In today’s video, we’re excited to share how to find the giant, old-growth cedar tree of Rockaway Beach on the Oregon Coast. 🔔 If you enjoy, this video, remember to give it a thumbs-up and subscribe to our channel! / @adventurespnw
Just how old is this enormous tree? Write down your guess now, and we’ll share the estimated age range in the video.
We’re joined today by our Little Explorer, who’s on her very first old-growth forest hike. On the way to the giant cedar, you may catch a glimpse of ospreys!
Rockaway Beach is a town on the Oregon Coast, about an hour and a half by car west of Portland. You can find the giant cedar by navigating to Rockaway Beach Old-Growth Nature Preserve on Google Maps.
Since you’ll be on the Oregon Coast, I’d recommend stopping by at least one of the beaches or overlooks along Highway 101 while you’re in the area. We stopped at Neahkahnie Beach.
If you approach the old-growth cedar preserve from the north, there’s a sign on Highway 101 marking it as the Old-Growth Cedar Trail. But if you approach it from the south, the same sign just welcomes you to the town of Rockaway Beach. That definitely makes it easier to miss the turn!
The parking lot is right off 101. As of the making of this video, no fees or passes are needed.
The trail is a fabulous boardwalk over a marshland teeming with the most enormous skunk cabbages we’ve ever seen. The bog ecosystem supports a variety of other plants we don’t see as often on our typical hikes.
As you move further along the boardwalk, you’ll start to notice some giant trees. Before long, you’ll come to the giant old-growth cedar tree itself. The walk to the giant old-growth cedar tree and back is just a mile or so altogether.

Peaceful video. Great area to explore. I'm in Florida but hoping to get out there next year. That's a huge and extremely old Cedar tree. Thanks for the video. 👍
