This is another awesome screenprinting tutorial video in which we take a look at what it means to control the ink on press. Here we discuss proper usage of the squeegee while highlighting some best practices for controlling ink while you are printing. Do you find your ink is coming up on the squeegee handle? Does it get all over the frame edges? Are you constantly using your spot cleaning gun to remove spots and fingerprints from finished product? Then you may want to take the time to review this quick tips video in which we take a look at these issues and point them out so you may be aware of what you are doing while printing. Have you ever used so much pressure on the squeegee that it bends into a curve? We talk about that too and we show you what it looks like. So take a few minutes to watch this screen printing video and learn more about how to work clean on press and in shop.

Say it again for the cheap seats in the back! ‘You don’t want ink on the squeegee handle!’ Best advice ever! 🙌 I have ruined good screen-printed tshirts because of ink on the handle. So sad.

What brand of platisol inks do you use? or do you use different brands for different types.. and where do you buy them? being in europe (Ireland) the prices here compared to U.S are quite high :S
@CatspitProductions

Hallucination01 I use many different inks. But I have a few favorites I use for specific things. Unfortunately none of which would be readily available to you. At least I doubt it as they are all American brands. I don’t know who exports what to where. Maybe someday Catspit will be able to help ;) Thanks for watching!

Great video! How do you minimize the consumption of ink in a production?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 2 года назад
Thank you, glad you enjoyed. Use an aluminum screen with very tight mesh. Use the proper squeegee and don't over print if you're working manually. The print is best achieved with the minimal amount of movement. Also the proper mesh count can help in restricting ink flow. Thanks for watching! Ive now figured out how to make the screen its actually quite easy now. But when I go to print Its either smudgy and the thin lettering is one blob or the stencil gets clogged and nothing comes out. Than getting the ink off is a whole other issue I cant scrape it off and then when I got to wash it out nothing comes off so than the screen Is pretty much done. Than on top of it, I got crap all over my hands that doesn’t come off... screen printing has been kinda a nightmare nothing works
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 5 лет назад
You may be working with hobby products. Speedball inks are really hobby grade and are often difficult to work with. It sounds like your ink may be thin and/or your screen mesh count is too low. Water based inks dry while you work so you need to back flood the ink over the stencil between prints and work fast. Plastisol inks are easier to learn with because they never dry until you cure them with heat. But you need something to cure the ink with besides an iron. Thanks for watching! Hi Jonathan I started screen printing T-shirts and have watched your videos and they have helped me tremendously! Thanks for your insight. I have not controlled the ink on my squeegee and it got on the handle and my hands. Eventually it made its way on to the T-shirt. Is there a way to salvage the shirt or should I just use it as a practice T? I just saw your video that talks about controlling your ink and I will now follow your advise and be more aware of that. Thanks again!!!

What happens if I push too hard ? Should I have a light hand when screen printing?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 4 года назад
Too hard will flood the ink out and make a blurry messy print. You need just enough pressure to sheer the ink and clear it out of the mesh. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

Thank you. I've been using a house brand white from GSG, and it's very thick. Hurts my wrists and clumps to the squeegee. I pretty much have to smash it through the screen. Reducing it down helps a little, but my prints still come out very rough, although defined.

Matthew Chevalier You're evry welcome. Sometimes the ink can make or break you ;)
@FragileBranch
@FragileBranch 10 лет назад
Matthew Chevalier I can vouch for the Catspit-approved white plastisol - I've printed several detailed prints through a 230 mesh with no problem. Usually doing a double-hit is enough to get good coverage with it, but a print-flash-print will always get you good solid coverage. It's almost as creamy and easy to work with as the Matsui 301 waterbase I used to print with (except it doesn't get tacky after 1 minute like the Matsui)
@cmattdabrat
@cmattdabrat 10 лет назад
Thanks for the feedback. I've been using a GSG house brand, which I think is made by Wilco? It kinda sucks. LOL. It's a low bleed white and isn't very creamy. It's REALLY thick. I'll give the CSA white ink a try next time.

Thanks for posting the videos, very informative. I just saw your video on the white ink you sell and it looks very nice and creamy. I was using another brand and basically had to reduce a lot to make it creamy. Don't want to mention brand but you know who they are. I live next to border and just bought a Mexican brand, Sanchez white. It's as creamy as the one on your video. Barely gonna try it, hopefully it works good, if not I'll order yours. What about the ergo metal squeegee's? What do you think about them?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 10 лет назад
You're very welcome, thanks for watching! I don't like to reduce white or high opacity inks. It affects the coverage and opacity. Thanks, you'll probably like the white ink I sell. It's great especially for the money ;) The Ergo force is okay. You need a very flat pallet to use them though. They don't allow the squeegee blade to flex. I have a few I got as samples. Great for halftones on metal pallets though. Thanks for your support!

Hello! I just bought a wooden squeegee and the rubber is very thick, I think it's a durometer of 60. I also have a plastic squeegee which is very thin. Can I use both when I'm working on a two color t shirt? Or the thin squeegee will not have consistency?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 10 лет назад
Yeah I would think that would suck... LOL. The genuine squeegee will print nicely and the other may not. But if there is not see able difference in the resulting print then why not. I would do a test and see. But ideally we would use all the same type of squeegee on the same job of course you may use different durometers if need be but the squeegee itself should be the same type. Hi, I'm using SUPER PAINT (white) mixed with BINDER, then I have a foam attached to a wood underneath the tshirts as a mount. Just a question, what could be the cause of "doubling prints/leaking ink" like my print have shadows of white ink? Checked my paint and I've mixed it well. Could it be the foam or my pressure of using squeegee
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 5 лет назад
It's very difficult to say working completely blind from afar. Could be your flood and stroke method or maybe your off contact is too high. Perhaps the mesh is not tight enough. I would not use foam on the pallet. Just use a smooth flat surface. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

Thank you, I have another question what do you recommend for under base..do you recommend it to have it on every shirt & sweater that one will print? I will be printing on sweaters soon, should the under base be just Plain white ink or is their specific kind for a under base.
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 10 лет назад
You're very welcome. No I don't. I use an underbase depending on inks, artwork and desried print result. You can use white or light gray inks as an under base. There are inks made specifically for the underbase but any decent quality high opacity ink will work. Sometimes you can print without an under base using high opacity inks. I have videos on this. Take a look at my uploads and playlists.

+Alison Black You're very welcome. My pleasure to help out where I can. I'm sorry but I only offer custom squeegee sizes in the Phoenix area storefront. Online I only offer the 6 foot wood handles and squeegee rolls. If you can't put them together and cut them then that would not be a good solution. But if you found someone who will custom cut and ship 2 squeegees then I would order from them. I use and sell squeegees for screen printing so I would not know about any other usages. We use them with plastisol, solvent, UV and water based inks. The material is urethane plastic type.
