Great Britain mens hockey captain Phil Roper talks us through how to select a stick. Phil uses a Y1 hockey stick. He discusses the length, bow and strapping as well as giving advice to players as to how to make a choice when considering a new stick.

Do you have any comment to make, when we played with much bigger hockey sticks inEurope. Any comment as to how America loses really badly in this sport.

Nice comment. Yes, a lot of players have changed back to 36.5 inch sticks. I think this is because of the style of hitting the ball these days. You will see players holding the stick about 10 cm below the end. This is a much faster action using the wrists. In the USA, they do not have a big history in the sport and are more interested in ice hockey. The USA womens team does however have a much better following than the men and play some very good hockey.
