How To Set The Perfect Monitoring Levels For Your Home Studio

We hear frequencies differently at various volume levels. We hear less bass when it's quieter, and more bass when it's louder. In this video, we’ll walk you through 5 steps you can take to calibrate your speakers to a set monitoring level suited to your studio space. This will help you get the most accurate response from your monitors in your studio every time you go to mix or master a track. Your ears will become used to the level you set and you will intuitively recognise when your tonal balance is off or if the track is too loud or too quiet.

Thanks very helpful, but if my monitors have a bass know do I adjust it with my volume meter as well or how should I have it while mixing? High low? I usually just have it in the middle

Killer video! But, just one question: when adding the 500hz to 2000hz filter, the overall volume gets lower, should I compensate it in order to get the -9LUFS?

Another question, is there any method like this but applicable for headphones?

Yes

Regarding headphones, not unless you measure the loudness somehow, which is hard. I’ve had conversations with producers who get the ideal level on monitors, get a sense of that volume, then try to replicate on Headphones.

@@Masteringthemixlondon Thanks a lot sharing this knowledge, that makes the video twice as killer!

How can I do if during my mixing process I do not reach -9db lufs? For example, I don't mix with limiters until the end, so in my mixing process I am below that volume, how is it done in those cases?

Mix into your limiter from the start :) . Reverse engineer your track. It will help you set all your levels from the beginning.

Thanks. How would we do this for headphones? (A lot of producers mix in headphones.) (For example, I use Shure SRH940 with ToneBoosters' "TB Morphit" plugin to correct the EQ curve and (optionally) studio speaker/room emulation, such as JB isone Pro or Waves CLA nx. If I had money, I'd get Slate Audio VSX since it includes all of the above, including multiple high-end studio emulations. Sorry for the novel.) :)

if you know the sensitivity, impendance and output i mW you can calculate it. Just look for "Headphone volume calculator" by headphonesty and at the spec sheets of the stuff you use

what volume you should Target doesnt depend on room size like in this video. I personally would recommend 85dB peek to reduce the risk of hearing damage.(85dB(A) 8h/day , 40h/week) Every +3dB halfs the time you can listen without hearing damage. The safe listening is A-weighted,slow (you can look it u on wiki for example if you dont know what it means) For the final Mix/Master i would turn up the Volume but reduce the time i listen to it accordingly to make sure my ears are save.

There is so much shit about audio out there. Your video isn't. Got a new sub!
