Great clip, good explanation 👍🏼. I find power is directly affected by the weight of the lure you’re using in conjunction with the intended presentation.

Well explained Chad. For me, the king has always been a 7' medium heavy-fast, but we do a lot more jerkbait fishing here up north. Once you step into trout, walleye and pike territory, the standards change a bit.

One of those simple but important basic aspects of fishing. Alot like cover vs structure. I couldve saved some money in the beginning by lnowing this topic. But in the end it was a good thing bc i tried all kinds of rods and now i know exactly what im looking for, for certain things. I still see guys shaking rods in the air to "check" them rather than holding by tip and supporting 20% down the tip or pushing tip on the ground.

Would love to see a video of the lures you would throw on the different rod powers and actions, so say what lures would you throw on a medium power fast action rod, or what lures would you throw on a medium heavy power moderate action rod, etc... I think it would be very helpful for the less experienced anglers and help them be able to chose the right rods they need for what they fish and prevent them from spending money on rods they might not need, although I don’t know if you can ever have to many rods lol

@@ChadHooverFishing I’ll try to make a long story short. I bass fished with my dad when I was a kid, he’s still a very good fisherman. I’m now 56, I always hunted but never really was into fishing, I just did what he told me. LOL for several years I’ve wanted a fishing kayak, and bought one a couple weeks ago. Things have changed so much, trying to learn the bass fishing game is really overwhelming. I ordered a Cashion Icon bait casting 7’ 3” medium heavy, fast action rod and a Abu Garcia Revo SX, to me this was what you call a Whistle Damn rod and reel. Almost $400 for a old 36 year career firefighter is a lot of money to spend on a rod and reel. Love your channel Sir, keep up the good work.

I agree with your one purpose rod. Moderate let's your work the treble hook baits but that medium heavy has good backbone for the single Hooks baits

I would think that the slower response of a moderate action, as opposed to a fast action, would generally result in a loss in sensitivity, though.

Hi Chad, I really appreciate and enjoy your videos. After a 25-30 year break from fishing due to life and other interests I recently started fishing again. Since all of my gear was so old and rotten I have been working on replacing it. Your middle of the road comment is kind of where I have been making my purchases. Thanks brother. I don't have the trailer any more. It was destroyed in my accident and long story short, it wasn't covered under insurance and I am just going to have to save back up for another one.

Not that you were expecting one but my apologies for the delayed response. I was on Lake Fork camping and trying to bank fish. I am really wanting to get a kayak, Bonafide SS127, to start kayak fishing. I am 6’5” y’all and weigh approximately 340 lbs. and in all of my research it seems to be the most stable and fishable for a 57 year old guy my size. It’s also middle of the road cost wise. Thanks for your quick reply and the education you’re giving me on fishing and kayaks. Stay safe out there on the roads and waters.

You are the first bass guy to get these righ. Your buddy Flukemaster really messed them up in his video :). Not his fault, everyone is conflating these. The british use a different system. They say this rod has a 3 pound test curve. It means u need 3 pounds to get the rod to bend 90 degrees. Objective, not a matter of opinion.

It also depends on brands...but a 7foot medium heavy fast action rod works best for me to do more than one thing

So my question is related to something you mentioned in this video. If you're in the creeks or more compact areas you said you like a 6'10 rod for spinnerbaits. I've had 6'10 spinnerbait rods before and I've also used 7'0 rods for spinnerbaits. If I'm in the same type scenario where I'm in tighter quarters would I be comparing apples to apples with 6'10 to a 7'0 rod or are there some benefits to those extra inches in rod length? Why do you prefer the 6'10 to the 7'0, is there a reason or just your personal preference? Thanks buddy, great video.

Because a shorter rod is a little more accurate, it allows you to cast a little closer to the water for getting under overhangs a little easier.

Does rod size change when you fish from a kayak? And how about if you are a short guy does that factor in at all?

It doesn't for me really and since I am not a short guy, I couldn't really tell you. That's actually a good question, i would assume you would probably be more accurate with shorter arms just like with the rods. Let me contact some of my friends that could be extras in the Lolly Pop Guild and I will get back to you.

I'm 6'4" and fish out of a kayak. For me, 7' is too long. By "too long" I mean it's unweildy and it leads to a lot of frustration for me. Through trial and error I've settled in to using only 6'6" med and med/heavy all fast action. Sure I lose some casting distance but doesn't really seem to be an issue. I catch a lot of bass!

While I agree with just about everything you said in this video, Chad, there is one thing that I'm still skeptical about, so maybe you could shine some light on it? You said that a longer rod provides more leverage. Now, according to my recollection of physics class, the rod IS essentially a lever, but, by increasing that lever length, you are actually LOSING leverage. The fulcrum point would be at the point where you are holding it, and the fish is applying the force at the tip of the rod. Am I missing something? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

J Holl it’s actually a good question, but leverage isn’t simply a function of the traditional “lever” as defined in simple machines. That’s based on a fixed fulcrum moving in a single plane and apply in a consistent and uniformed plane or direction. By true definition the word leverage does imply the use of a lever, but because the fulcrum isn’t truly where you hold the rod but more a factor of where the stiffest part of the rod is in the big section the longer rod will almost always provide more leverage if the power rating is constant for the comparison

I also thought you were contradicting yourself with the length/leverage thing but your explanation makes a lot of sense. I'm a beginning bass fisherman (coming from trout/fly fishing) and a newer kayak angler. I really love your channel and just subscribed...
