What's up! So today guys I'm going to show you how to screen print your own t shirt.
So the game plan is we are going to make the screen, then do a front print, back print. and heat set the ink.
What your going to do first is take your emulsion and activate it. What this will do is it will make it light sensitive. Your going to add a little bit of water to the activator. Not too much. and go ahead an pour it in. Make sure its nice and shooken up.. shaken up?.. idk shake that thing up and add it in. stir it real good. it will turn a nice turquoise color. pretty pretty pretty. so good.
Then what you have is your little trough and you fill it up with emulsion. Go ahead and coat your screen.
I did an awesome job... just great job. you know best coat of my life. Not really guys, but it worked.. and it works. So go ahead and coat your screen. I like to do front and back. Once its coated your going to put it in a dark place to dry.
So after that were going to print off the design. This has to be on a laminate or something that the light can shin through but dark enough on the spots so it won't shine through the [design].
I just bought the light off Amazon. it was a like a photo flood bulb.
after [the screen's] all dry your going to go ahead and set it up. Next you'll sticky the laminate. you sticky the laminate on the side with the ink. once its sticky place it ink side towards the screen on the out side of the screen.
Shine the light and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Once its done you should be able to peel it off and see a little ghost image. then go ahead and get a hose and wash out your design. wash it out till you can easily see through it, but don't go to long or you will mess up your design. there were some spots that were It wasn't so good so i just went back with a paint brush and emulsion and painted in what i need to fix.
You can also hold it up to the light and it will show you where the pin holes are in the screen. This will make it so there aren't any extra dots.
You can also tap the back of the screen so there aren't any more pin holes. this will help clean up the design. Next flip it over and go ahead and tape the edges on the inside of the front of the screen.
Then i just tape off everything I'm not going to print. I took an 18' squeegee and just chop sawed that into two seperate things. I also made a wood pallet. this is what i'm going to put the shirt on.
your going to want to make that super sticky so again use that spray adhesive and put your shirt over the pallet. I also put a little bit of foam core on the back of the screen - up at the top of the design and the bottom of the design. that way there would be some off contact.
So you line it up with the collar. I used this speedball ink its water based ink. We'll see how well it does. Go ahead and load up your squeegee and... two hits.. lets do a solid to hits.
if you want to speed up the drying process you can put a little bit of heat on it. Maybe a blow dryer? or stick it in the oven like a piece of pizza. Just for a second just to heat it up. What you want is to be able to touch it with out leaving any [ink] on your finger.
I'm going to do a second print. so I go ahead and wash out your screen. I can just used water cause its a water based ink. and your going to line it back up. This is the tricky part. The better you do this the better it will look.
Another hit and there we go.. we got a thicker print.
In order to heat set the ink i put the shirt in the oven for 5-10 minutes at 375 degrees fahrenheit and it was heat set.
Next clean up the screen and get the back print ready. So i tape off the first print. make sure its not going to get on the shirt from the back. re sticky the pallet. put the shirt on and align the screen where i want it.
oh yeah.. but first i put the foam core back on the back just around the design just there is going to be some off contact.
The off contact makes it so after the print the screen will lift up [from the shirt] and it will help you get a cleaner print.
Now you are a going to bake your shirt. put it on your pizza peel. to bake a t shirt... man i am so bad at accents.. any ways.
take it, make sure its dry to the touch, and were going to go for the second print.... and.. my description is too long.. haha oops.
Here are some links to what I used.. I think you can get a lot of the stuff at like Michaels? but any how:
