I can say - separation studio works! In comparison with different adobe separation actions (scripts) - it really works! In your case - printing on black shirts without K (black minus method) separation - looks amazing! Gray color for midtones and finishing white for highlights do it better than black-color-add for total contrast of a printed image. Thumbs up! I need to buy that soft.

Awesome vid Matt. A great idea for content would be to show us from concept to completion. Creating this design, then bringing it in to step studio, printing films, burning screens and finally how you registered it. I think using this design/production would be an amazing template to showcase how to do some advanced artwork seps and on-press setup for simulated process. Really hope to see more of that type of content here - it's rare.

I do these multi color type shirts with a single screen. Start with a white or off white base like this dude then blow dry the shirt a bit and wipe the screen clean. next I ad small amounts of color where it is wanted/needed on the screen and squeegee it in, not using too much. Wipe color off screen after each color change. I paint the color on the screen before squeegee it in with small brush. In the end I can have as many colors as I want. This works great for me as a home based screen printer. Would not work well for production though. So all you amateur home screen printers who think you need all these layers and that multi shirt carousel, you don't, unless you really want to make tons of shirts. ~

Great video, I’ve been binge watching a lot of your content and you make it all so easy to understand. Very helpful with all of your videos. This may be a stupid question, but when printing cmyk does the image determine your print settings and the mesh your going to use?
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 4 года назад
Thank you! Not really. Each image may need a little adjustment though. For CMYK, stick with 305 mesh all around, use the highest dpi possible with your setup. Adjust your screens and dial them in and what I mean by that is sometimes there's certain colors that may have other colors in them you don't need. Every once in a while our royal blues will turn out a little too purple, so we have to pull the magenta back. Or yellow, sometimes will have some blue in it making it look green, so we have to pull the cyan back in those colors. If that makes sense.

I run it at full temp and I flash for about 8 seconds once all of the pallets are warmed up. You want it flashed so it's not wet, but you don't want to over flash it so the top layers don't eventually wash out. You'll have to experiment.

@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 6 лет назад
The idea is not to clean the screens and let the ink build up before you start running client shirts. So, in reality, I do about 5-6 test prints so the ink is nice and built up to keep each shirt consistent and then start the job.

@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 7 лет назад
Thank you. The mesh is 230. It's the thread count of the mesh material. 55 lpi are the amount of dots there are per inch when the halftones are printed onto the film which you'll expose onto the screen. I hope this makes sense. I just use standard plastisol ink. Any ink will work really. I prefer to use Wilfex and Union inks.

If you're using a manual, or even an automatic, if one of the color inks tends to run, flash it. Use opaque inks and they'll be fine.

what's the advantage to using spot color over cmyk?
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 7 лет назад
I would recommend doing CMYK process on white shirts only. You can get away with printing a white under base and then CMYK process on color shirts, but you would have to flash each CMYK color, which you can't do on an auto. Manually, it works fine.

It's plastisol ink. The last screen is white, but a different screen. It's what's called a high light white. you're basically printing on the last screen the bright white areas. Give Separation Studio's free trail a shot and you'll see. Total of 6 screens. White base, purple, yellow, green, grey, and white high light.

If you change color that fast, wouldnt the wet paint in the shirt stick into the screen and ruin the next shirt?
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 7 лет назад
That is what you would call wet on wet printing. Print the under base, and then print the other colors on top of one another. This will help the colors blend. On autos, generally, you print the white base, and then print the rest of the colors. Very common in screen printing. Depending on the size of the press and how many colors are going down, you would flash down the line before doing another print color to keep the colors from bleeding. In spot process print, you actually want the colors to stack on top of one another wet on wet. I hope this makes sense.

You at least need screens, emulsion, ink, squeegees, an exposure unit (you could even use a flood light and a piece of glass), a way to washout the exposed image, and a flash unit. I would recommend a conveyor drier, but you can use a flash to cure your shirts.

@mikeydesignssilkscreen473

All plastisol. Overprinting colors is common and you yield a high production rate printing wet on wet. 95% of all of our jobs the colors after the white base is printed wet on wet. On time we flash is if the colors blend together when we don't want them to after printing multiple colors, or if the ink starts to get a stamping effect. Hope this helps.

@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 7 лет назад
When I do CMYK process, all angles are at 20º. It's not like offset printing where you make rosettes. They just stack on top of one another. If you did proper offset printing CMYK angles, it would look weird on a t-shirt because of the knit of the shirt.

Hi Mikey. Thanks for the videos! I have a question that I've been trying to find an answer to from google searches and asking questions but I have not found an answer yet. Are there water-based spot process inks? Or is this only a plastisol method? I can only use water-based ink as my print shop is literally my living room and I can't find what inks I could use for this process. I know they have water-based CMYK inks which I plan on purchasing so I can practice process printing, but I was hoping there was an option for spot process using water-based inks as well. Thanks again!
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 5 лет назад
That's a good question. We mainly use plastisol, but have yet to do spot process with water based. I wouldn't see why it would be an issue. I'll have to give this a try and the future and report back, but to my knowledge you can do water based spot process.

@@marcd3801 In spot process you're print a opaque inks on colors shirts. The inks mix a little to get a realistic look. Process printing is CMYK inks which are translucent, but you can create any color with it. It too is meant for photorealism.

Flash the white base and printing the top colors is pretty common. Get it a try one day.
