Today we're looking at different tools for cutting leather. There are lots of different types of leather and that can mean you cary the tools for cutting that particular leather.
Tools that I recommend:
Scoring
✰ I like to use an scratch awl to score onto the surface of the leather
✰ Alternative is to use a biro.
Cutting
✰ Craft knife or Stanley knife - on veg tanned leather
✰ 45mm rotary cutter - on chrome tanned leather
✰ You can also use a clicker knife ( not listed in video)
✰ Large Scissors
✰ Strap Cutter ( Brand that I love is CraftTools)
The first demo we are cutting Veg tanned leather and then cutting with a strap cutter - 3mm thick
Process:
* Leather varies on the edge due to the nature of it being an animal hide.
* Start with a cut line with a knife as you need a straight edge to cut from. Keep the blade as straight as possible as the knife will leave the angle of the blade in the leather
* Strap cutters are fantastic tools for cutting narrow stripes of leather.
* Adjust to the width that you want.
* Place the strap cutter up against the straight edge of the leather.
The next stage shows you how to use a rotary cutter - chrome tanned leather 1mm thick
Process:
* Use an awl to score around the handbag template
* Weight the pattern down with your hand or a weight
* Hold the template as you score around
* Make sure it does not stretch or distort the leather
* Check the score line
* Use a rotary cutter on the straight lines scissors on the curves.
* Use a metal ruler on the body of the bag and cut with a rotary cutter on the straights.
* Once you have cut all the straights go over the curves with a scissor.
