Very helpful video. I recently got on the same page as my parents for NAS benefits. And despite all of us initially resisting it, due to physical distances we think something like this will help us a lot. So, now I have a solid idea of what to aim for now.

The biggest thing about enterprise drives for me is not just the longer life span, but also the longer warranty [typically 5 year, vs 1 or 3 for others].

Linus, you should do a video about the best way to rip DVDs for use on a home media server. I have a FreeBSD box running Emby at home, and ripping my DVD collection has been the biggest obstacle for me.

Linus! Please make a 2022/2023 updated version of this 'media server' video. Something to hold a minimum of 200TB of 2160p/1080p + PCM WAV/FLAC content. I'm guessing this would have to mirrored by another 200TB worth of (back-up) drives, in case of failure?

I have plex running on my Server (X3650 M3), hooked up to my NAS. So I was able to give it 24CPU threads to deal with transcoding the HEVC Blu-Rays that I rip and store on it.

I didn't realise the 6 tb hdd I had in my pc was normally used for servers, that's cool.

Been using Plex with one of my very old first gen i7 systems and it works a charm.

So would this work for video editing? Offload your clips and edit them from a different PC? While also archiving certain b-roll clips for later use?

We use kodi on our phones to connect to the rasbery on the tv in front while my old gaming pc runs the server with enby. Pc spec is 6 gb ddr2 ram, gt 240 gpu and some core 2 duo or something cpu. It work great. Thank for some useful information Linus.

I'm in the process of setting something up for my home. Two things I've learned. 1. cables - make certain if you're using USB cables to connect drives to a PC that they are highly rated for data transfer and aren't old/intermittent. 2. File names - ex loves to not recognize files that SEEMINGLY are named the same way as other files that work. I'm still in the process of working through this.

I just re-purposed an old HP Pavilion desktop we bought years and years ago. I installed Debian Linux, set up Plex, Minecraft, Rust and a private web service, upgraded it to 16 GB of RAM and upgraded the old dual core Athlon II X2 to a Phenom II X6 CPU so now it can handle multiple Plex streams while friends are playing on my Rust/Minecraft servers, all simultaneously with no issues. I moved the motherboard over into a newer case with better airflow, upgraded the power supply, and installed a 12TB Western Digital Gold drive for storing our media files. The whole thing is plugged into an UPS along with our router and the media converter owned by our ISP so even when the power flickers or goes out (which happens quite frequently in eastern Kentucky), the internet and everything stays running and I have time to notify people who are using the server at the time and perform a graceful shutdown instead of having everybody randomly disconnected in what could be precarious situations in Rust or Minecraft. The whole thing is managed over SSH so it just sits on a shelf I built for it back in a closet next to the UPS and router and the only time I ever have to touch it is to turn it back on after a power outage, or to clean out the dust once a month.

Maybe not for tech quickie, but you could do a more complex video of how to setup a pfsense or freeBSD router/firewall with a NAS on it. One box, security, and local network storage. This would either be setting it up through a squid proxy or running two virtual machines in Linux. Just a thought as it combines multiple rigs into just one, which is a boon for the home techie.

Much easier and cheaper to use a old pc, fill it with hdd's and use plex/serviio/whatever media server and place it in a cold room, (cellars works fine) and use remote desktop connection. Set it up with a vpn and a torrent client and remote dl whatever you need.

I just use Infuse on my iPad and Apple TV for watching movies and tv shows stored in my NASs. It does everything starting from organizing and fetching data and arts to doing the transcoding on the client device. Pretty amazing but only for Apple ecosystem.

do you need a router for a NAS device or can I connect it directly to my desktop PC and use my prepaid wifi?

What container is best for storing blu ray rips? I have a QNAP NAS server with built in transcoding, but I'm afraid some of the rips are going to have too hight bitrate (typically 30gb for a regular movie in mkv). I've got handbrake, and with RF20 it reduces the size down to about 4gb. But what container to use? And what setttings in handbrake? And how do i make handbrake work faster; new cpu, gpu, ram etc? Have tried to read ut on it, but hard to get a definitive answer.. some seem to tolerate mkv and mkv only, while others praise mp4 for its compability..

I'm building a media server, how do I transfer pictures/media in an ext4 format from a thecus N5550 NAS onto a EXTERNAL hard drive to Windows, so I can use the wd red I have in the thecus N5550. I'll be using unraid, what hhd can I use being on a budget. Are seagate hhd's a good choice for the server?

If I have 12 drives for media (I.E music, pictures, exc) and 1 drive for my security system plus a cache drive for read/rite speads in a custom build case what raid would you suggest I run for the whole thing?

Question can I use an nas be use like a external harddrive? I want to use the nas to add more hdd as I need and add more hdd to backup(2 hdd for storage and 2 more for backup) and connect to my PC directly via USB 3.0 instead the ethernet cable. Is this possible or I can only use the nas with ethernet cable to internet router?

What if I want a place to store/backup all my Lightroom photos and access them live from either computer in my house in real time? Is this a viable option or should I look into something else?

i have 4 Sata II internal hdds that i want enclosed and run externally and all must be ON and fully powered at the same time so i can have my windows 10 laptop run a media player that chooses random video files from these 4 drives to play, like a jukebox.. but i have only one usb3.0 port available on that laptop. So i figured a hub of some sort would work but there are so many to choose from. I also have some ethernet ports available on the router that this same laptop hooks up to wirelessly by wifi.. What should i get? will this work for me?

I have plugged in 1tb and 500gb hard in my modem (standard old shaw modem don't know brand name). I can access data from ES explorer when I am on Android which is mobile and TV which has Fire stick or explorer in case of pc. I know I don't have that much space but still good enough to watch movies from. I am getting solid 5 mega byte speed per second (not bit) which is enough for movies. Can you you explain extra advantages do I get if I have PC. As you already tried to explained by saying extra computing power but I still don't understand what am I missing. In my case it's only one user or max two users using network drives.

I have a plex server running from a nvidia shield with two 5-terabyte hard drives plugged into it (Movies + TV) and it’s the happiest I’ve ever been with a tech purchase. More than capable computer, and even handles transcoding like a champ!

That's basically what I've already done. I also use a Synology NAS, but I have Western Digital drives instead of Seagate. I'll have to check those high capacity drives out someday though.

What is best WIFI router that offer atleast 100+MBps over wifi.? I have a ASUS RT-AC66U B1 AC1750 Dual-Band WiFi Router and attached the NAS to one of the eth port. But, when i try to upload data from my MBP(connect to 5ghz wifi) to the NAS, its dead slow.(~25MBps)
