How to SCREENPRINT Your Art | My silkscreen print process

Rundown of my silkscreen process when it comes to making art prints! A lot of people make prints digitally, but using screenprinting to print your work can add a lot to the process--both in terms of the physical process of printing it yourself as well as expanding your choice of ink colors, paper, composition, etc. Hope this inspires anyone who's been thinking of screenprinting or trying out silkscreen printing out for the first time to make their art prints using this method.
I'm also thinking of making a video on how to silkscreen print at home with limited resources. Would anyone be into that kind of video? For more complex prints, I definitely recommend visiting your local studio, but if you're just doing 1-2 layers, or a simple composition, printing at home is definitely possible.

hey kel! i absolutely adore your work. i just recently made my first screenprint for one of my university classes, and its such a fun process! you've inspired me to be more ambitious and experimental with my next piece ;-) it's so cool how you have access to a studio, unfortunately where i live i don't think there are any near me :( so i'm going to soak up having access to the studio at my university. great video

@kelbelter Great video! Question. When you are making the screens for each color, do you have to have the transparency in the EXACT same spot on each screen when you burn them in order to have good registration? Or does the whole registration process happen after that and doesn't really matter?

@@KelBelter Yayyyy! And exactly! I was just curious about what apps you used, what you like/dislike, how you translate your sketches to digital, what aspects do you most apply to your medium of screen printing, and especially what it feels like to draw and write on it (they don't let you try the Apple Pencil in-store where I live and I'm very curious how it feels to draw on glass compared to writing on paper)? Any accessories? I'm a sophomore majoring in studio arts and I've been considering investing in one but I haven't been able to find the opinions of someone who would be using it in a similar way as I would...Thank you SO SO much, you're a literal rockstar :))

Hi Kelly! Can you make a video explaining how to mix colors to create the transparency effect? Or explain it in a comment. There's not mucho info out there. Great video, very insightful and wonderful piece.
@KelBelter
@KelBelter 3 года назад
Thanks Steven! To create transparency in inks you can add in something called 'transparent base.' Speedball sells this and you can mix it with their acrylic inks to give more transparency. You can also use an 'extender' that will make the ink more transparent. If you check out Speedball online or in a store, you can see the different options! You can also use textile/waterbased inks instead of acrylic inks, and some of those are naturally a bit more transparent than acrylic silkscreen inks. Especially CMYK process inks, because those are meant to be somewhat transparent so that you get a layering effect.

I enjoyed this video. I am interested in screening onto canvas. There is an inequality between the height of the canvas and the height of the silk screen frame in relation to where the frame lands when the hinges are closed onto my canvas. How do I get the hingeclamp base to be 1.5-2" off of the table to fit my canvas under the hinges and frame?
@KelBelter
@KelBelter Год назад
Some screen printing devices have adjustable areas so you can raise the screen up. I would recommend looking for one of those, or maybe putting a block between the hinge and the table if it's a simple set up. Since I'm not an expert on what equipment is available in your country, it's probably best to ask a studio or shop near you what your options are!

Hi Kel, I'm planning to create an A2 poster using Procreate. Does it matter if I draw it on size A4 then enlarge it to size A2 on Photoshop? Would the quality still be the same? :) Thank You!
@KelBelter
@KelBelter 2 года назад
Hi! It will be better to make it A2 size, otherwise, it will come out a bit pixellated---but if you are going to screenprint, it might be a bit easier to correct in Photoshop. Try to make the size you will print it at if you can~!

hey, and thanks for sharing your skills! still, i don't get how you center the different frames / colors to match up. can you elaborate on that?
@KelBelter
@KelBelter Год назад
when screenprinting, you use registration marks (they look like little crosses inside a circle) in order to make sure that your layers match up with one another! you prepare this beforehand in photoshop before you make the screens and print everything. I use a 'registration sheet' before printing each layer to check that the marks match up correctly. you can see a visual example here: www.retrosupply.co/blogs/tutorials/how-to-make-a-screen-print-from-procreate#registration

for this one, it's a little bigger than A3, so I printed on a film roll. The roll is up to 60 cm wide and you can print as long as you want, since it's not cut into separate sheets. But if I wanted to print it just a little bit smaller, with margins, I could have just used A3 sized film.
