First of all I want to thank you for putting this together... I need to make better use of my shop space, so I got your PDF "tool" to help layout your shop... It's really nice that you have a lot of common tools measured out. One critique: The floor plan grid was too light for my printer so I drew up my own on graph paper at 1/2" = 1' scale. And of course I needed to measure out the locations for doors, windows, electrical, and custom made items, so I made some cutouts for them... And after I got all that jotted down I immediately began working on rearranging my floor plan... except I'm finding out it's a floor "pain"... LOL. What I've got for a shop area is an enclosed patio space about 12' x 22' so it's probably the size of a 1 car garage. Also the kind of DIY projects I work on aren't your typical workflows, I don't really have specific kinds of projects... it's whenever I need something made, and the shop can be idle for long periods of time too. But I love having the shop when inspiration strikes to have it ready to go and be useful! So if I am put in a category: it is weekend DIY'er.

This is awesome!! I'm building a house (they just started cutting the 1200 ft long driveway last week) and it will have a 16'x33' woodworking shop. I've been trying to use Sketchup (long learning curve) to design my shop and failing. This old school method of layout is exactly what I needed. I'll be meeting with my electrician in about a month to go over where all the electrical goes, and I kept agonizing over getting it right for my tools. Knowing I put the 240 volt outlets in the right spot, especially the one in the floor for my table saw (getting a SawStop) is important to me. Being on a slab you've only got one chance (unless I wanted to tear up the concrete) to get my floor connection done right. Thanks for putting this out, and thanks for the content of your video's. I became a subscriber about 6 months ago and love how you teach the skills you know. I did some woodworking about 15 years ago, and now that I'm retired I'm looking forward to getting back into this, and passing my knowledge on to my 8 grandkids.

@petenelson8136 Год назад
@@alexwbakker Thanks, I never considered channels. I was looking at putting in conduit under the slab and having outlets in the floor (well actually in boxes above the floor so dust wouldn't get in them). Channels with metal covers may be a better solution, though I'd still be concerned about dust collecting in the channels.

Shop setup is something that I'm constantly struggling with. The shop that I have is about 350 sq ft and already had benches with cabinets built around around 1 full wall and part of another. The other speedbump I'm hitting is the ceiling is only a little over 9 ft tall. I'm still building my tool collection so I've had to be very creative but I'm thinking it's time to rip out the benches and cabinets to start over with something that fits me better.

I have approximately 850sq ft and finished working on the outside around a month ago. Half of the inside is uninsulated and unsheathed. Once I get that done I'll be installing a load bearing beam around 16' long where the back wall of the original workshop was. I built it in two phases because of a limited budget and time constraints. It will be open plan then with two five foot wall sections for storage cabinets and tool racks. It's my second workshop build and one thing I've learned is to put all my machines and benches on castor's. The ability to be able to move things around at will is key.

I would love it if you would take some time to explain the decisions you made with respect to overall style, height, vises, and work holding options. I am right on the cusp of building my first true woodworking bench and I find my style very similar to you with regard to the balance you strike between hand tools and power tools. I can't seem to find the video where you were talking about the non profit you started for disabled woodworkers so figured I'd post here. I wish there was something for someone like me for that. I'm 39 and have a lot going on. Osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, my left leg has issues with blood flow so a bone called the navicular in my left foot basically died and is dissolving. But In my state and my age none of this is considered a disability. Being a woodworker for many years I'm afraid it's getting to the point I won't be able to do it much longer because of things like not having a planer or jointer and having to be on my feet for way longer than I can be to hand plane. Its sad that the tools that would allow me to actually get back to doing what I love full time are so expensive. Since my state doesn't consider any of this a disability I don't get disability. And I've seen your program and a couple others that requires paperwork that I can't get because, it's not considered a disability. Even though I can't be on my feet longer than an hour without days of debilitating pain. It just sucks. I wish there was more kind people out there or more programs that would be able to help me.

It would be nice to verify what I've planned so far will work. Even with a 1050 square foot building with a 10 x 12 office is included, things might be tight because of my 5 x 10 CNC.

There are too many that do this just for RU-vid cash. Many that I follow and find informative, but they are not being truthful like 3x3, she does it strictly for RU-vid content, Stumpy has even built a second shop to keep the studio shop as a makebelieve woodworking shop but his info is also interesting the whole game is just deceitful and not what 90% of the hobbyist are looking for.
