So, in this video I'm gonna talk about how to install your ethernet switch. So, let's say I have my laptop here, and I really want to connect it to my network. So, I'll take a little ethernet cable, and plug it to the laptop; and on the other side, of course, it has to go to my router. Let's, oh no, I'm out of ports on my router. All my ports are already full, because I've connected them to all my other computers. So, what are we gonna do?
This is where the ethernet switch comes in handy. As you can see, the ethernet switch just as a bunch of ports on it. So, to connect to the network what I have to do is first, take one of the ports that are already connected to the network, and move them over to the switch. Now, the reason I'm doing that is because I need a free port on my router, so I can connect my switch to it So I'm gonna take another ethernet cable, plug that one in; and then, the other side goes to my router.
Now, it doesn't really matter where you connect the cables to, as long as the order is correct. The specific port is of no importance. So, as long as I connected the switch to the router, everything that's connected to the switch, is also connected to the router. Basically, the switch just extends the ports that are on the router.
So, now I have to just connect my laptop over to the switch, and I'm done. Everybody's online. The laptop is connected to the switch, the switch is connected to the router, and everything that's connected to both the router and the switch, is on the network. Now, this is a really good trick if you have, for example, another room in your house that has a bunch of computers in it that you wanna connect to your network, not wirelessly, but with an actual cable. This means that you only have to really run one cable over to that room, and then just hook it up to a switch that has more ports.

On some switches (including the one in the video) it does matter which port is used as the uplink to the router. Notice how he used the right most port for the uplink, which is the correct one for that switch. Note: This requirement can vary for the same switch depending on age/firmware, so if you have one where it doesn’t matter, that doesn’t mean it’s the same for everyone.

PLEASE HELP !!! my switch (unmanaged TP link 16 port TL-SG116) doesnt have a separated port for the router It seems . Does it matter on this switch? Also... I have been having horrible Wifi drops . Do I need to turn my router to AP mode ? Do i need a separate AP ? My router has the option on how to use it. Its an Asus RT-AX86U... Any help would be great ! I have a rasberry pi 4 next to everything which emits a blutooth signal I believe.. could that be causing interference ?
@googlewolly
@googlewolly Год назад
@@bryonhulcher851 With respect to the switch, it should not matter at all which port you use. You should literally be able to use any port on the switch to give it internet. That's how mine (also TP-Link) works. As for the WiFi dropping, difficult to say, as that could be numerous things.

Actually the specific port is somewhat important. You have to connect the router to the uplink port on the switch, which is usually the port that appears to be separate from the rest. The specific on the router doesn't matter.
@DarthBaeza
@DarthBaeza 2 года назад
Yes, he failed to say which specific port was input. Yes, we should know but some won't. I checked on another video and it verified that. I wasn't sure.
@Jayrod64
@Jayrod64 Год назад
@@DarthBaeza Some switches are auto sensing, so you can plug the input into any port and it should be able to connect immediately(once you plug an ethernet cable to device). As a rule of thumb, I usually use port 1 as the input in the off chance that it's not auto sensing, because port 1 is usually the input anyways.
@eeiko321
@eeiko321 Год назад
@@Jayrod64given that this video was 10 years ago..maybe back then the routers weren’t auto sensing and should’ve been described? Also does the new switches require power?
@Jayrod64
@Jayrod64 Год назад
@@eeiko321 Currently the ethernet switch that I use is unmanaged, and it does in fact require power. I have a TP Link CAT 6, 8 port Ethernet Switch(paid about $20 for it on Amazon). Unmanaged ethernet and/or network switches are almost always auto sensing, whereas routers almost never are because they have own web GUI to change various settings. There are some cases however where a wireless access point has a certain port set up to be FTTH as well. Comtrend was like this with their DSL modems that also happened to support fiber optic internet connection, but they have since moved to much better models that are essentially a router in all but name. The newer models are basically a really decent 802.11 ac router, as while FTTH(Fiber to the Home) does require an ONT(Optical Network Terminal) just outside the house, it then is terminated into an ethernet connection by the time it's inside your house. It's a topic a bit beyond the scope of just routers and switches, but one which nonetheless fascinates me.

Check the manual for your switch to make sure all the ports are auto-sensing, meaning it doesn't matter which port you connect to the router. Most new switches should work fine but some might still have a port dedicated to connecting to another switch or router. Also, if you didn't power cycle the router and the printer, the printer's IP might be having some sort of conflict.

Would just like to add for the people who do this when they hook up the switch for their Xbox or ps4. It does weaken our NAT type from open to moderate or moderate to strict. You WILL need a direct link from your router to your Xbox or ps4 and in some cases your PC.

That is possible, but most switches made these days should be able to sense and adjust for either type of cable. The difference is that in a standard Cat5/Cat6 cable both ends are wired the same. With a crossover, the 8 wires on one end will be arranged in a different order, which was necessary with some older networking equipment or if you connected 2 computers directly to each other. Most networking equipment these days can sense that and adjust automatically, but maybe your switch does not.

If you're trying to combine them to double your download speed, no. I believe there is equipment out there that might be able to do that, but it's not something the home user can probably afford and the ISP's of both connections would have to cooperate and the likelihood of that is slim.

The biggest issue of this set up is any of the computers connected to the switch will be throttled and speed will be Capped dependent upon the switch's capability to process packets. Which usually is much slower then your router.

Take that old cable and hold the ends together side-by-side so that you can see the colors of the individual wires going to each of the contacts. If the wires on one end are in a different order, then the cable is a crossover which means your switch might not have auto-sensing ports. What model is your switch?
