I’ve never hunted a river but I do have success with a U, J and Cxx__ pattern. I love floater goose decoys and they are always my backstop. Up here I see mostly divers, woodies and honkers. It’s crazy how birds will 90% of the time will commit to the honkers over the ducks. Good and informative video you have here, good luck with the rest of your season.
I’d definitely recommend getting some honker floaters especially if other hunters in your area are only tossing out duck dekes. The pull power is just nuts man. Some flocks don’t even need to be called in and even with other groups of hunters calling them, they just ignore and stay committed. The downside is the cost of a pack of floaters, I’ll buy a 4 pack here and there throughout the offseason and I also flock the heads in the offseason too. Brands I love are Avian-x, Higdon, Dakota, and Avery. I’ve also heard of guys turning shell decoys into floaters, have you heard anything like that? Do you use any motion dekes on the River, besides spinning wings?
Ya bro those honker decoys are crazy idk how people afford 50 dozen full bodies lol. No i don't here on the rio grande the current gives them plenty of motion but if it was slower water i probably would. I've used a jerk rig on the river before but i felt like it didn't make any difference in how the birds reacted.
Probably Credit cards or buying at least one pack each year. Full bodies are useless for me since I hunt on bogs but they would definitely pull even more if you slapped them on the shoreline. That’s as realistic it’s gonna get. What kind of rigs(weights) do you use? I plan on hunting some rivers next season, I’d hate to lose dekes from the current. Have you lost any dekes river hunting?
Ya i have i think a Texas rig with an extra long lead with 6-8 oz works for me. Make it longer than the river is deep so your weights sit sideways on the bottom thats been the biggest thing I've found
No man all you gatta do is go to the game and fishes website or a sporting goods store and get a duck stamp. But you also need a fishing and hunting license to go with it total it sould be if i remember right about 40 bucks
@@riograndereaper that sounds easy to get but I don’t know a thing about duck hunting lol do you have any other type of communication besides on RU-vid like IG..
Thanks for the support bro, ya i hunted la joya today and only had one group of birds come in which is kinda uncommon but i heard that up in the Farmington area is killer right now
I've had a lot of trouble with losing ducks in the deeper part of the river. Cant wade out there. I was hoping you would make a video like this the other day haha. Any ideas on how to recover ducks that get into the faster current? I hunt Valencia county mainly too. Really enjoy these videos
Glad you like the videos bro. Ya man there for a while i would bring a colapsable poole cleaning net that i painted brown. It worked decently well but going up in shot size to a #2 plus i started useing a patternmaster choke really helped because they were dead when they hit the water and didnt swim to the other side.
Long time duck hunter but not on river. With that being said do ducks get affected by current? I've heard both ways? Is there a way to use the current to your advantage?
I think that useing the current is a natural jurk rig those decoys are constantly moving side to side. I think that one thing i have picked up on is that if the birds are weary ill through a couple decoys in the middle of the river. Im not sure why it works but ive seen real ducks swimming in the middle of the river and thats why I tryed it.
@@riograndereaper thanks for the info and quick response does the current seem to trump the wind or play a factor as to which way the birds will land in your experience?
Oh no i always play the wind if i can but i also play where the ducks are coming from if there coming from the north thay may land on the north side of the spread regardless of the wind but i would say 9/10 times thay will still work according to the wind
I do most of my hunts in the middle rio grande valley or valencia through socorro counties pritty mutch but honestly though thats just because i live in that area there are honey holes throughout the state
