In this video I show you how to service an automatic transmission in your E90 BMW. I'm working on my 2008 335i with an N54 motor.
This car has the 6HP21 transmission which also goes by 6HP19 or 6HP19TU. This is a 6 speed ZF transmission.
I show you how to change out the bridge seal and all the tube seals along with the solenoids which do go bad over time.
In my case I was getting a rough downshift to first gear. The likely culprit was the bridge seal.
Link to a thread showing how to setup INPA/NCS Expert:

If you have Windows 10 64-Bit:

You can find the INPA cable online at places such as Amazon or Ebay. Search INPA Cable K+D Can.

I have watched an absolute F@*k ton of videos for various issues with my e90 325. This video is by far the best repair based content I have seen. Seriously, if this video was for sale- I would have gladly bought it. Thanks for the time and effort!

I feel the exact same way! This video is going to save DIYers a fortune. I got a $1200 quote from the dealer for this service on my E90 330i, and I know for a fact that did not include the solenoids or sleeves 🙄 simple pan/filter + fluid. I'll spend $750 for an entire trans rebuild + solenoids and do it myself

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I have done the oil pan/filter and changed out the oil procedure before. I bought a new mechatronic sleeve before and tried replacing it. I gave up because I couldn't figure out how to remove it even with the tab sleeve pulled down. I thought it was stuck so now I know to just simply use a flat head screw driver. Plus seeing how easy it is to do the rest is a major plus. The 335i community appreciates you!

Thanks for a fantastic video - well lit, good visuals of every component. Great way to familiarize yourself before servicing a ZF transmission. I'm doing a 6hp26 in a Jaguar X350 (2004-2007 XJ Series) - Pan gasket is starting to fail. It appears to shift perfectly, no call for solenoid replacement. For preventative maintenance, I am doing all the mechatronic seals and the bridge grommet/seal, a new pan w/filter, new connector sleeve, all new pan bolts, and 6-7 liters Lifeguard 6. My previous car (same model) with no servicing went 170k -no observable transmission issues. The 75mph impact into a stopped truck w/no lights on was the enemy. I plan to keep this car, and not drive it into things at 75 mph. This job, done correctly should contribute to longevity.

Super informative as usual. I’m about to do a fluid and pan change - I can tell there are leaks and this has me confident I can do this. 2007 BMW 335xi (now 97K miles 13+ years old, original owner). My Mechatronic was serviced at 50K miles / 5 yrs ago due to inability to manually downshift. I’m going to do the Solenoid / sleeve / seals at the same time as the ZF AT pan and fluids. Thank you!

Next day transmission fluid everywhwere... at first feeling traumatized staring at that fluid, after doing my daily vehicular diy double check and watching all your transmission videos then getting under the car to take a look, welp I'm no longer traumatized, just a little stressed but I got this.. thankyou for all the badass content man!!!!

glad to know it smoothed out shifting. my 07 525i with 140k shifts a little harder sometimes on 1-2 and 5-6 upshifts only. downshifts are perfectly smooth there are no transmission faults stored, I tried changing the pan/filter new fluid (oem bmw) then reset adaptations through ista, I didn't find metal shavings or debris, the fluid was pretty dark but just a little normal goop on the magnets. feels a bit better but still shifts a little bit hard sometimes on those same shifts. I'm going to give this a try. seems like a common thing to wear out. it's good to know yours is still going strong at almost 190k, my friend bought a 530xi with 220k and still drives it daily and it has some hard shifts but he is afraid to even change the fluid at that mileage.

@@JayBands-me4wn, it went completely to plan. Scary as shit to me because once you put it back together, your heart is in your chest before the drive. For me, there was an improvement, but not 100% better. I had flaring between shifts that didn't completely go away. I used Pentosin (spelling?) to refill, and that was a mistake. I later changed it to the zf fluid and the problem was completely solved.

The price was $40 cheaper than FCP even though I did buy the rest of the parts from FCP since I was also ordering some suspension parts. Getting to the pan on the all wheel drive E60 is a little different than on the E90 the rest of the steps are the same since it's pretty much the same transmission. FYI anyone who comes across this, replacing solenoids solved my problem, so far. I had slip on 4-5 upshift, jolt on 5-6, and 2-1 downshift bump. Codes came up 4f8A and also 4f86 for 4-5 upshift but no other codes. Originally i just attempted with the bridge and finger seals, but that did not solve the problem. I have been able to test the car on at least one road trip and a few high load shifts, and so far so good. If anyone buys a car with a higher mileage ZF automatic transmission (over 120k miles, 200k km) at the first sign of transmission issues I would recommend this service. I would recommend disconnecting the battery during this service. When putting the car back together make sure the sliding arm on the valvebody is aligned with the shift selector on the trans housing.

Do you have to code the solenoids?

Having the same issue on my 08 X5 3.0si, code 4F8A slip on 4-5 then goes into limp mode fixed in 3rd gear. I did replace the seals and the fluids hoping it will fix it but unfortunately it did not, going to go with the solenoids next, hopefully can get the correct ones. Thanks
@leifer20
@leifer20 4 года назад
@@thomasnewton5919 No coding required. unplug battery, perform service, reinstall everything, plug battery back in, reset transmission adaptives with INPA. I only experienced a handful of missed shifts, and addressed the issue within a month of it showing up. I didn't have any other slipping on any other shifts so I assume the rest of the box was in good shape. nearly 1 year later and no issues for me. Good luck.
@leifer20
@leifer20 4 года назад
@@DEEuroworks I think solenoids is best bet next, if you decide to have the car repaired at a shop you can at least tell them not to get new solenoids (you'll already have them). I bought my solenoids from pelican parts. Make sure you buy the right ones (it will say which model you have on the side of the trans. You will probably have 6hp26, i guess, but make sure. unplug battery, perform service, reinstall everything, plug battery back in, reset transmission adaptives with INPA. I only experienced a handful of missed shifts, and addressed the issue within a month of it showing up. I didn't have any other slipping on any other shifts so I assume the rest of the box was in good shape.
