How to set Kz650 float levels and synching the carbs 1.

If someone were to ask me if there's a single thing that causes the most problems it would without any doubt be carburation, particularly on multi-cylinder bikes, so this won't be the last time we return to this subject across multis and twins.
The bike may have been laid up for years, maybe in less than ideal storage ( if at all) with old fuel in the tank and carbs turning into a stinky varnish, then a hard glaze blocking jets, fuel tap, sticking floats and slides, and causing one headache after another.
However , if you want to get the best out of the engine there's no alternative but to keep at it and in fairness its seldom you can't rescue the carbs and have the bike running like a top- even if it seems like you'll never get there at times.
Once you have cleaned everything , replaced needle valves, jets, gaskets etc as necessary, and the carbs are ready to set up, the most critical initial settings are the fuel levels-everything will flow from that and if they're not right the bike will never run as you hope.
Kawasakis of this vintage ( and maybe later-I dunno) don't use the usual vernier/rule method of setting the float levels, but a small level tube that screws into the float bowl drain plug and allows you to see the actual level of fuel in the bowl-then adjust the float accordingly. Its a little tedious but essential if you want your bike to run well - so its worth doing.
Once set up we'll pop the carbs on the bike and synch them up.
This particular old girl was supplied by my friend Jim Wolfe at All Brands Motorcycles in Muskegon, Michigan and is making a really nice bike so thanks Jim.
If its a little repetitive I've put some teasers in the vid to show how the recommission is coming along-so watch it all. :0)
Thanks, Rod

I think you do a great job discussing the process to achieve a set of carbs with the correct fuel level and balanced.

I use the same setup on my 31 Ford, I will take a drain screw and size it and look for something unless you know where to get a fitting?

Rod, do you hook the vacuum lines for the gauges to each intake carb holder port?
@rodcurrieclassics8102
@rodcurrieclassics8102 Год назад
There's a little adapter on each manifold port to plug the vac gauge pipes on to. On Hondas you take a wee threaded plug put but the Suzuki GSes, and these Kawasakis use the same carbs with the little adapters on the manifolds as standard.

Hi there. As I recall I just put "float level tube" or the like in Ebay and got a hit. Try a few combinations and you'll get a hit.Thanks for watching

Hi Luke . Thanks fort the kind comment. I did another vid on exactly the same subject where I got closer and you can see better the difference it makes when I adjust the floats.

Hi rod, can't see where your Mark's are!! You may need too work on your close ups?. Very informative and great information but can't really see what you are doing. Have a 78 kz 650 in Florida and am originally from Suffolk UK. Have lots of mechanical experience, ex race car mechanic . Can't seem to find good information on float heights. But obviously need a fitting with a nipple to make this work!

Hi Aron. Thanks for your comment . You're right. I did work on my close-ups for the next vid and I hope that's better. Its called " Kawasaki Kz650 carb set up and Synch" . Have a look and let me know if you think it's better. Also the carbs on that film were much further out of synch so as a "Here's how" medium I hope they were better I bought the little level tube and fitting in the States. I'll see If I can find the vendor and post the link here. Thanks again, Rod

Hi Rod, well I set my floats to 23mm and 2 overflowed on me, I'm guessing 23mm is a guide and the way you do it is better .or I need new float valve and seats as well, did you ever remember who made the tool?
@rodcurrieclassics8102
@rodcurrieclassics8102 3 года назад
Hi Aron. I measured them out of interest after setting them up with the level tube and 25-26 mm was the mean. I'm sure you checked both of the floats ( in each carb) to ensure no twisting of the "yoke" between them throwing your measurement out. I did look for the purchase detail-it was a USA outfit-but couldn't find it .Let me have another look and thanks again for the comments. ps I love these bikes but the carbs are notorious leakers and new needles and seats is the only way to be sure you're not pulling the carbs off time and again. How do I know? ... learned the hard way I'm afraid. :0)

@@rodcurrieclassics8102 thanks Rod, yeah I always wanted one of these bikes and no stranger to motorcycle carbs. I took my time with a digital caliper getting them dialing them in only to have them throw fuel out the overflow. This has been a constant problem since I bought it, I have very little history apart it came from Alabama. I bought it from a guy in Atlanta who couldn't get it running and gave up. I went through the ignition system and did a a full timing procedure and it fired right up. Then the carb issues started! Didn't leak at all and randomly it would throw fuel out the overflow. Also noticed that if I disconnect the fuel line it has fuel running out, correct me if I'm wrong but it shouldn't do that? It's a vacuum demand system. So maybe that combined with some dodgy valve and seats might be my issue?

You're a total disaster when it comes to sound managing, camera positioning and acting. But You do know Your carb stuff, and that's what's important here. 😃
