How to Select Your First Programming Language
One of the hardest questions you’ll ask when you start tackling programming is ‘what language should I learn first?’ - let’s talk through some of the concerns you might have:
• It Feels Final
• Programming Languages seem very different from each other
What if I pick the wrong language?
Some languages ARE harder to learn than others. Especially if it’s your first. However, every language has been someone’s first and they’ve been through the same issues that you’re experiencing. If you feel like you’ve picked the wrong language, you may have picked one with syntax that is too verbose. But you may also be experiencing a challenge - When you start learning a new language you’re going to learn a lot - and if you’re following a good tutorial, it should even be fun.
But after you learn the basic concepts of something, you may find that the next concepts are more challenging. While you may want to give up - that’s when you’ll want to work even harder. Push through your confusion, take good notes, and learn as much as you can. By pushing yourself you’ll find that you can learn anything. We see this all time.
You’ll find that the ‘What programming language should I learn first?’ questions is incredibly popular and after a few months, you’ll find yourself offering your own advice to others just getting started.
Here are the main modern programming languages you’ll likely be considering:
JavaScript
PHP
Python
Ruby
Objective C / Swift
C#
Java / Kotlin
• Programming Project Examples
github.com/karan/Projects
Which Do I Choose?
While plenty of people will gladly tell you exactly what language to learn - here are a few considerations:
What do you want to do?
If you are interested in working for a specific company, you’ll want to take a look at their job boards. They’ll list specific requirements. Don’t worry if you don’t meet any of them now. You will. But this’ll give you an idea of the direction you’re heading.
What do you want to build?
This is one of the most challenging questions to answer. “What do you want to build?” If you have an idea for something to build, you might already be building it. Knowing what you want to build solves the ‘what programming language should I learn first’ question quickly - because the language is just a tool to get you where you want to go.
If you don’t know what you want to build, check out a site like this one github.com/karan/Projects it has a list of projects that can be completed in any language. Consider them like puzzles or challenges and start with the easiest one.
Once you select a language you’ll discover that there are tons of resources for learning it - there’s podcasts, video tutorials, books, apps, conferences, meetups - just tons of things - and while it’s a challenge to filter out what’s most valuable - as most of these resources are going to be talking about things you won’t understand yet - you want to Immerse Yourself in the Language and take it all in.
But the most important thing is you’ve decided to learn to code.
Congratulations, that’s a huge step, and if you’ve made it this far, I can tell you something, You’re gonna love it. Remember, coding is fun, and therefore learning to code should be fun too, don’t let these early decisions stress you out. You got this! Stick with it!
CORRECTION:
At 2:01 We list HTML/CSS on a slide in a list of Programming Languages - we didn't mean to imply that HTML/CSS are programming languages. They are markup languages. However, we do recommend learning HTML & CSS before learning a web-focused programming language. We appreciate everyone's concern about correcting this! ;)

I appreciate a straight answer to the question, "Which program do I learn first." You gave an answer quickly and then qualified it with using other languages while learning the first language. I hear "eclecticism" is the approach to language programming selections. So, I'll start with Python and move forward to, possibly, Java. Eddie Evans - Climate Deception Network

Start with Java to truly understand how OOP languages work under the hood and then move onto Python. Worked wonders for me. But if you're only interested in front end web development then Javascript, HTML and CSS are an absolute necessity.
@alejandroirizarrynegron1065
Personally, I would recommend starting with Python since it's more ideal and easier to learn the basics like variables, conditional statements, loops and functions. After learning those fundamental concepts, get experienced with Java to learn Object Oriented Programming (OOP).

Python is great but it have one flaw, If you will try to do something in other languages you will find that other languages are more complex if it comes to OOP (Python doesn't have interfaces or direct abstract classes). But it is still very good language to understand how programming works which will really help in learning other languages (or understanding Python even more).

I first learned HTML / CSS (not programming languages I know), then moved to Javascript, once I felt comfortable with JS, I then played around in Python, mainly building networking scripts like port scanners or TCP client / servers. Then I decided to learn C++, and I can say after learning C++, I really wish I would have learned C++ first. JS and Python do a lot for you, like dynamic types. C++ is not easy to learn, and will take a long time, but well worth it b/c after learning C++, you can pick up any language you want with relative ease. If you like web development, JS is the way to go for sure, but anything else, C++ will teach you the most. If you're anything like me, and you like knowing HOW things work down to the core, C++ is your best bet. Anyways, just my 2 cents.

Yes you technically can. It's an interpreted programming language that's made to run in a web browser though. So if you want to make web apps and simple web games js is a good choice. If you're looking into making pc games C++ or C# are the best options imo. C for embedded devices or if you are an optimisation nut. C# is really nice to learn, it's rather easy, the syntax is great and the visual studio ide is honestly one of the best on windows pcs… On mac I use codeRunner for C, xcode for C++ and visual studio for C#… (IntelliJ IDEA for Java but Java is bad)

@toby9999
@toby9999 6 лет назад
Venus Kong Yes, C++ would be a good language for game development, especially if you're doing something needing high performance. It's a language that compiles to native machine code which is unlike most of the scripting languages. People say it's too hard to learn but there is no compulsion to learn all of the features. It's vast but the basics are not too difficult. The downside is that C++ is just a language plus some support libraries. For games you're likely to need extra libraries for graphics, sound and IO etc.. though C++ is not alone in this. Same applies to Java (a language I dislike immensely). I started with assembler in the 1970s then C then C++ in the 1990s and still my favorite. Some of the scripting languages, Java and C# have also been successfully used for games and might be easier to learn but my knowledge in those is minimal. I believe Terraria was developed in C#

absolutelly no. If you are interested in designing game and making actual stuff, you should pick something else. You can stick for long time with C++ just trying to create basics (and you probably will if you are begginer)

Start with Assembler, then move on to Fortran, and finally COBOL. You will then be prepared to conquer the wonderful world of computer programming in a professional mainframe environment. Leave the toy computers and their programming languages behind and move up to where the elite computer scientists are working.

making games isn't easy as you think. For a game it takes ages to make and you need a loot of money to make one, btw you can't make a 2D game or 3D game by yourself you need to have a team of programmers and designers to make a game

Java is probably the most popular but yeah it really doesn't matter. Once you learn one of them, you can learn the others.

For me, if I learned Python first for example, I don’t think I’d like programming that much cause I didn’t know what was happening in the background. I felt that learning C, Assembly, Computer Architecture, and even VLSI, made me more interested in Programming and the work older Computer Engineers did. Now I code Java, C, and Python and love it!
