Follow these tips when you are purchasing asparagus at the grocery store.
Tight, Closed Tips: The crowns or tips of the asparagus should be tightly closed and compact. If the tips are beginning to spread open or appear loose, it's an indication that the asparagus is not as fresh. Fresh asparagus has tips that are firm and neatly arranged.
Bright Green Color: Look for asparagus with a vibrant green color. While some variations of asparagus can have a purplish hue, the color should still be rich and vivid. Avoid asparagus that looks faded or has a yellowish tint, as this can indicate age or poor quality.
Firm and Straight Stalks: The stalks should be firm to the touch and not limp. They should also be straight rather than bent or curved, indicating they've been properly stored and are fresh.
