How To Set Up In Ear Monitors on a Budget

In this video, we review my custom In Ear Monitor solution specifically designed with budget in mind.
Wireless solutions are great but very expensive.
And also, potentially unnecessary. If you are stationary and have access to cabling, then why not consider a WIRED solution?

Well done, Matt. I stumbled upon this same solution a few years back and it's been great. We use a mix of PM55s (separate controls for mic and monitor) and PM351s (separate controls for mic, monitor and instrument). Even better, we use their PS16 Power Center to distribute a single monitor out from the main console and power to each personal monitor.

The on stage sound and the echo at my old church were so insane that I used to have to run my church sound through the on stage monitors while only sending the vocals through the mains. It actually sounded ok. This proves that audio techs have to toe the line between genius and insanity. LOL

hey Eduardo. sometimes, yes, the best solutions are not actually the best at all. it's what works! Sometimes we have to be creative and think outside the standard box. That's how i ended up with this inear solution. The obvious choice was just to go and get some wireless kits but no money! Money often forces us to be extra creative haha
@evanwindom3265

I've been in the same situation, and you're right -- you can create a livable mix by just adding vocals --- right up until someone wants to record the service, or pipe the music into the foyer, kitchen, parking lot, etc. Then ALL they hear is the vocals because nothing else is being reinforced by the console.

LOL. Yes insane or genius I’m not sure I’ve done a few gym-notorious I seem to have a technique push it until you lose clarity then pull back.
@imark7777777

@@evanwindom3265 that’s when you take an aux send or a sub group and feed that, which does complicate things as now you’re running to mixes.

Thank you so much brother Matt. This video was a blessing. Our church platform is set up sort of in ward like a theater stage and with stage monitors there was so much feedback going on around us. If the monitors were too low we couldn't hear to well. If we raised the volume higher we get a whole bunch of feedback from all the mics on stage. This helped us so much. Now we will only run the preacher mic, and have the instruments and choir mics low on the stage monitors since the choir can hear through front of house because all the instruments will be in aux send in this wired in ear system. Once again thank you so much. God bless you.

Good info. Keep in mind the number of individual mixes you can have will be dictated by the number of auxiliary sends off of your FOH (front of house) mixer. Another trick is everyone having a small mixer, like a Yamaha MG08, where you receive a mix from the FOH to your personal mixer, AND connect your mic or instrument in your personal mixer and then send it on the FOH. Advantages. 1. You can balance your own vocal or instrument volume against the mix of other vocals/instruments you’re getting from FOH. 2. You can turn yourself off to FOH if you need to tune or figure out a part. That is, you can still hear yourself but no one else can. 3. You can play material from a laptop/smart phone/tablet. You might need to listen to a riff or beat in a song. You can also conveniently play it for others if needed. 4. Any user can have a mic set up dedicated to communicating discretely with other musicians. Ie. “talkback”
@richardmorris363
@richardmorris363 3 года назад
PS the reason I gave the Yamaha MG08 as an example was that it has XLR and 1/4” outs.Depending on how you configure it, this will eliminate the need for a direct box. Soundcraft Notepad 8 or Allen & Heath Zed6 are also an excellent options

Hello everyone. If I may add, I recently bought the KZ ZST in ear earphones. For the price ($19 on Amazon), those IEE can't get any better: dual driver, detachable cable, and adjustable ear strap. If you are on a tight budget, those are a great choice.

I do the exact same thing. I have the Rolls PM351 on pedalboard powered by daisy chain. Mic and bass go in and then carry on to desk but I have my own volume, my aux channel from desk comes into the aux in on Rolls to give me everyone else and has its own volume on the Rolls too, then I run it up a headphone extension cable taped along the length of my guitar cable, and where it splits at the base of my strap I plug in my Bose QC20i noise-cancelling headphones which sounds awesome and isolate really well. As a bass player, I really appreciate their awesome, full bass delivery. Anyway, just thought I'd share and give a kind of testimonial for this approach. I recommend this exact setup to everyone. Super cheap and totally bullet-proof.

Hey Matt, I would suggest a fourth reason for in-ears might be for portability. Specifically wireless system though. It means there is nothing to setup if you tour or play in new places a lot. The transmitters would sit in the amp or effects rack, and each member would have their own receiver.
@MattRandallProductions

I have found that the Bose Soundsport in-ear wired headphones provide the best sound and more importantly, best fit for ~$100. Unfortunately, they are apparently MD'd but you can still get them on Amazon. No ears are the same as far as fit goes so, try several out before you make your purchase. These can stay in all day and I don't have sore ears. The sound is exceptional. Great summary too Matt. We have been using the Presonus Studio 32ai and the Rolls IEM amps. Works like a champ. Make sure that you use the ground lift for clean sound.

@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 7 лет назад
selvin saenz hi thanks for the kind words. Glad I could be of some help! With regards to the PM1, I think you might mean the BEHRINGER PM1? If so then yes that is another option. I have no personal experience with it but here are a couple of quick points- 1. It is designed to be worn on your belt which means you have to have a cable run up to your belt. 2. It is no power source which sounds great but without any amplification power source you are probably likely to have low signal level Shure also make a wearable belt pack but it's a bit more expensive. Thanks again for the question and please subscribe if you haven't already as we will have more videos on this topic coming up!

I can completely relate to everything you shared. We had a guest speaker get up to preach and his mic didn't work because the FOH was off and the sound guy didn't notice due to all of the blowback from the wedges on stage. To me, the biggest challenge in a solution like this is getting the guitar player who "HAS TO HAVE" his amp on stage and "HAS TO FEEEEEEL" his instrument vibrating his bones to even consider the use of any IEM solution, wired or otherwise. We've had people offer to completely fund IEM systems including personal mixers, and the musicians refuse to even consider them.
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 7 лет назад
+Evan Windom yeah that is a challenge for sure. To be honest I don't really know what I would do in that situation. Pray for their hearts? That's ultimately what it might come down to. There is no musical reason for having the amps on stage like that in my opinion. Perhaps offer to move the amps AND the musicians offstage? :-)

how would you hook up the rolls headphone amp?
@eminence55
@eminence55 6 лет назад
I would recommend getting a headphone ext. cable with 1/4" male end instead of 3.5mm male end (and same 3.5mm female end). The 3.5mm jack on most items(headphone amp) are not as strong as 1/4" jacks and tend to break easier( from my wired in ear experience over 6 years of use with wired in-ears). If the cord is tripped on( or any type of force..its own weight even) there is more force on less material with a 3.5mm socket
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 6 лет назад
+Chad Parker to be honest Chad, I complete agree. One thing I have found, almost a year now into running this setup is the 3.5mm plug on the rolls amp is not as solid as it once was. I’m always finding it comes out slightly.

Hi Matt, nice video and nice explanations. I always was very unsatisfied with my stage sound - either there were no monitors at all or they sounded so bad that it was no pleasure to play. So I was looking for a decent wireless system and took a chance ordering one at aliexpress (the link at the end). I wasn't expecting something special and as it is in the 2,4 GHz frequency I heard that may be very overcrowded. I should expect lots of interferences etc. Do I received it a couple of days ago and checked it out. The earphones are very good. They sound almost like my Sennheider HD 250 linear II and way better than my AKG K271 and Sennheiser HD 265 linear. They fit very nicely into my ears without disturbing after an hour or more wearing it. The TX and RX got 30 channels to choose and the transmission is HIFI. And yes, from time to time you hear something like a short buzz or click noise comming from interferences, but it was not that bad and did not bother me. The noisefloor is very low. You can just notice that the equipment is turned on. If I would have known that before, I would have ordered a bigger pack with some more receivers. Here is the link: de.aliexpress.com/item/TP-WIRELESS-2-4GHz-Professional-In-ear-Digital-Wireless-Stage-audio-Monitor-System/32760221874.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.hJeNBO

My one issue that has held me back is no information of feedback protection on those units. I know this video is old, but maybe you'll see it and reply. So if I understood you correctly, you taped the guitar cable together with the headphone extension chord, correct? Doesn't the extension cable feel heavy tugging on your ears?? Or did I misunderstand?
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 5 лет назад
I see your point but the because the cable is tied with the instrument cable then basically no that isn’t an issue. The way I run the instrument cable through the guitar strap it means the input for the headphones on the extension is just sitting there and doesn’t pull at all.

Hi does the behringer ha400 4 channel headphone amplifier works for that?
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 6 лет назад
I have no personal experience with the ha400. it is similar but it only has one input. So you could use it to split one monitor input signal to 4 musicians. But they won't be unique or personal. in other words, whatever is in one persons ear will be in the others. The preamp on the Rolls I would assume is a little cleaner and louder than the Behringer but that is not based on anything other than opinion and experience with other Behringer products.

+Matt Randall, let me first thank you for a very informative video. Btw, you mentioned about clicktracks. Would you recommend 8 channel Behringer Di800 Ultradi Pro for connecting signal from iPhones and laptops over to the mixer for backing and click tracks? Thanks in advance.
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 7 лет назад
there are many ways to get signal from devices into the mixer. If you have audio from an iphone or ipad then a simple DI will do the trick. If you want to run audio from a laptop just out of its headphone jack then yes again a simple DI will do just fine. Something like the Radial AV2 for this is very very good. If you want to run multiple sources out of your laptop, say a click track, and various other backing tracks or stems and you want to run them to separate inputs on your mixer then you will need an audio interface. I have no specific experience with that Behringer DI. Do you have 8 different iphones or ipads that you need to connect up? If so, then it should be just fine. But it's overkill if you only have 1 or 2 obviously. Ideally, you could run all your clicks and backing tracks off a laptop using a DAW like Ableton Live. You will need an audio interface for that.

Thanks Matt, your response is very helpful! Yes, I was thinking of also having our instruments plugged into individual DI boxes then going to the Mixer, to eliminate guitar amps. This is on top of the DI boxes I was planning of purchasing for the device with Prime. So that would be around 5 DI boxes (total of 749.95USD for 5 Radial ProD2 ). Di800 Ultradi Pro is 119.99USD and has 8 channels, so I thought it might be a more practical and cheaper solution.

On a more serious note, I encourage everybody to check out Takstar wireless stuff. A personal setup is only $79. Paired with a QSC or even Behringer digital mixer , you are good to go for a 5 piece band. My group has had no issues with this setup for four years now.

The answer depends on whether you are asking about plugging drums in or giving the drummer a headphone mix? If you want him to have a feed from the mixer then yes you need to run a line out from your mixer into the headphone amp

Matt, thank you for this video. i am a noob and still confused. So, can I run this to hear my electric guitar during a show? I read the earlier comment about setting up with a guitar but i really didnt get it. So from the "AUX out" of my pedal board, where do i plug into the Rolls? If I use the "aux out" frim my pedal board, then how to i hook up to the guitar amp?
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 6 лет назад
+thermalxx99 hey thanks for watching These are designed to be used to connect a monitor or aux send from a mixing console not a pedal board. You CAN use the power supply from your pedal power or similar to power it but your pedal board won’t have an aux send. When you play guitar live do you have a mixing console that all your gear routes into? Do you mic up your guitar amp? If you do, the you could run the microphone directly into the rolls box first and then run the rolls into you console. Otherwise ask your audio engineer to give you a feed from the mixing console

The thing that wasn't mentioned was the Rolls amps require linking from a hub directly from the snake to the box. This is how you would power the amp. www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=PS16 this will power up to 8 PM boxes via splitter cables, either the PM351 or the PM50s shown in the video. This can be used with out a power cable from the pedal board if your band didn't have that option. I personally use a Rolls PM55P www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=PM55P plugged directly into the Aux from the mixer. You can still get your own mix through it and it is battery powered. I love that monitor box, plus I use the cheaper Mee headphones with it when I make my music videos. They cancel the sound and my mic picks up my instruments better with no accompanying music bleeding through. Hope this helps!

The PS16 is not a requirement, just an option if you want to use multiple units feeding from the same monitor source. But every Rolls monitor amp can be used individually with its own included power adapter.

The TRRS headphones really comes down to the jack that they’re plugged into as the ground is not where it supposed to be and is being used by the mic. So some jacks don’t make contact with the actual ground and I’ve had mixed results with 1/4 inch adapters. you can now at a reasonable price get TRS to TRRS adapters in almost any variety. But yeah there’s a lot of cheap junk out there especially white stuff well I find the Apple ones not bad they would look out of place and I’ve seen people do it.

this headphone amp isn't going to do that for you i'm afraid. But if you're running your voice into a mixing console, then the console may have the ability to run a compressor on it before it sends the feed back to your ears?

Hey Matt, excellent video; very helpful. Have you tried the Mee M7 Pro unit?? I ordered a set and am anxious to give them a try. As a bass player, I'm looking for low-end (they're specs are 10 Hz to 20kHz, dual drivers, both dynamic and balanced armature types). I hope they "deliver". I'm also on a worship team and we use a 32 ch. Heath and Allen digital board and individual monitor mix boxes for each player/vocalist. We plug our IEMs into the microphone stand-mounted boxes and have total control over the mix; sort of like the AVIOM system. Keep up the good work and Blessings to you ...

Hey nice video! I want to do in ear in our church but my aux is only 1 what would be the possible solution to this?
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 5 лет назад
Ok if you have only 1 aux mix what you can do is this: create a global mix for everyone that has a bit of everything in it. Then using the rolls pm50s box, you plug your global aux into the monitor in. Then the rolls box also has a mic in and through. So this allows you to plug in a mic or a guitar amp or a bass Di or An acoustic Di or whatever you have and it gives you separate volume control. So if each singer or instrument had their own rolls unit they have two inputs : their own instrument or mic and the global mix. They can have as much of themselves and as much of the global mix as they want this way. Bit of a cable mess but it works!

Good job, Matt. I bought an in-ear system for my band (they subsequently paid me for their receivers), but I had a devil of a time convincing them to use them. To this day they seem to prefer wedges. The main reason I got them is to prevent the vocals from going flat trying to sing over monitors. With three vocals and complex harmonies, the in-ears really improved the sound. Now if they would just use them...
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 6 лет назад
Just take those wedges away and they’ll have no choice!
@imark7777777

I had this idea back in 2010 unfortunately headphones weren’t manufactured at a reasonable price with cheaper alternatives so we were in limbo of whether the Church or the individual was going to buy them. Either way after getting the 24 channel personas board I worked on getting the headphone amp boxes and swapping out our monitors it worked great when people were using it. It also had the added benefit that if they wanted to they could control their own mix with an iPhone oh that was partly the problem is a lot of the numbers at the time were android users and personas refused to support android. or if they didn’t we could still mix it on the board. My favorite function was I could solo the bus and hear what was going on to help them make adjustments and set up some pre-mixes. and not immediately turning the bandmembers in the sound technicians as that’s the number one issue with in ears as the band members each then end up being their own sound technician and sometimes don’t know that some sounds can class with each other. I even went as far as building a custom snake using cat five cable actually it was cat seven I figured better cross talk isolation. My eventual plan was to have 8 channels head over to cables to the stage and then break out to 1/4 inch cable carrying audio and power to each headphone amplifier so there was only one cable and not a ton of wall warts. The company actually makes a power distributor but it distributing one signal to 4 outputs with power so you end end up with just as many $50 box and power bricks as headphone amps. I got it all done except for the power supply, which at the time was going to be a computer power supply again before I could get reasonable cost 12 V power supplies with high output current. We got down to two wedges on stage we had one person who refused and the other one was just kind of a a fill wedge in case somebody wasn’t using in ears or if there was some thing going on like a dance etc. Then almost 5 to 10 years later I ran to another church with a similar set up using the same headphone amps, it was still back at the time when I hadn’t seen anybody else to do that.

@MattRandallProductions

+AirunDaPriest you will need to take an output from your mixing console to get a monitor feed into it. Usually an aux channel or a sub out or something. Unless you are talking about the through function in the amp? The pm50s has a way to let you plug a mic or other thing into it directly and then run it out again to a console. I didn't go over that feature as I don't use it for that purpose.

Great option man! I myself am looking to feed "click" to everyone in the band, and possible in the future the actual monitoring of what we're playing (to really get rid of floor monitors). I got some questions for you if you'd be so kind. (1) If you have 5 of those personal monitor amps, one for each person, what does your set up look like in the mixer board? How do you send monitor signals from your mixer to all 5 monitor amps? Sorry I'm no expert in mixer boards. (2) Let's say only one of your five people needs to move on stage. Are there wireless solutions you can attach to this amp's out? For example, instead of plugging headphones directly on the output of the monitor amp, you plug some kind of "emitter" and then use wireless / blutooth headphones to pick that up? Have you seen something like that? Thanks!
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 6 лет назад
+Juan Ignacio Saba Veloso Good questions. If you have 5 of these boxes and you want to create 5 separate mixes then you will need 5 aux sends or monitor sends on your mixing board. I’ve got a video coming out very soon which we will talk about how it is all set up. As for wireless options, you wouldn’t attach a wireless to this directly. You would just use a wireless version. Unfortunately these are not in the same price range at all really. The M3 unit I mentioned at the start of this video is still one of my favourites. But it’s around $700. I’ve never tried anything that sends a signal wirelessly over Bluetooth like out of the headphone amp. Don’t even know what to use sorry. Stay tuned as I will go into all this in more detail soon

Thanks for this. I've read some reviews on the Rolls PM50s that noted some sound quality/fidelity issues with running every instrument through the boxes rather than straight into the board; did you notice anything like this? I'm considering getting one of these boxes for each member of my 7 piece band for a simple, mobile, "more me" control. We play a lot of dive-type bars and I'm thinking this may be a good solution to being able to actually hear ourselves without a ton of stage volume. Thanks!
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 7 лет назад
i can't honestly say i've even tried this feature of the pm50s. I simply use them as headphone amps to take an aux signal in from the board. and then each user has their own mix control through an app on their smartphones which can control the monitor sends on the digital board we have. this is supposed to be one of the key features of this device so it would be a shame if it worked the way you described it might. there's another one too, the pm351 which can take a microphone in as well as an instrument in and has stereo balanced outputs. perhaps that might be another good one to check out? thanks for watching!

Questions:Does this only work with an electric drumkit?I have another question.What about electric guitar sound?Does the guitar player need an amp modeler?My experience with in ears at one of The churches I have been in the past was that : yes it brought down the overall volume and soUnd engineer was able to controle the overal volume and mix more. But the whole thing sounded really bad, in the end, because our sound person wasn't a trained sound person (a big problem in many churches I have been), and had no clue about how to properly make a bass or an electric guitar sound. (EQ, balance, effects in general)The musicians (apart from the keyboard player) have usually far less influence in how they sound and how the total mix can come across.Suggestions?(Praying for a talented sound engineer aside)
@MattRandallProductions
@MattRandallProductions 7 лет назад
thanks for the question! I think though you may have misunderstood what this does? This is quite an involved question so if I miss the mark, let me know and I'll try to answer it again. First off, what the Rolls PM50s is ...is simply a headphone amplifier. It is designed to take an audio input source from a mixing console and amplify it so that you can plug a set of earphones in and hear it. How the audio gets into the mixing console in the first place is an entirely different story and not really related to this video I'm afraid. The ONLY reason this lowers the volume of the stage and gives the sound engineer greater control is because by using these to distribute monitor signal to the band on stage, I no longer need the onstage floor monitor speakers. This does not replace a guitar amp or a drum kit. You can use a standard acoustic drum kit and mic it up into your console and then send that audio to the headphone amp. You can use a standard guitar amplifier, put a microphone in front of it and send that input into the mixing console and then route that audio to the headphone amp (just like I do for electric guitar). The key here though is that it really doesn't matter how you create your audio (mic'd up guitar amps, amp simulators, electric/acoustic drums, bass guitar amps vs DI) all the Rolls PM50s is used for is amplifying the audio routed out the aux/monitor sends from your mixing console to your ears. Now, in terms of the other topic of having a trained sound person, yes this is always a big challenge. My advice to you is not to find a trained sound engineer but rather find the most musically minded/gifted person you can spare from the stage and put them behind the sound desk. They will learn what all the buttons do easy enough. You can't have the musicians worrying about how they sound while they are on stage. That is the job of the sound engineer. But overall the switch to inears does not mean removing all your amplifiers and using simulators and what not. It simply means not using any stage monitors. And if you want to use guitar amplifiers, try locating them off stage somewhere where they can be run as loud as necessary to get a good tone out of them without impacting how loud they are on stage. I think it's really time for me to make that follow up video showing the entire solution, not just the headphone amp itself!

This isn’t really about connecting a single guitar and amp to your ears. This is really a solution for those who play live and have their equipment fed into a live mixing console or audio desk. If you just want to monitor your guitar/amp only then you would need to put a microphone in front of the amp and plug the microphone into the rolls box.
