Here is a video on how I interact with my clients in the sales process. The meet and greet to the test drive. Probably the most crucial part of a salesperson's relationship building with their client.

A Dave should ask more qualifying questions, 1.have you driven one already 2. What are you driving now. 3 is there a loan in this current vehicle. 4 who is the principal driver. Before the drive, you must find out if they are capable of purchasing. Losts of dreamers, engaged in a picking fantasy, not able to purchase, upside down, bankruptcy etc

Eh, really not necessary. There's time when they come back to find out everything about the client. Plus in my experience by the time clients come back from the test drive they are pretty comfortable with me which makes the rest of the process much easier. Finally, I am fortunate to work in an area where pretty much everybody has good credit and can afford what they want.

When he asked me if I wanted to test drive I told him no need. I will never buy a vehicle from any dealer that add’s on useless mark up items Along with a market adjustment. Salesman means a lot. I sold cars at a mom&pop store in Balto. Md. The best way to sell someone a car is NO PRESSURE. We were BHPH so we had to ask how much are you working with for down pmt. Usually not much and usually not good credit, but you always treated them with respect. Very important. Some how most could come up with a down pmt. from relatives or ???. They came back b/c you didn't humiliate them. But we always took test drives with every customer whether BHPH or not.

Having purchased about 20 cars in the past 25 years, I always enjoy a salesman that wants to get to know you. Like where did you grow up, what do we have in common. Do we like similar cars, what do you currently drive, stuff like that really makes me feel more like they want to build a relationship. I've gotten so many of the years where I know more about every car on their lot than the salesman and that really makes me feel like they don't even try to be a good salesman. On another note, just got lucky and got a 2LT Bolt EV in the Bright Blue by calling about 30 dealerships and found one en route that wasn't already sold. Picked it up 2 weeks ago. Love it so far.

I was able to see one on the floor but not drive it, because it was reserved. I have a trade-in & can pay the balance in cash. They sent the order to GM, but GM must notify them its acceptance of the order. Has GM an obligation to fulfill my dealer's contract with me, or can GM cancel my order?

Some simple rules when I buy a car. Don’t ask for my social # or a credit app. That’s not anywhere part of the equation before I’ve even decided I like the car or agreed to a price. I’ll walk away if repeatedly asked. My name and phone number I’ll provide when I make an appointment to come in. And when I do want the car and we’re trying to find an agreement on price don’t do a 4 square. I’ll walk away. Credit and how I’m going to pay is something I’ll talk with finance in private, not in an open sales floor.

Great video; I agree with you. I'm in my 50s and have purchased a couple of cars. Some dealerships are desperate. Heck, you can smell it on the salesperson. Here is the line I dislike, "Do you think we can get a deal done today if the numbers are right?". Here is another, "how much do you want to spend a month?" Listen, I can do eighth-grade math. So here is what I need to know, how much for the car out the door, now with the trade and 10K down? The best car buying experience was in Mini in Morristown. Here is the car, if you like it, that's fine if not someone else will buy it. Not the greatest, but there was no pressure, no "what can we do today." I want to look at another commuter car, the Buick Encore, Kia Soul, and Chevy Bolt. Here is the deal: I do not want to give all my info to the dealer to go on a test drive. When you provide the dealer with the information, I assume they make a soft inquiry.

Shouldn’t you start with what their budget is? How much they can afford? You spent all that time getting them fall in love with a car you don’t even know they can afford. But I’m sure you will do what all car dealers do and come up with some creative way to “get them into” the car.
@DaveBsellsChevy

Two reasons why I don't worry about it. 1 - 30 minutes or so of vehicle demo and test drive isn't all that much. plus you are building a relationship. if someone is in a bad position financially and you still give them the time (rather them broom them like most sales people would) who will they remember in the future when their situation is better? Plus it's good Karma. 2. I am fortunate to work in an area were the majority of our clients, like 90% have no issues getting approved for whatever they want.

Good video. My personal experience is, most sales reps are either far too pushy, or are the other extreme, they completely ignore you initially and you have to ask for help. You are left wondering how on earth their dealership stays in business. There has been the odd time where the rep is good at their job (they had a style similar to Dave), but most of them seem to have a relatively poor knowledge of their product (perhaps due to the high turnover in the industry), appear incredibly lazy, and have pretty bad people skills to boot (interrupting you, correcting you when they are the ones who are wrong, too aggressive etc.) Unfortunately, as a result, most people would prefer to go to the dentist rather than go car shopping.
