Follow along to create a Little Red Advertisement Devouring Monster! Pi-Hole is a self-hosted, network-wide, ad-blocking system that runs on a Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer. A completed system will filter all your internet requests meticulously and only display what you want to see.

Furthermore, Pi-Hole will stop devices from leaking personal information out of your network so if your IoT Fridge is spying on you going to be able to find out 😊. This can also pre-emptively prevent (hidden from you) Crypto-Coin mining from occurring on your network. This will protect your entire local network and data. You can even set up parental controls to censor adult content. Pi-Hole also auto-caches so the response time of your internet browser can be significantly faster if it has already cached the desired webpage information to your system.
Pi-Hole will create and operate as a Domain Name System (DNS) pathway for your internet system. With a completed system your Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer will take all the internet data coming in, filter it meticulously, and only display what you actually want to see. If particular data is blacklisted your Router/Modem won’t even be able to download/cache/pull it from the internet. This saves bandwidth. You set this up once and any internet-connected device (Phone, iPad, Smart TV, Computer, or IoT Toaster) will have its internet requests pass through the Pi-Hole system and filtered. This system is more efficient and better than downloading Ad Blocking Browser Add-Ons on each of your devices.
For clarity, there are three main ways to set up a Pi-Hole System. First is the easiest and the method I demonstrate in this video, using standalone hardware like the Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer. Another option is running Pi-Hole as part of a virtual machine. The other option is to run Pi-Hole containerised with Docker or Kubernetes. The latter methods are more technical and make it possible to efficiently multi-task with hardware. The Pi-Hole project is a great platform to jump into these bigger concepts but I will provide the most direct way to get Pi-Hole running on standalone hardware.

A PiHole was one of the best additions I made to my home tech arsenal. The browsing experience is so different once you remove all the garbage. I also learned that my smart TVs make THOUSANDS of requests a day, trying to send or get data from their respective motherships. Sorry TVs, no way, you are there to display the picture from my consoles or Apple TVs, and nothing more.
@Core-Electronics

When we first set up the Pi-Hole it was amazing to check the logs after the first night. There was thousands of requests being blocked between 1am and 4am from all our devices phoning home. Was happy to put a stop to that.

@Bond2025
@Bond2025 7 месяцев назад
Your TV is making thousands of requests as it is programmed to make contact and get ready for further commands or services you use. If it can't connect, it keeps trying and just clogs up your network. The Alexa and Fire devices do the same. Battery life will reduce quite a bit, even on phones, if a lot of domains are blocked. Even a simple connectivity check is being blocked for Windows and Android. People have now resorted to Allow Lists to correct all the problems made by people creating lists. The main reason is BlockLists put together by people that haven't a clue what they are doing, they just get everything a phone or TV connects to and block it, leaving users with errors, loss of functionality and a rubbish user experience. I used the popular ones and they blocked cloud services, which broke most of the Internet. That's because in their race to get to the "mine is the biggest list", they never checked them or did any research. Look how many boast about having a million sites in a blocklist, all of them have very little experience and spend most of their time clicking on ALLOW. The fewer the better, the default lists work perfectly well from PiHole and AdGuardHome.

I really like your videos and thank you for making them. As someone who is actively trying to learn more about Raspberry Pi and Linux in general, this is incredibly helpful. I just want to add one small bit of constructive criticism; I notice that when editing the audio for your videos, you're using some sort of de-noiser to clean up the audio but you have it turned up way too much. Either that or you have a compressor that's way too aggressive. It's cutting out parts at the end and beginning of sentences where you speak with a little lower volume that really shouldn't be cut out. That being said, the videos are informative and amazing and I appreciate you making them. Have a wonderful day!

Nicely done! very well explained, especially for folks that don't have the techno knowhow but would like a simple solution for blocking ads. The only difference with my setup is I've installed it using Raspberry Pi without the GUI, just makes it a bit lighter. I then SSH onto the Pi and run the commands required to setup the Pi along with Pi-hole. I currently have my Pi-hole running along side my pfSense firewall as the current offerings available on pfSense only offer pfBlocker which is somewhat broken. Again, nice job on your explanation of installing Pi-hole.

Great tutorial and excellent demonstration. Your guidance absolutely looks comfortable for beginners aswell. Pro tip: It is advised to have at least two identical units with their own IP on one's network in case one unit stops working. Otherwise you're cut off the outside world. Most routers accept multiple DNS servers in their DHCP bulletin they hand out to clients. I always have two up and running as redundancy, it helped me twice due to one having a seized power supply.

@Bond2025
@Bond2025 7 месяцев назад
Not correct. If you are just referring to PiHole stopping working I will agree as it's not very reliable and does fall over and stop working regularly if it's not eating SD cards by constantly writing to them. I have used AdGuardHome for 2 years on ONE Pi3, then a Pi4 and never had a problem, plus it does DoH/DoT as standard and can be updated by the click of the mouse in the main page which takes seconds, it has never failed as the program is far better and more professional. If you want fallback for PiHole errors/failure, set the secondary DNS on your router to NextDNS for example. You're all using the PiHole wrong anyway as people that copy each others set up videos fail to understand the basics. Simply sending all DNS requests in plain text on PiHole does nothing for privacy, your ISP still inspects traffic and sells your data. Using it for adblocking doesn't work that well as things have moved on, the same for tracking and phone Apps mostly bypass the DNS. You need to set PiHole as a recursive DNS server - there are some videos about how, also why this protects your privacy. The Internet has moved on and PiHole is still stuck in the past, it has taken so long to accept it has many problems and fix it, it will never catch up. Why pay more and go to all that trouble of setting up new equipment as a firefighting technique because people writing PiHole keep making mistakes, or not fixing errors? They seem to take error reports as a personal attack. I've never once had AGH fail on a Pi and it gets used constantly. PiHole had to be reinstalled every few months and I went through a number of SD cards due to the poor programming causing it to destroy them. I even used a workaround to stop the Pi writing constantly, but that only lasted a few months. The SD cards were all known brands from official sources, so not cheap fakes!

We need something like this for cars. It is more and more evident that cars are the worst offender in terms of privacy theft and data leakage. Cars nowadays also connect to the internet and they send out a lot of data about the users. This must be stopped and allow owners to have their privacy back, have their internet browsing experience safe from ads or malware or spyware.

It's not lost on me that companies now aren't satisfied w/ an average profit margin, they want absurd, mind-boggling wealth profit margins or else.

Cheers mate 😊. And that is no good. If you check the full written up article it'll demonstrate an alternative way to update Gravity, that may be your solution.

One thing that would be nice to mention is that some routers (like AT&T) don't allow assigning custom DNSs. So I have to manually assign it everytime.

any videos you could point to that explain this?

@@johnlocke3481 no, I just found out myself after I tried to set my router DNS to the pihole and did some Google searches finding people complaining about not being able to do it.

@@graysonsmith7031You mean you tried to setup the pihole address as your DHCP DNS right? If you hardcoded your router DNS to the pihole directly that would probably would be problematic. If the ISP modem is your router I would ask your ISP if their modem can be set to bridge mode (dumb repeater) so that you can put a decent router in between that allows you to set the DNS properly for DHCP clients. One thing I have seen from an old wireless ASUS router was even though the pihole was set as the DNS for DHCP clients, any time the pihole was down DNS requests would still work because the router was setting itself as the secondary DNS. Once you have a primary and secondary DNS you might find the queries are split between the primary and secondary (negating the pihole at times).

not clear on this part, do you connect the pi to your internet provider and then to your router. does the pi have 2 ethernet ports to achieve this?

Question : Does it make any difference if build a pi hole on a Pi Zero or older versions of Pi(2 or 3)?
@Core-Electronics
@Core-Electronics Год назад
Pi-Hole is not very CPU power intensive so all older systems will work just fine 😊!

I am very late to the raspberry pi game but I plan on building this project as a starter project. A question that I have is, does the native raspberry pie UI have some kind of browser to be able to get to the webpage noted in the tutorial or do I have to download something to get out to the internet?

I wonder if this can work with one of those wifi cellular home internet connections? The router is in the cube I think. Or do I need to put my old router back in? I looked into using this app years ago but it seemed very complex. Thanks for making it clear.

Heyo, flick us the question over on our forums: coreelec.io/forum Our staff check there several times a day during work hours and someone can help you (and if anyone is having the same issue its easier for them to find), we aren't as frequently on RU-vid support. Cheers mate!

This was great. Thank you so much! Any reason not to just add all the lists on firebog?
@Core-Electronics

You might find that by adding all the lists you end up with a lot of false positives. But if you're happy to tinker and add things to your allow list, it's probably fine.
