Hello Screen Troopers! Here’s another “best of” tutorial video about the how much off contact is too much. In screen printing textiles we use what’s known as off contact. It’s something critical to know and this video simply adds to the collection of videos I have on this topic. It’s a simple way to get the point across on an important question I field all too often. Luckily, I am able to solve many people’s problems by asking this question; how high is your off contact? Again, many of you may think this is a trivial topic but It’s all too often I find this to be the culprit of screenprinting gremlins everywhere. Now I’m off to help others in the Catspit Screen Printing Militia. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!

Johnathan, I have been retired for a couple of years, and earlier this spring, I had the bright idea to take up screen printing. My background is that I am a journeymen carpenter, who when times were tough in construction, I went to work in a traditional print shop, eventually rising to the position of lead stripper at a time we were still using direct to film, and then plating. As construction picked up, I went back to Construction, and retired as an overnight project supervisor for Ledcor construction. I have built my own 4 station wooden press that uses a lazy Susan bearing swivel, and the unit works pretty good, but I continually tweek it. I Just want to thank you for all the advice that you have shared over the last few years that have helped me to get up and producing. By the way, love the belt. Blessings Greg

Great vid as always. You should do a video where you show how a prints looks like with too much off contact and with no off contact at all. I think it will make it more clear for new screenprinters. Visuals always work better 😉

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm try to share the information in the clearest manner while keeping it simple for me to do. This video was meant to help you trouble shoot things like this. Sometimes I will demonstrate things but in this case we would have to exaggerate that to be decent on video and it's something you should simply implement in your printing and you'll see right away how it works. And it's something you'll know you're doing wrong as soon as you watch the video ;) Hands on is the best of all learning methods. Thanks for watching! 1/16” is great...if your screens are properly tensioned. Most people starting out printing, don’t buy new screens. You need higher off contact with low tension screens. But if you’re just starting...buy new screens and follow these instructions :) I only mention this because it’s how I started and wasn’t getting good prints cause I had garbage screens. Screens are your most important piece of equipment...don’t skimp there. It is called SCREEN printing 😉😏

LOL... well yes, your screen should have tight mesh ;) A screen with loose, saggy mesh is a problem in more ways than off contact. You hit it dead on. Screens are an extension of the press. If your screen sucks, so does your press, sort to speak. I agree and cannot stress it enough. A tight mesh screen is necessary for an easier time printing. Thanks for sharing that. What do you think about using popsicle sticks at top and bottom of design as a hack? I do this sometimes. On big designs ill put 2 side by side.

Well on some presses that may be necessary but if your press is in decent shape it should be able to hold the off contact on a 20x24. So perhaps a 23x31 or bigger might need some help like that due to flexing of metal. If it does not flex, it will break...lol ;) Thanks for watching! I have a manual press with wooden platens, I've found on some garments my ink once I've laid it on my garment with cause my screen to stick to my shirt and sometimes pull Ink off the garment, or even pull my garment off of my platens. I use fuzz and glue method if that makes any difference, is it just too little off contact, or is my ink too thick?
@CatspitProductions

I think I have a video about that. Check out the video about prints sticking to the screen. There's a couple of reasons that can happen. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

It's very difficult to diagnose problems from afar because I cannot see everything you are doing. Even with pictures I would be guessing mostly. You can load a video to RU-vid and share that with me. I'll take a look but I can't promise that I'll be able solve your problem. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
