this is a weird illusion, understandable how it broke the internet. im on team white and gold, and i cant unsee white and gold, but by turning down my brightness, i can kind of see black and blue just barely. i think it's a matter of how well your eyes process exposure, cause when he lowered the exposure i also saw black and blue.

I still only see white and gold... but my hubby now sees white and gold too after the "palate cleansing" trick, so thanks! 😄

The dress is black and blue, as proof of other pics of it later confirmed. The only particular thing simply is that both colors are exposed directly to artificial light, creating a reflection; causing for the black to look dark grey with a gold-ish effect and for the blue to look more like a light indigo color. Those who perceive light indigo as pure white and the gold-ish dark grey as pure gold evidently just perceive light colors lighter than they are when exposed to a certain amount of light. It seems to be just a harmless abnormality in one's brain/eyes. Very fascinating nonetheless!

Here's my reasoning. I always *interpreted* the dress to be white and gold because- first and foremost- my mind initially (and erroneously) established that it was silhouetted against bright sunlight 🌞 in the background, but *only from behind* and not illuminated by light in the foreground. Instead, the bluish hue would be a reflection of the dark gloomy shadows behind the camera 📸 Let's be honest; absolutely everyone in the white/gold camp *can and do* see the blue whether they want to admit it or not... We just assume based on the lack of context clues that the blue tone is the blockage of light from a dark shaded area behind the photographer that's cast upon a white dress. In saying this, it's precisely because we see the blue but attribute it to darkness that we therefore *cannot see the black.* It's the inevitable conclusion. While I always conceded that the dress I interpreted as white *does objectively have a blue hue,* I attributed that hue to the illuminant that's cast upon it, or in this case the lack thereof... *And not the intrinsic color of the fabric itself.* Once you've established the setting of the dress to be silhouetted by bright sunlight 🌞 from behind whilst facing away from it towards an area of shade, then the color black 🖤 can't possibly appear brighter than complete darkness or the *absence of a light source,* so ruling out black is perfectly reasonable. Once your brain has decided to interpret the arbitrary blue hue to be *white fabric bathed in shadows and the lack of lighting in the foreground,* then by that logic you CANNOT see the black. It's impossible in that context. And this suspicion is only further consolidated when you place a sample of the stripe color (isolated from any context clues) next to pure jet black. So assuming that the deep bronzy shade must be gold trim as it would appear in dim shadows makes perfect sense! If it was black trim in shadows it would naturally just appear pitch black which doesn't reflect light. _So therefore you must default to gold that also isn't reflecting light, hence the deep saturation._ Make sense now? *Black would NOT in any way appear lighter in shadows.* It's physically impossible. Therefore, my brain had no choice but to deduce it to be gold once I had decided on white... Which it is when you cover the surroundings. You must assume it's gold if you decide the dress is white and in shadow, and juxtapose the bronzy hue (isolated from context clues) against pure black. Because pure black IS exactly how it would appear if the dress were *actually in shadows.* Black facing shade that somehow appears *much lighter than darkness itself seems absolutely absurd.* Thus, gold 🥇 is the logical conclusion. The deep bronze hue is precisely how gold would appear in shade! Even though I now know for certain that the dress👗is absolutely and unequivocally *black and blue* and that there was indeed direct illumination of the dress in the background, my mind is still perfectly capable of seeing white and gold that appears blue due to a lack of illumination. However, once you accept that it's not facing shade and that the dress is not only backlit but also reflecting light pouring in from the foreground, then changing your mind to see *blue fabric with glossy, reflective black trim* 💙 becomes a piece of cake 🍰 thereafter 😉 What was once interpreted to be dull golden fabric that was plunged in dark shade then easily becomes a blue dress bathed in bright light, with shiny black trim reflecting the golden rays ☀️. And once you see it you can't unsee it. _Perspective is everything!_

People who see white and gold be default are perceiving the light at the right side of the screen as being in the background. People who are blue and black by default are perceiving the light to be shining on the front of the dress. Take your thumb or hand and cover up the right side of the image and try to imagine the light shining from the opposite direction of what I just mentioned and it should help you at least understand how someone could perceive it differently. Even if it doesn’t 100% change and stick for you.

Ok i just watched the entire video 4 times and only saw white and gold then i read a comment that said squint . So i squinted when he was messing with color filters and all i see is blue and black . For years i thought people where lying but I’m definitely a believer now. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE!!! 😂😂 not only that when i restarted video for the 6th time the “ pallet” cleanser changed it from black and blue to white and gold. I finally mastered this dress lol

I think for me it's a bit like how your mind fills in the colors in the dark. Because I saw the lighter picture before (as white and gold), my mind thinks it's white and gold even when it appears black and blue in the darker picture.

Here’s what helped me, friends. Focus on the black and blue picture after the gentleman adjusts the picture’s exposure. Now instead of thinking colors, imagine there is a huge window to the outside right in front of the dress. Think of it as watching a fast forwarded, colored security recording that has the camera facing the dress, and is going from night time to day time (like the sun is rising). Watch it when the gentleman does the smooth transition. You may need to rewatch the transition 1-2 more times, but keep that same mentality. It’s a black and blue dress going from night to day. Hope that helps. 👍🏼

Almost every time I've looked at it I saw black and blue except one time when I had just woken up, I looked at it and saw white and gold and assumed it was an edited version. Then I saw the exact same post later that day and it was back to normal.

To anyone who can't see black and blue, tilt your phone to the side where you're almost looking at the side of the phone. I have a red filter to darken my screen on too so maybe that helped.

Oh my god this is actually real and not just a meme to gaslight people- I saw it as black and blue initially and had no idea how someone could see white and gold unless the colors were overly saturated or exposed or something- But yeah, when I see it extremely close up, I see it white and gold clear as day, and if I blink at the wrong time it's like they color palette changes in an instant. I guess it's something to do with how the brain measures contrast or something. Actually if I look at the top section and try to focus on not letting my brain lose the impression of the white and gold I actually see a combination, looking at the top half where it's the most exposed to light, I see light blue with black, but a gold tint from the light on the top half, almost as if the black part was partially reflective somehow, giving it a shine?

When I physcially blocked out the light source with the adjusted exposure, I could kind of see it as blue and black, but as soon as you crank the exposure back up, it's just white and gold again

If you're sitting in a chair and watching from a desktop monitor: (1) Fix your eyes on the dress and slowly rise until you're standing straight up. Sitting, for me I see gold & white. After standing I see black & blue, and variations as I rise and go back down to sitting. (2) If rising didn't work as well, lean/tilt your body backwards and forwards when you're standing, like in a rocking motion. While you're standing you can even twist/rotate your body from side to side like you're exercising your waist line. (3) When I look from scratch I'm a raw gold/white dude and don't see blue/black. Instead of rising and standing per (1) above if I get on the floor and look up at the screen ALL I see is blue/black. You may have to move your screen forward to the edge of the desk. (4) If you can't rise from your chair, take a full picture with your phone. Mine is gold and white (a little bluish though). Raise the phone high above your head and slightly tilt it backwards. It is black and blue. It's all about the angles!
