Gene, this is one of the very best videos I have ever watched. I learned sssooo much more descriptive, detailed, technique-specific information than I ever have in my 4 years of bass fishing. Based on this video, I'm sitting here tweeking how I have my rods/reels paired together. Thank you so much for what you've done for me to now go drop a line in the water with even greater confidence than I've had. You've really helped me! I've subscribed to your channel and set the notification alarm (which I never do!) because I don't want to miss any of your videos. I'm definitely a huge fan of yours! And, you seem like a really great, genuine, humble, down-to-earth guy...if I ever run into you it would be my privilege to buy you your favorite beverage and chat for a bit!
Thanks Gene!!!!! This was a really good video brother. I know when I first started bass fishing this was the information I was looking for and had to find out through years of experience!!!! Its cool and kind of humbling to see young anglers already knowing the stuff that took years to find out on our own!!!
This video was super helpful! I've been watching all kinds of videos and everyone talks about the rods, reels, line, etc. to the point where my head is spinning. Your video gave dear reasons and directions that will really help me as I get going. I appreciate the way you present things and your motivation behind it. I know the video is a couple of years old - but the fish probably haven't learned too much in that time so I'm set. Thanks.
Gene your growing on me man!! just watched your rod action and power explained video and then this one and I'm writing this stuff down. THANK YOU for your videos they make bass fishing even more fun.
The Mustad Grip Pin hook is by far the best hook I've ever used for pitching! You're one of the first I've seen using it. I work for the company that manufactures those for Mustad. Got some new stuff along those lines coming out soon. Can't wait!
Well a few weeks back I had the misfortune of catching some bullet shrapnel to the foot. After about 4 hours in the ER and being bandaged up, who come through the door to take my last x-Rays but the man himself. So cool meeting you man. I know I was pretty quite but in that little bit of time, it was easy to tell you're as down to earth as you seem in your videos.
@koviack no he's under cover. His real name is Henry Ross. Even though some old chick thinks his name is Harry... Harry pair of testicles. He pounded an asian chick like a mallard duck then fell for a chick with short term memory loss.
It was a pleasure meeting you at Grady's. I was the guy that asked about converting his salt water wife to bass fishing. thank you for all that you do.
Dude we need a review of the Blackout Rod. I almost bought it but went with the Omen. Great vid BTW and I'm sure it'll help many people (as it helped me.) Thanks Gene
FYI - Thanks for the heads up on the 13 Fishing Inception reel. Great reel for the price. I seem to do better with the Concept A when it comes to throwing light 1/4oz stuff. But for everything else the Inception is fantastic. Thanks again!
thanks for all your lessons flukemaster I always do what you teach in your videos I like this set up you have I'm going to getting probably different brands or cheaper but I will thanks
Gene, we've heard you reluctantly mention that swimbait a couple of times now. Haha. That seems like a good story to hear in a future video. We have all been there, man. Not fun losing a $10 lure let alone one like that.
I've come back to this video several times since you posted it. It would be awesome to have all this info in a chart or diagram. Knowing what rod you are using for certain bait types is easily overlooked with a casual fisherman. Thanks for the incite, and please consider creating a chart for us visual learners ;-)
Agree with you about the 65lbs line. I get the same comment. Usually comes from people who think you can't throw anything in a foot deep, tight salad because they think there's nothing hiding there. I prove them wrong, great success.
Great video, as all i've watched so far have been, Thanks! Question: Can you do another one, or link a list of your rods, reel, line, combos and what you fish with them if we were to go past 6 rood/reels?
Gene, you said you use your 7' med power fast action rod for spinnerbaits but then towards the end you said you use a moderate action for them. Which do you use as I'm trying to decide which I should use.
Hey Gene, one rod brand I would recommend is St.Croix they make these rods in the USA and the sensitivity is amazing. If there isn't a length rod you are looking for, you can make custom length, handles, and rod blanks. I would give them a try
BassBoys TV yeah they are nice, but I don't feel like taking out a second mortgage to buy one. For the price of one of their rods and I can get 5 or 6 really nice ones that are also USA made.
good documentary sir, I've actually narrowed down to 2 rods... a pitching Flippin rod Abu set up with 8.1 ratio and more all around rod incase I'm walking around a bunch of ponds 6'6" medium heavy citica with a 6.4 .. both 15 lb mono.... never failed me yet
I just bought 4 whopper ploppers. Cost me about $72. I need to buy an assortment of crankbaits, swimbaits, and jerkbaits. I bought a lews Mach 2 spinning reel on clearance for $100. Now I need to buy a bait caster and learn. I didn’t think fishing will be so expensive. Started off with the ugly stick pack at Walmart for 25. I now need to buy 3 more rods “baitcasters”. Ohh yeah I need a boat too. And a motor for the boat. Need cloths for fishing. Anything else I need? Forgot to say I flung half my ugly stick into the lake. I’m 3 weeks in since I’ve started fishing. Today is 8/6/19
Just got my no. 8 tackle rod the other day and I love it, what colors are best to throw for top water. Mid day, early morning, late evening, cloudy, sunny
loving the vids so far. Learning about the medium power crankbait rods and drop shot. Gonna pick up a medium power moderate action 7.4" st. croix mojo bass glass baitcaster. Curious the thoughts on it. Money is tight so its either between that or the medium heavy power model. I fish smaller inland lakes in southeast michigan im also debating on a 6 speed baitcaster or a 7 speed gonna be throwing crank baits that dive around 10 feet or less
I've seen 30 frikin trump n Clinton ads today between all the googans and gene. I can't take anymore!!!!! Quit mixing politics and my favorite sport! lol
This is an old video but I really wanted to point out how much help it was. Fishing from a kayak (not one of those mini bass boats you see people with now days) means I'm very limited. 2 rods and a 3700 is a light trip, 5 rods and 6-7 various boxes is when I mean business. Anymore than that and it's just too much on the kayak for me. Heck, at max load I have to walk/crawl around the yak just to get to everything.
Thanks for the tips. I've just started fishing and there is so much to learn about. I appreciate the help and I really like your videos. Do you have any advice for starting rods for kids (my 2 girls have shown interest, 8 and 10)
hi, i have been watching yours videos for a week , they are spectacular and very usefull, i want to ask , what do you prefer , braided line with a fluorocarbon leader or complete fluorocarbon line in the reel ? thanks a lot from argentina.
Thanks for the info. I'm new to fishing and am only up to 4 baitcasting + 1 spinning reel currently. If I were to mirror the lineup you've presented here I have a question on gear ratio & line. I didn't hear you state the gear ratio or the lb test/type line on your 7' Medium-Fast rod that you use for light T-rigs & jigs. What do you use here? Also don't think you mentioned the lb test/type line for your 7' Medium-Moderate that you use for smaller crankbaits. What is recommended for that setup? Thanks for your help.
Gene, first of all, thanks for all the great vids! Very informative!! If you had one spinning rod, what power and action would you pick? To throw anywhere from floating worms to lightweight topwater? Thanks!
Gene, what would you say for a top three lineup for those of us that have to haul our gear around lakes and up trails to said lakes for bank fishing, or for when I'm starting kayak fishing this year, and space is a premium?
fluke, my son and I mostly shore fish. having six poles and our tackle is a bit much. so my question is what two rods would you recommend. my son is only five and is using a kids medium 6' spinning rod. and a second old trout rod. I have an 8'6'' medium heavy spinning and a 7'3 casting rod.
Hey Gene I fish a lot of urban ponds here in Las Vegas and I was wondering what some good lures/techniques are for big fish during late summer/early fall? The pond I fish is 14 acres with a maximum depth of 10 to 12 feet. The water quality is clear to stained in some areas. There is an abundance of bluegills, crayfish, and other small bass. The bottom composition is mostly grass patches, gravel roadbeds, and rocks. Any tips will help, thanks!
Hey Gene, I am looking to add another baitcasting rod to my arsenal and I am sort of unsure what I should do. I already have a Duckett MMP 7'6" heavy and two 7'0" medium heavy setups. I have been debating getting the medium 7'0" Duckett. A few techniques I am wanting to start using are topwater spooks, square bills and traps. I normally use 1/2 oz lures and am worried the medium might be too light for those techniques. I have also considered adding a 7'3" MH. I know you have moved on from Duckett, but I would like advice from someone that has experience with them. Thanks and keep up the good work!
can you fish a weightless wacky senko on a med/heavy casting rod or will I need to get a different power rod cause I was looking at the no.8 blackout or the no.8 candy apple
Hi Mr. Jensen, so right now I have a 6'6" medium heavy fast action rod with an old Shimano callisto which is a 6.5:1 ratio (I know not great at all, but its only a two bearing system and its rickety as hell.) most of the ponds I fish have heavy grass and mat. I'm looking for a new combo that will cover me from frog and topwater to be able to pitch jigs, but a little bit of a rut of where I should go... Do you have any recommendations?
yeah if you 8 or 80 years old but not for these guys I am sorry but ol ZEBCO JUST COULDN'T HANDLE THE ABUSE OF THIS TYPE OF BASS FISHING. + I DO NOT NO OF ANY ZEBCO RODS THAT ARE 7+FEET LONG WITH 7 DIFFERENT ACTIONS. NOW FOR BLUE GILL OR JUST HAVING FUN NOT SERIOUS FISHING YEP THEN THE ZEBCO WOULD COME INTO PLAY BUT NOT FOR FLIPPING A HALF OZ BAIT
Hey whats up man..ive been in the fishing game close to 2 years straight now and cant get enough! Ive been using a spinning real with 8 or 10lbs mono..your opinion, should i upgrade to a baitcaster or should i use different types of lines to get a nice lunker???
I have a really nice abu garcia rod and reel combo baitcaster for my primary set-up but for my second rod do you recommend a rod more around 6ft or another 7ft baitcaster
Hey Gene, I'm trying to decide between a 6'9" and 7'2" spinning rod. If it will serve as my all purpose finesse rod and mainly for fishing around docks, what would you go with?
Hi I’m looking for a good medium heavy combo and was going to try the no 8 blackout and 13 fishing concept c you mentioned here - looks like the no 8 company may no longer be in business or at least aren’t available new - do you have any other rod suggestions and do you still like that 13 concept c? This vid is a few years old so I’m wondering if you have newer/updated preferences for this type of set up. THANK YOU!
What kind of line do you use on that medium power setup you said you use for top water and jerk baits and small Texas rigs and stuff, do you keep mono or fluorocarbon on it or braid and then just change up the leader
I have a new Scott martin Okuma 7'6 heavy for my swimbait and deep crankbait try these skeet reese rods s glass crankbait rod And I noticed my megabass swimbait rises not sinks . Good in case it comes off.
Hey Gene... I have a pfleuger spinning rod with 6 lb fluorocarbon and an abu Garcia revo S baitcaster 65 lb braid both on st croix med/light action 7' rods. Just got a Lews baitcaster tournament slp. Advice what to put on that one and what rod? I was thinking straight fluro but wasn't sure what rod. Trying to build up rods I might need.
