This educational video is about what I know on vector vs bitmap or raster art. I’m sure there are more technical explanations of how these different types of screen printing artwork render themselves but this should give you a basic idea of the fundamental difference. Many people use Photoshop to create screen printing graphics and that’s great. In fact you will need to learn how to use Photoshop for your print work art. But the first place you should start is with vector art and vector software and there are a couple of reasons for that. This video touches on these things and gives you my recommendations for screenprinting artwork creation. Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw create vector files whereas Photoshop makes image files. Learn about JPEG, PNG, and TIFF file formats and what size would be suitable for Illustrator to convert to vector. This is a great general tutorial which will help you better understand screenprinting artwork and graphics. Enjoy!

Here are some tips to get top quality results when creating raster art for screen printing (I always create in vector, but if I had to create in raster I could get just as good final print results): 1. When you initially create the blank document, be sure to create it in CMYK, at the maximum final print size you intend to use (such as 12" wide for a chest print), and at a high-enough PPI. Some people think 300 PPI is good enough; I wouldn't use less than 600 PPI, and personally I would use 1,200 PPI for good measure (and for flexibility; read more about that in #3), because that's enough to max out the capabilities of most any printer used for making film positives. Of course, this will result in a huge file size, but nothing can be done about that. It is simply one of the inherent disadvantages of raster compared to vector. 2. Always save the file as a .TIFF with lossless LZW compression. There are other lossless raster formats, such as .PNG, but .PNG only saves in the RGB colorspace, because it was designed for web graphics. .TIFF was designed with the print industry in mind, and as such, it can save in the CMYK colorspace. 3. If you decide you want to print at a different size than you created the artwork at, it can be done without loss when going smaller, or without noticeable loss if going larger (to a certain point), especially if you created it at 1,200 PPI or higher. However, there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. If you want to print at a different size, you do NOT resample the image (which, unfortunately, is the most common way of doing it, because that's how you would do it for web graphics, which is what most people are familiar with), but rather, you ONLY change the PPI. For example, if you have a 12" x 12", 1,200 PPI image, and you want to make a 6" x 6" print from it, simply change the PPI to 2,400. To do this in Photoshop, go to Image > Image Size, and deselect "Resample Image". Then type in the new document size or the new PPI (it doesn't matter which you do because they are inextricably tied to each other, i.e., typing in a new size of 6" x 6" automatically changes the PPI to 2,400, and vice versa). You won't see any change in the image on your computer screen when doing this, because it doesn't alter the image in any way (unlike resampling). PPI only informs the printer at what pixel density (and thus, physical dimensions) to print at. If you want to go larger, and you had the foresight to create the document in 1,200 PPI, you could go up to 24" x 24" (600 PPI), or by some people's standards, 48" x 48" (300 PPI) and still retain good print quality.

+MaximRecoil Thanks for your input but I still recommend vector art for screen printing. Much easier. Glad I can help out through my videos. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

CatspitProductions "but I still recommend vector art for screen printing" I do too, which is why I only create art for screen printing in vector programs (Illustrator, though I have used CorelDraw in the past). Vector files are far easier to manipulate; their file size is far smaller; they are infinitely resizable without loss, and they can max out the quality of any printing device which currently exists or will ever exist. The only downside to vector files is worrying about compatibility with other people's vector programs if you need to send the file to someone else. Raster images don't have that problem, but that advantage isn't nearly enough to tip the scales in favor of raster files, especially since any vector file can be exported to a raster file of any size and PPI if necessary.
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 8 лет назад
+MaximRecoil Actually it is very easy to send a vector file. I do it all the time. Save it as an generic EPS or vector enabled PDF with text saved as curves or outlines. Not a problem at all. Never had an issue.

I agree with you. I started to teach myself Photoshop first (since version 7). I tried learning Illustrator when i was younger, but I didn't understand it. My focus and ease of use was in PS. Now I have made Illustrator my daily driver for almost all my artwork this past year and a half, except when I'm looking for that "Someone made that in Photoshop" effect/reaction. You know what I'm saying?
@CatspitProductions

+cerberusgear Yeah totally. There are some effects PS can add to the vector art so it's good to learn AI and then PS as well. Artwork is a whole other animal to learn in screen printing. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

I've been using PS for color separating. Thank you for pointing out using vector software will make it easier to increase or decrease the size of image without losing resolution. I'm trying to stay away from adobe illustrator because of the yearly subscription. Will the basic corel draw software let me create vectors from jpeg? Always learning something new everytime I click your videos. Thank you for your time

You're welcome. Yes, you can use older versions of AI and Corel. I use Adobe CS3 and 5 on two different computers. I have CS5 still on disc. Hopefully they won't do like Microsoft did and rip everyone off by all of a sudden not allowing them to install older versions of Outlook purchased on disc with a key code. When I bought it, there was no limitations to the number of installs and suddenly it said I reached my total install allowance and made the disc useless. Then they tried to sell me a subscription. I opted to buy the 1 time fee for 1 computer. I'm glad my videos are helping out. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

I had a question about how to create cmyk from GIMP to screen printing. I have tons of photos that I want to print... not blick shapes. Halftone? Newsprint? Mesh size? Tutorials?
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 7 лет назад
I do not know much about Gimp. But you can do halftones with RIP software or bitmap halftones with Photoshop. I have at least 3 or 4 videos about halftones. Please check my video uploads on my channel page. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

Maybe I misunderstood, but did you say that bitmaps can not be enlarged with out loosing resolution? When my customers send me art that is low resolution, like a google image or something designed in a basic graphic program, for spot (solid) color images, I import into Corel x7 and convert to bitmap. This usually cheats the image parameters and locks in the image pixels so I can enlarge the image without further distortion of the image. I have been working with mostly bitmap art from PDF and JPEG files for many years, and to be honest, have never really had the need or have rarely been supplied with vector artwork from a customer. I understand the need if your doing process or digital printing, but for my basic spot color shop, I have never had the need for fancy vector artwork. Very informative video, thanks and pull it with passion!

+Brandon Jenkis Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. It's my pleasure to share screen printing information. That's very interesting. But you may be doing a lot of work arounds that you are unaware of. Vector is the simplest way to deal with graphic art because it's so dynamic. But as I always say, if it works for you then run with it ;) Normally with a 30K bitmap image there's nothing you can do to create detail where it does not exist. So you must be working with halfway decent files or the extrapolation Corel does is very good. But yes, you cannot enlarge a bitmap image without major loss of resolution unless you are extrapolating what is missing some how. If the information is not there to begin with, you cannot fill it in necessarily through a simple enlargement. Thanks for watching. +Brandon Jenkis "I import into Corel x7 and convert to bitmap." I think you mean "convert to vector". In any event, automatic conversions to vector have very poor accuracy relative to the original bitmap compared to manual conversions by people who have good vector program skills.
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 8 лет назад
+MaximRecoil That's not necessarily true in my humble opinion. The better the file, the better the result. Garbage in, garbage out. If you start with a high res tiff with a large image size the live trace can work very well for many images. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

Not sure exactly what you mean. Vector images will be fine with smaller details as long as you size it the way you want before you print films. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

Hi I have a question. I know how to use illustrator. But I want to add certain effects to my artwork. That effects are available on photoshop. So, I want to design my artwork in illustrator and add extra effects to my artwork in photoshop. But, vinyl cutter only supports vector design. So, is there any possible way to add photoshop effects to my vector art without rasterizing it?

+Mehedi Rahman Any excellent water proof inkjet film, like the one I sell, will work fine at any resolution. But with screen printing we talk in terms of LPI and for CMYK you might be at 55 to 65 LPI or higher on 305 or 355 mesh. Thanks for watching. @CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 8 лет назад
+Mehedi Rahman You're welcome. Actually vector can handle way more than bitmap and we can certainly render halftones through vector art. We can do true spot and dots with vector whereas Photoshop will halftone pretty much everything in the image unless you do it a specific way. Check out my video about the Ben Franklin 1 color halftone and then see the video about creating spot and dots with gradients of the same colors. I have over 400 screen printing videos. There are at least 2 or 3 artwork playlists. Chances are your questions will already be answered. It just takes a little time in research watching through them choosing by title subject. I do not use PS or bitmap images for my work so I am not familiar with those methods in PS.

I gave my cousin an image and he town me it was and that it was going to take 2 hours to fix it and color it in. I got on youtube and colored it in. it was so easy, took me 15 minutes.
