I love your videos... I'm new to sailing and your guides help me drastically. Thanks you

Very timely! About 15 minutes before watching this I was shopping for a whisker pole. Now I'm looking forward to seeing how the spinnaker pole works. I never thought of using a separate line to control the pole. Thanks! :)

I think Pip is very good as a presenter. She has a relaxed way of delivery and is clear. These videos are probably meant for people who are quite experienced rather than beginners.

Awesome video - Pip is a legend. The block on the boom for the twin headsail is a great idea too1

Thank you I did learn a lot and who wants to produce a training video done in high wind conditions, Some of your viewers need to understand that it is what you know after you know it all that matters.

Never having sailed, I had not a clue what you were trying to convey. What I did learn was how complicated a task it is to sail. Easy to see that a novice sailor can find trouble everywhere.PS: I did sail a Sunfish cat one summer day.Great fun!

move the vang out to the toe rail, pull down, this will stop the main sheet from rubbing on the spreadders. it also acts as a preventer to some extent.

There should a troupe of 'Yachting World Dancers' for the intro music.

Instead of focusing the camera on the skipper so much, focus it on the guys setting up the pole and various lines.

which of the two methods mentioned is the most efficient? twin headsails seems to be safest, but is it then less efficient?

Women in light wind condition. I have put up a spinnaker in heavy wind manytimes. Did not learn a thing from this video.

so. You're one of these guys who already knows everything about sailing? congratulations, thats a very small group. in fact You're the only one. MORON.
@wilfdarr
@wilfdarr 7 лет назад
Admiral Genius No, he (and I) don't know everything, which is why we're here, and wasted 5 minutes of our day (which you might gather I don't much appreciate), AND we didn't learn anything (nothing to do with the presenter being a woman, and rather has to do with a lazy video). It's a video trolling for clicks: good title, but nothing presented you wouldn't learn on your first day out. I've already watched much better today and I'll find better yet I suspect before today is over. You want to call him on his sexism fine, but don't call him a moron for saying he didn't learn anything from a poorly made video.
@wilfdarr
@wilfdarr 7 лет назад
Admiral Genius And to further clarify, if this was "Jim Bob's sailing blog" I wouldn't care (I wouldn't be here bordering on being an ass), in fact if Jim Bob had said I don't bother flying a spinnaker and instead here's what I do…fine, maybe even a thumbs up. But SHE does fly a spinnaker, and she's just instructed us to do 95% of the setup for flying a spinnaker, and called it "hassle free": it's disingenuous. When I come to Yachting World to see a video they have from a professional sailor, there are certain expectations, and this feels more like false pretext.

Very good video, thanks. On my last boat I had a Selden boom which had a cast alloy 'handle' in the outboard end for attaching the preventer. My current boat, like that in the video, lacks this and I'm always concerned that an accidental gybe will put enormous strain on the clew attachment as the preventer tensions against it. Anyone got suggestions for avoiding this?

not a huge fan of the extra sheet.. It doesnt seem to have any great advantage. Rather it means a crew member has to be reaching out to try and grab a clew that is some distance way from the boat. I much prefer to use existing sheets. As Gybing is as simple as picking up the lazy sheet and swapping ends on the pole as you would with a kite.. horses for courses I guess. .

Useful video - thank you - but why are three introductions needed? The first 45 seconds of this short video is wasted. Please get straight to the good stuff. :-)
@wilfdarr
@wilfdarr 7 лет назад
Mauser M03 Blog RU-vid rates videos by seconds watched (or rather seconds watched adds points to the algorithm) so the more extra seconds you watch, the higher their video rates…and both you and I and everyone else watched an extra 15 seconds…that's why.

Darn, I thought this might be useful for us. We have a simple boat, no spinnaker, so I thought this would be the perfect video. But turns out you need a spinnaker POLE, with all the associated lines, which kind of misses the point for us. And we have only had one head sail and only one single track in in the foil, so the twin headsail trick doesn’t work for us either. Any other tricks?

In light wind ? Just fly your jib wing on wing. Takes attention so a bit tiring if passage is long - but is it long ?

In a video you should demonstrate how to do things rather than talk about it in my opinion.

drop the accent. i know you can. then you can be understood by non whatever you are
@wilfdarr

So you have a spinnaker pole, rigging septate spinnaker sheets, pole up haul, pole downhaul, you're 95% of the way there, that's your definition of hassle free, I'd hate to see what you would consider "a bother"! Why not just go the one extra step and actually fly the proper sail for your point of sail?!

Not every boat has a spinnaker & sails can tear.
@stoutyyyy
@stoutyyyy 6 лет назад
Spinnaker tears, your boat doesn’t have one, also it can be fun to try different methods of doing the same thing. Admittedly this is terrible for a race setup, but for yachting it’s fun to just play around with your boat, and see what you can do. Not to mention the spinnaker is a very fiddly sail, quite annoying for long-haul downwind sailing.
@Wataheadable
@Wataheadable 5 лет назад
@@stoutyyyy agreed. We keep ours below deck. This probably benefits a shorthanded sailor the most. Keeps you on deck, and doesn't require you to haul up a large spinnaker.
