I have a question, I'm ten years old and its my dream to become an actress but I live in Scotland, so if I signed up for a Scottish talent agency, then would I still get audition requests from American casting directors
Hey there Kurt! I’ve been following your channel for a few months and it’s one of the best gems I’ve discovered as I begin my acting journey. I sincerely appreciate the thoroughness of this video but of all your videos in general. Thank you for providing your audience with valuable insights. I hope to see you on set one day 😉 🎬
Big tip on where the microphone is placed. I learned over the last few years of vlogging and uploading to YT that when the mic is down low or even at mouth level the audio can sound more tinny or nasally. If you have a mic stand that is able to go above your head and having it about three inches or so away from your face but (still out of frame) it will sound loads better. I've tested it myself and it makes a world of difference.
you are actually a fucking legend, I really hope running this channel is gratifying for you because you are doing a great job and really making a difference. keep it up!
It’s cool to know that you’re using a video editing program that I’m using very similarly to! I’m starting my acting class recruitment process within 2 weeks and I can’t wait!
I truly loved this. It's such a great way of getting inspired and actually seeing the things that are usually talked about when it comes to selftaping. Thank you Kurt :) Hope you book it!
Im planning on going to acting classes right now so not even doing auditions yet but your videos really are helpful and you explain everything very nicely. Thank you!
I would like to see you on set one day too 😁 I uploaded a reel in Actor Access and showed my mom, she thought it was real, well, if it made my mom think it was real I guess it was good 😊 you can see at Luziana Luli Brazil actor access, also in imdb and also in backstage.
Great video as usual Kurt! Sooo glad you showed that although you shoot horizontally you crop it to a vertical format. I shoot mine in my garage and have to use vertical to crop out what's beyond my non distracting background. Otherwise people will think I'm 'Buffalo Bill' from 'Silence of the Lambs.' 😉 Also kind of curious why you put your slate at the end as opposed the beginning?
For 99% of my film and television auditions, the casting directors request the slate either at the end or in a separate file entirely. Very rarely do they ask for the slate at the beginning. It's more common for commercial auditions to ask for the slate in the beginning.
Hello Kurt, as I stated in an earlier comment- great video. Q: is it ok to edit a piece of video within the bigger final video clip? Explanation: say you’re recording and you flob a line- you notice it as your recording. After recording your whole scene can you re-record just the area where you flobbed the line and edit it in during the editing process - maybe utilize an almost transparent video transition effect so it’s hardly noticeable or should the scene be one long clip without any edits in it? Your video scenes seem to all be done in one take with no mistakes or editing within each scene. Thanks
Yo Kurt you are so inspiring it is so insane you have actually influenced and showed me how great this industry is would love to meet you in person one day when i become famous like you. Love from India
Thank you for going to the trouble of showing us this process. I felt pretty intimidated by the idea of creating a professional self tape in the future, but that software looks user friendly.
I got a request for a self tape just the other day and I was not prepared. I am an amateur performer and I work as a SA, and I'm relatively new to this game. The audition was for a TV commercial. I was flattered that I got asked to self tape for it, but angry with myself for not being better prepared for it. I have since bought some equipment and have started to do some research. I just wanted to say thank you for these videos, they are really helpful. Thank you.
Omg, I just have to share my excitement over the fact I just met of on croatia's most talented actor, and I was over the moon, and since I am currently unable to attend any acting related activities at the moment, I was so happy to actually see an actor in such a remote place like this one I live in. Super nice person, and it made me realize just how excited I am to pursue this route. Sorry guys but no one really knows about my plans just the Kurt Yue followers. Have a blessed day everyone!
I love video auditions. It's a lot easier than have 25 folks waiting in the room next door. Then I'll ask for an audition from those who seem the best and closest to what I'm looking for.
Love what you’re doing, but as a Senior Actor, AEA since 1968 and SAG and AFTRA the following year, I’m not particularly Tech savy. I can’t see where you are getting certain elements to perform the desired task. I finally figured out how to crop the Slate using Vegas Studio 16, which is like a small victory, but I’m at a loss regarding trimming, joining and fade up and down. I’ve watched several tutorials and find them completely incomprehensible. Please advise… Cheers
Hi Kurt, thank you for showing your process, this is great, I wish my editing skill is as good as yours. I often have the trouble of defining my eye-line, I don't have a wall like you in front of me. Is there any tip on how to find the correct point before taping? I often use my ring light stick as my eye-line. Do you recommend me to buy a camera like yours? I mostly use my mobile phone. I tried the camera once, the file was so big near 1GB but the CD's requirement was down to 75MB, it was a hard task to compress. Thank you much
You definitely don't have to buy a fancy camera. I know many working actors who self tape with their phones. As far as your eyeline, if you can place something in front of you that is eye level that you can focus on, that would probably be best.
Hi, please can you help me? I find when I am using my iPhone to self tape. Although I am not looking directly at the camera when I play back the tape my looking angle looks wrong. Is there a set distance you would recommend to add your sticker on the wall from the camera lense? Thank you 😀
Hi - Thanks so much for the info. I use iMovie but something happens to the quality of my tapes when I upload them to Actor's Access. They tend to get fuzzy. I shoot on my Canon Vixia in 1080 but that's where I'm not sure how much to compress when uploading. (And not being very techie, I'm not sure what terminology comes into play for what I'm trying to say). Hope that makes sense?
Wow!! Great tutorial!! Looking back I can see where I made sooooo many in my first audition tape!! However, the real mistake would to have not sent it at all!! I’m so happy for all your success thus far!! See you on set someday!
Turn to Jesus before it's too late. He is ourLord and Savior and loves you guys so so much, so please make the choice follow him. Spread the word of God, before it's too late. He can return right now. Thank you, God bless you!
Wow …..Watching Hulu I just saw you in Vendetta. Question in regards to editing, an acting coach told me that I should not use a dip to black or fade to black. I m not sure if it’s because I am on smaller market than LA . I was also told not to do my Slye in vertical position however I have to stand really far back for horizontal and you can barely see me. Should I follow what my acting coach says?
Ok so I can potentially shoot the full body slate vertically? And your slate is at the end, is that normal? I’ve been sending all my auditions in with my slate at the beginning!
Great video. As a working actor do you recommend going bold with the material or sticking to every direction or suggested emotion? Has going outside the box worked for you? Thanks!
Thanks very much sir but I have a little problem when applying for a role since I registered as a member of backstage production ,when ever I apply for the role i’ll be ask to choose a payment plan and after it I’ll get stacked when they ask for a coupon.
Hi! How do you deal with the background noise if you are recording with a iphone? My iphone capture that little background noise and I dont know if it is possivel to remove it or if it is going to affect how my self tape is going to be seen. Thank you!
Kurt, I'm really glad to see your videos. I read your IMDB bio and I'm at the exact same age where you made your turning point into acting. We even did similar degrees in university! It gives me a lot of hope to start my career in acting. Great video and hopefully I can land more auditions :)
Thank you for sharing your process. A curious question, when you first started off, how much time did you put into acting a week? What did your week consist of?
When I first started I was only doing it for fun and had no plans to pursue this as a career. Because of that, it was treated as a hobby and I spent maybe 3-5 hours on it per week. As I gradually became more serious about it, it grew to probably 20 hours per week.
You must be known as a very generous scene partner. Thank you so much for your tips and your generosity to your fellow actors by sharing your experience. You are very much appreciated!
I have a question. Does the reader have lines that are on the script or do they just say something that fits? I ask because how else would the reader not spoil the movie scene?
Sir plz give us the acting agents contact info to whom you know are the best, so we didn't come in the contact of scammers or nor face any type of problem, plz sir its huge request 🙏
There are thousands of agents around the world. I only know about the good ones in my city. You'll have to do your own research to find the best agents in your area.
Still gaining a great deal of knowledge from you! I love the way you very neutraly say, "in my opinion," because we all know that no opinion is absolute. However, I must say that your opinions are pretty spot on!
Is it alright if I’m taping on iPhone, to do a full body slate in portrait mode? It always screws up while cropping in movie and zooms if horizontal, it would be much easier if I could just use portrait mode instead of landscape! If you wouldn’t mind letting me know I’d greatly appreciate it! Thank you!
A Casting Director will usually tell you to film everything horizontal including your slate but sometimes they want a full body shot of you in portrait mode holding up hands; show both sides then turn 360 degrees. They'll usually tell you specifically what they want Ideally you should be able to do both. If they don't give specific instructions for how to set up your camera it's best to go with horizontal by default because nobody films a movie or TV show vertically. And it's Ok to use an iphone for auditions, there will come times when you HAVE TO use your phone to audition because a lot of them are done via Zoom or some other live video software. My last audition was done live over zoom and if it's a zoom audition you want to test it out to make sure it works right and the lighting is good BEFORE you connect to the zoom call. It can make you look really unprofessional if the Casting Directors assistant has to spend fifteen minutes with you trying to help you get your camera angles and lighting right before going in front of the CD - which BTW, they're not going to do. Most of the time if you're not already fully prepared to audition they will tell you to figure out what you're doing while they talk to the next actor and prepare them to audition. Then they'll come back to you in five minutes; if you're still not ready they're not going to keep wasting time with you and will disconnect you calling it a "no show" which looks really bad to your agent (if you have one, they're probably going to chew you out and hesitate to submit you for anything important). Of course if it's just a self tape; not live then there isn't as much pressure. You might have 3-5 days to get it in the can; start the editing process and then submit it. But you're not always going to have that luxury. I hate them both, live on Zoom or self tape. I miss the days of walking right into Space Station Casting or Hollywood Center Studios, meeting in person, doing my two takes and then enjoying the rest of my day walking around Hollywood; maybe hit up the cafeteria on the studio lot before leaving; maybe "accidentally" (on purpose) get lost trying to find my way off the lot.
When you crop the full body slate, do the casting directors get upset about the black lines on the sides or is all they see just the video? My agent gets on us about this all the time. I’m nervous I’m messing it up when I do that.
First of all, I really enjoy all of your videos. Second, I have two questions: 1. How do you practice a scene without a scene partner? 2. Is it weird if you only have two or three acting classes on your resume?
You can practice with the virtual reader. And no, it's not weird to have 2-3 classes when you are starting. You can keep training with different classes as you go through auditioning and your career!
You can use a rehearsal app like Rehearsal Pro or Cold Reader. Or you can use a simple voice recorder. But a virtual reader is definitely the most effective, in my opinion. There's no standard amount of acting classes that should go on a resume. For many years, I only had one class on my resume because that was the only class available in my city. I would just go to that same ongoing class every week.
Hi Kurt, do you try to be off book for every audition even when you have multiple auditions that you need to do in a short amount of time? Thanks so much
I've watched several of your videos today, Kurt - THANK YOU. You're so thorough with each one, and it's incredibly appreciated. I subscribed to your YT, your email list, and liked a bunch of videos. :) I appreciate you.
Really nice setting, I'm gonna copy it right away, you just didn't link your side light, what is that? Thanks! Edit: I was forgetting, I also need the microphone tripod link.
Thx Kurt! This is my 2nd time watching this video....you make it look soo easy. What about us tech challenged actors? What do you recommend? This year I really wanna increase the professional look of my self-tapes...think maybe I'll book more! 😅
I was researching something about camera focus for my Nikon D5600...and this was one of the videos that popped up. Don't know why but I'm glad it did. I subscribed to your channel after finding it and have enjoyed your content. I also bought a Canon 80D after watching this along with the camera comparison video. My Nikon cameras are really ticked about it. I had been doing my audition tapes with the Canon Vixia HF R800. I did my first audition yesterday with the 80D and was very pleased. Thank you for the help you given me.
