I’ve tried so many different ways and variations to tie down my AutoPilot 120 (12’ long) to my truck bed and this method seems to be the fastest and equally secure way of doing it. It takes me about 2 minutes to strap the kayak down.
A couple key takeaways:
-Use quality straps (Malone, YakAttack..)
-Use cam straps
-Cutoff excess strap length to save time
-Always check your kayak handles and straps for damage before driving off
-Keep extra straps in your truck
-Tie a knot on the cam strap just in case the buckle comes undone
-Check state laws based on kayak length and truck bed length
-Don’t leave a lot of gear in the tankwell while transporting
-Never leave your pedal drive unit or motor in the kayak while transporting
-Always secure any loose items so they don’t fall out while driving
-Add a flag to the stern of your kayak for visibility to other drivers
