@@ubrayj02 lol it’s not like that but introducing more rust than necessary is obviously frowned upon. Extremely rusty bar will fail inspection. If I really did want to be picky, was worried about the design or just didn’t like him, I could of failed it for welding the homemade “J” bars no question, that is a no no. And it’s Head D inspector to you.

@@jaxturner7288 Why is welding them bars unacceptable? The ties are only to hold them in place until poured, whether its wire or zip ties. Seems like a quick weld would do the trick and would be faster as well

@@baronvolkov6172 seems like it doesn’t it. I thought so to, awhile back anyway. Let me just first say this, If it’s in a flat slab for a shed or a simple driveway or sidewalk, nobody gives a sh*t and it doesn’t matter. However. Depending on the structural load requirements of the cement structure in question and especially the potential losses involved in the case of its failure, all of those seemingly innocent things you mentioned could potentially lead to a disaster and all of them at certain times AND on the right job site could be legitimate cause for a failed inspection. So first. Extremely rusty rebar tie wires can unknowingly fail during the pour, allowing reinforcement bar patterns to shift, that leaves weakened areas, that’s definitely a no go costing thousands to fix. Or sometimes when a few ties fail at one end of the slab, the entire re bar grid can kinda roll over on its rebar chairs and flop down sinking the grid too close to the bottom surface, causing bottom surface spalling and possibly leading to failure. Ties are cheap until they don’t do their job, then they cost owners and contractors thousands, minimum, so questionable ties for any reason should be avoided or at least will need to be addressed, both by doubling them up at the crosses and reducing their spacing on the lateral bars. Adding any more rusty materials than necessary on any of the components causes reinforcement bar corrosion to happen sooner and more severely, so it’s never a good thing to do. As far as plastic zip ties would go, because they are made from different materials than what is normally accepted as concrete structure content, and that’s because different materials would likely have different thermal expansion and contraction rates than steel and concrete, and different expansion rates within concrete is avoided like c-19 is nowadays so they would be a definite NO go, besides that they would likely also be from unproven suppliers, to the industry that is, and any unregulated or unproven materials are a no go in critical concrete structures. The ties are actually really important because they insure the reinforcement grid stays as the plan specifies. If the grid moves or fails, the structure is most likely going to have unforeseen problems and be weaker than it should be. When it happens sometimes the installers don’t notice it happened, sometimes they do but ALL Contractors are reluctant to start the job over on THEIR dime when they just got the mud poured in the forms and then the grid falls over, so often, nobody says anything and nobody can tell what’s going on in concrete until it fails. Ultimately, reliable rebar ties installed in the correct manner keep the contractors from having to decide between being the bag guy and the broke guy because often no inspector is there during the pour to catch a grid that shifted. It requires the contractor to be extremely honest and that’s harder to come by than a hundred count loop of new standard rebar ties that cost less than $5. It’s a nobrainer anytime steel bar reinforcement is being relied on, the ties keeping it in the correct place and spacing need to be reliable. If a simple cheap bar tie fails it’s just to likely the grid fails or moves, if you needed the grid of reinforcement and its not in the correct place or it falls, then the structure is likely to fail altogether much sooner than expected. Nobody should allow that great of risk to happen over a couple bucks worth of wire. Inspector or not, just saying. Now your simplest inquiry regarding welding reinforcement bar in concrete. It is rarely ever done because of the increased cost involved over tie wire when done correctly, welding it with the specific welding materials done by a certified structural welder and then x-rayed by a licensed welding inspector.... then it is sometimes allowed, but even then ONLY on the lateral bar intersections, not ever at the cross intersections, and even then only permitted when used in multiple layer grid systems over 12 inches nominal thickness and when done using acceptable practices. So because even a monkey can tie bar for bananas per hour compared to the cost of the previously mentioned process, you can see why it’s very rarely done. Usually it’s on HUGE projects that have the rebar grids erected and then exposed to the elements for long periods of time during their construction, usually it would be considered because of that extended exposure to the elements during construction combined with the seemingly silly problem of rusty rebar ties like I said before if the silly rebar ties get too rusty and they fail.... and when they are left in the elements long periods that is likely they become questionable and ties can be extremely hard to inspect or test after installation so welding on the lateral bar intersections is SOMETIMES but very rarely allowed and done. Still generally speaking regardless of the cost involved welding reinforcement bar is a bad idea because stick and mig welding add other alloys of metals to the mix which can lead to accelerated corrosion once the salts in the wet concrete contact it. And... more importantly welding causes a hot spot that cools slowly naturally which hardens the steel bar making it stiff and brittle in just that small spot, (that’s why it’s NEVER allowed on the cross bars) the bar having inconsistent elastic properties increases the likelihood of it snapping, instead of it flexing (especially in this instance since it was bent 90 degrees AND then also welded in the same area). ( that’s actually the only method I saw here I would of not passed him for, no way no how, not with a double bad practice both in the same location and then repeated throughout the footing, that =fail without hesitation. Plus any porosity in un tested or non X-rayed welds can cause latent air bleed off and that starts micro-fractures within the structure that grow upwards during expansion cycles. And if its flux core that is used the slag containing concentrated impurities when left in the mix can induce dissimilar metal corrosion, where none of that would of ever occurred, if the welding process didn’t concentrate and then force those impurities to the surface. There’s a lot of ways to mess up rebar with a welder. Even if you are a great welder yourself and already somehow have the proper materials on hand (unlikely) still only the lateral half of the connection job can be substituted with welding so either you break out two skilled trades and tool sets to do the job or just the much cheaper one (tie wires) with far fewer opportunities to actually cause total future structural failure. So you see depending on the circumstances and the importance of the structure involved, normally irrelevant details or seemingly arbitrary materials can and do absolutely matter. Chances are still any slab you are doing DIY style, none of this matters one bit. If your project or experiment presents zero risk of causing injury or great loss when it fails like a simple shed slab or sidewalk, like I mentioned before, you don’t even have to worry about any of this crap until you either got concrete above your head, holding people up, water back or people out, then you need to worry about silly rusty wires and “compromised steel reinforcement bar from intense localized heating resulting from non acceptable grid connection methods or processes being used and picky pricks like me. Till then bubble gum yer bar together or just throw it in during the pour, won’t matter when your concrete does what all concrete eventually does, cracks, just a little sooner than it had to. Whooptydo no town floods no house collapses. Don’t stress about my prick details until they matter.

Thanks! On commercial projects sometimes they run another roll of rebar of high to stabilize all of the J bars. We have also use the type that has a stake welded on the bottom that you can beat in the ground but I would rather not have to be any extra stakes in this rocky ground

@@PerkinsBuilderBrothers My General Contractor Father in law liked your method of setting up the J bar. He was concerned it wouldn't pass inspection here in California. He and I will be building my home here on the Central Coast hopefully next year. We have been looking for reasons to use our welder and this would be a good one. I'll have to do some investigating, because we'll have two foundations to do as well some retaining walls. Digging your channel and picking up tons of tips for our build. Thanks a lot!!

Have used with a big company here doing apartment foundations & basements. Very expensive. Always keep a wire roll and nippers on belt, old school best.

I cut the wooden handle off, put the hook in a cordless drill. it works pretty good. Not as good as one of those tie guns but better than nothing.

I think it works pretty great. Especially since we only do steel about one or two days every five months
