It is only in recent years that I have found out about many of the products in your video. It’s the stuff that weekend DIYers don’t know about, like me previously, and can’t understand why they can’t stop their joints from weeping. I always used to think I just wasn’t very good at plumbing, but now I realise it was just my ignorance of how to do stuff properly. Wish I’d seen your video a few years back as it could’ve saved me a hell of a lot of pain and anxiety!

Heating & plumbing engineer here, jet lube V2 all the way for me. Denso or self amalgamating tape is usually used on pipes or copper pipe going under or through cavities. To prevent reaction or corrosion.

Thanks. I asked in B&q today about sealing those compression valves with copper pipes. They said you don't need a compound. Just that white tape will do. Once you tighten the screw it activates the "rose" inside thereby giving a seal. That has worked for me. Been killing my back trying to sort the toilet out, last 2 days.

I thought I come to see if Al has any solutions for my waste pipe that is in full sun and good 28 years old, and voila found what I was looking for! Although the pipe is not leaking I have discovered that it seems to be deteriorating in the sun and one edge is disintegrating so wanted to prevent any further damage by using some form of a tape. Thank you Al I will be searching for that last tape you have shown. 😘

Thanks for the tip on Fernox jointing compound. In stock at Screwfix and Toolstation so will be adding that to my inventory. I'm not a plumber by trade so not familiar with the finer art of it. I've been using PTFE till now which is a pain to wrap on a pipe in a confined area.

@@dereton33 Having looked into Fernox, Hawk White is not approved for mains water but the Water Hawk compound can be used on everything. Jet Blue Plus is also on the recommended list but that's for you experts to debate. Fernox is stocked at Screwfix/Toolstation so that's where I'm headed.

Changing the radiators at home. I’m not a plumber though. First used the PTP tape then it leaked a tiny bit so disassembled all the 7 reads dried them and used Fernox this time. It doesn’t leak at all now. Strange that this stuff is still a bit soft. Is it going to set one day or it remains soft? Just wondering if I did something wrong. Used the Fernox potable version. Nice vid by the way! Loads of help!

Hi D, hope you don't mind me asking a question about a different video, I have a kitchen tap that needs turning a couple of times before any flow emerges, I watched your vid on the top of the tap coming loose on the left hand thread from the bottom, I have just stripped it down and that bit was tight, but the circlip was in the wrong place and looked like it had worked it's way loose, I put it back in the right place but it seems very loose, am I right in thinking that a dodgy circlip would have the same effect, eg needing to turn the tap a lot before any flow? thanks for all the vids, watched a lot of them and always find them interesting, Paul.

@dereton33. Hey i have bit of a nuisance fitting. Recently fitted a triton shower and having problem with a compression elbow to inlet on shower. My problem is 2 fold i believe!!! The actual Male THREAD on the elbow has slightly worn away while tightening. ((I really should replace the elbow but that will involve ripping out tiles, backer board and possibly cutting the old fitting off with pipe cutter. Then I'll need to fit new strip of copper to old length with ANOTHER compression coupling as the olive most likely wont come off and thats all before even fitting the new elbow. Arrrrrrr - a nightmare as I was simply planning to fit new shower and job done)) I mean the more fittings the more chance/possibility of leaks.. correct? Now, all that being said, after connecting inlet to the elbow i cant get the drip to stop. I've already tried lots of PTFE which helped but doesnt seal. So i was thinking Jointing compound might do the trick. My main questions is as follows. Do you think Jointing Compound will remedy my nightmare or once a thread has perished ONLY replacing the fitting will do? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me the Jointing Compound might work.
@dereton33
@dereton33 3 года назад
I would recommend some good old fashioned hemp wound around the thread then the jointing compound. See if you can get the hemp and boss white around the around the front of the olive too.

I was working on a toilet with leak from tap connector. I fixed the leak but had created another leak from the doughnut as this was inevitable due to the fact that the existing rubber doughnut was in a bad state but this must of only started leaking as I had moved the toilet slightly when working on tap connector. I communicated this to the customer and they did not want me to go to the plumbers merchants and buy other parts but I used a universal rubber washer and had to still use existing metal plate that was rusted quite bad. It was still leaking when flushed and so I added plumbers mate around the rubber doughnut on top and to the side which solved the leak. I explained to the customer but they were happy with the end result. Is this a ok way that I had gone about this job?

No not on the threads .If you are removing the whole valve out of the tank instead of splitting it as shown on the video you will need a new tank connector washer (a straight swivel washer) or you can use ptfe tape rolled into string and wound around where the washer would go (I prefer hemp). Kind regards, al.
