thank you so much for doing all the work of sorting through different sealants , I really like the order you sealed watercolor in, I wonder if this would work on pastels as well? My two fav mediums, I give as gifts for Christmas, but feel the need to frame first. Now I can just gently roll up , tie with red ribbon, or use cardboard backing, wrap, and give! thanks again!

I've been wondering if this could work for pastels, also... I will have to give it a try. I think it will take more coats of spray fixative, for sure. My pastel layers may be too thick...

Hello! Great video, thank you for the info!🥰❤️ It's my first time varnishing anything, so I was wondering about my painting, I've used a stretched canvas, and on it I used acrylics and some watercolor as well, and I'm wondering how to best protect it because I don't want to frame it with glass. So, for my case, should I start off with the fixative spray?(I see you've used the type for pastel) and then do I have to add the Gel you were talking about? I don't plan on doing any collage on it, but I am planning on using some gold permanent ink, so I'm not sure if I should apply that after the fixative and varnsih or before. And should I use anything after the fixative spray? I have satin finish varnish for acrylics, but I'm not sure if I should use it since I've also used watercolor on the canvas, and I'm not exactly sure how to use it if I'm supposed to use it after the fixative spray. Do I dab my brush with a bit of water and then spread the satin varnish on the whole canvas? I'm really nervous about this part, I don't want to ruin my painting 😅🥺 thank you!!

Hi there! What a fun project! Definitely save the varnish for last. It will protect everything & should not be painted over. As for the fixative spray (make sure it is not workable fixative), I would use it over the watercolor before painting over it with acrylic paint or ink, or else it will not stay put. If you want more protection for the watercolor, you could put on a layer of matte gel medium. That can be painted over with any sort of acrylic, but not watercolor. I hope this helps...every project is different. Best is usually to experiment with all your layers on scrap paper. This way, you're sure not to ruin your finished piece.

@@ArtontheBrain thank you so much! I really appreciate your reply with the detailed explanation ☺️ I'm definitely gonna experiment on a different canvas to make sure of everything! I'll grab the gel you were talking about too! Thanks again and have a wonderful day and week 😊🥰

The acrylic matte varnish directions on the Blick website say to only use on acrylic. Do I need to be concerned about any damage to a watercolor painting if I use it on that?
@ArtontheBrain
@ArtontheBrain 3 года назад
Hi! If you follow the directions in my video you should be fine. I've done this for a few years at least, and have had no problems. I think the secret is to use the spray fixative first...this protects the watercolor from coming up when you brush on the medium or varnish.

Hi! Would the spray alone be enough to protect a water coloured clay pot?
@ArtontheBrain
@ArtontheBrain 2 года назад
I have to admit that I've never painted a clay pot. Just to be safe, I would add a layer or two of acrylic varnish. You may not need it, but I always play it safe. 🙂

Does it not darken the watercolour painting?
@ArtontheBrain

I have not had trouble with that, as long as I use Lascaux or Daler Rowney.

What do you mean by we could attach them to a panel and float them?
@ArtontheBrain
@ArtontheBrain 5 лет назад
Hi! Thanks for the question! I meant that you could glue your sealed painting to a cradled panel and then frame it with a wood floater frame...like they use with oil paintings sometimes. Here's one on Blick: www.dickblick.com/products/blick-wood-floater-frames/
