This video is mainly a help for new users.
It will go over: checking for EMI and how to deal with it, Ground Balancing and using the Ground Probe to determine the ground mineralization and type of mineralization, Finding the best filter for your ground (really the main point of the video), a little bit on recovery delay and sensitivity zoom.
Note - Confirmed by White's; You do not have to re-ground balance when changing filters.
Enjoy,
EMS

I don't know if you know the story of how this machine was made, but it's a pretty awesome accident. There was a guy working on a new machine and he had 200 programs he was looking at to figure out which ones he wanted to put into the V3i....but then he left his job (got fired maybe) and 3 new engineers came to work, came upon his notes at his desk but did not realize that all 200 were just a list of a few to put into the machine...so they put them all in the V3i and made the most awesome machine ever made.

@Ytcoinshooter - I remember you! ehehh Thanks. How have your VDI's been on deeper targets? I know now to dig the jumpier ones (in our soil). They may really really jump, but the good sound will be there. Huge respect for?

Wow this looks like a lot of tweaking. With the FBS technology of the Minelab you would think it would be worse but all you do is hold the coil 12" above the ground for 15 seconds and it nulls any of the 28 frequencies that show problematic EMI. Then you set your sensitivity just below the background chatter or set it to auto and you are done....quiet as a mouse over clean ground and will reach 12" deep and then some. Are the things you're doing here required for each hunt area or are you just trying to super fine tune it? I'm asking because I have considered the V3i as a backup to my E-TRAC and this looks like a lot of fiddling instead of searching. I am not trying to compare the two I am just perplexed by this video.

I think once you get proficient with the V3i you just need 2 minutes at a site to get the machine slightly tweaked. (Mostly for GB). I gave up the machine as I don't go much anymore and the E-Trac, in MY ground, was noticeably deeper and just so easy and (more) fun to use. (Love those sounds). In light and clean ground the V3i probably goes deeper though. There certainly is that feeling when leaving a site of "Did I have my settings right." If you like tweaking then it is the machine to get, but if you just want to go out and hunt there are machines more suited to that, most actually... The video is basically a combination of what some experts have said regarding setting it up. I just put it all together as it was a fun learning experience at the time. Now I use an AKA Signum as it is slightly deeper than the E-Trac in my ground and lighter, but not quite as fun sound wise. Best of luck, EMS

Earthman Surfer OK that makes sense. Thanks. I'm interested in the V3i primarily for the polar plots. It looks like a great detector and those plots give an extra bit of information before digging. The sizing function is pretty nice looking but I don't get a lot out of that. I went out yesterday with a friend who has the V3i and he doesn't use the polar function. We were in an iron littered area (many old rusted roofing staples) and they were constantly coming in around 27/45 on the E-trac so I left them alone. I wanted to see those on the White's polar plot but I didn't press. I am still looking for a used one. It was interesting to use both detectors on each target and see what both of us thought before digging based on the two different detectors and styles. Both did very well in finding the targets consistently. I passed on the staples due to the high Fe reading. How does the V3i generally give you ferric information in conjunction with the VDI (I am used to both numbers with the Minelab)? Thanks for the videos.

PlanktoniusRex I remember the 3 frequency pinpoint to be my most useful feature. You can tell if it is a steel bottlecap for example by the way the different frequencies hit it. A quarter appears dominant in another color/frequency. I forget the specifics. The polar plot can also be very useful but I never used it as to me it was more for jewelry. Here in Europe coins are not as consistent as in the States. The E-Trac is awesome with steel bottle caps but not tops in iron (still good though.) The V3i, by just checking in pinpoint is generally close (but you still hear them.)

Thanks for tutorial, I'm new to the V3i. The weight of the machine surprised me also, I swapped the search coil to 6x8 SEF and run a RNB HP3100 battery pack. The machine feels more manageable.

Oh I live in virginia beach va. I am having major issues setting it up right for the beaches here and I have alot of false hits on empty holes. I do have salt on but it's not the best for the beach or how I'm setting it up. Thank u.

I'm new to this,I was thinking bout get'n the AT Pro,I'm in Northeast Pa. so i'll be hunting in the old coal towns, small streams and deep woods hope'n for old coins, jewelry and whatever else comes up,I will be finding my fair share of junk too so any advise will help. Tons of info on here. I'd like something easy to set up and run too,I got bout 6 to 8 to spend in my budget. Thoughts?? God speed! :)

+The Dean is in - I'm not so knowledgable on the newer machines. AT Pro is fairly well regarded but more in mixed situations (water). So, streams is one of them. I would check on the forums as I have not really detected in a looooong time. Sorry but good luck to you, Finds forum has a wealth of info there as does Tom Dankowski's site.

Thanks for this! Ive been playing with my v3i since november and this is clearing a lot up for me. Fox's setting work wonder for me. I still use my MXT pro with the detech ultimate coil when i start hunting a new spot but after ive dug what i can with the MXT i move in with the v3i and find stuff i missed. I just cant get over how slow it is! Happy hunting and thanks again!

Very good video presentation, but I would have liked more info on why to do it this way or that way and what the results will be. I see a lot of program how to change them, but nothing about why one would change them

@trofazz - Thanks Travis. Let me just add that I have worries about autotrack and getting optimal depth. So, if you get a V3i run autotrack vs locktrack on a deep target and find out what is best for your soil. And get those filters right!

I'm new to the v3i and I love it. I'm still confused with the ground filters and what they do and recovery delay settings. Plus I'm still learning a way to really tell a pull tab from a nickel. I'm 60 40 now but still dig pull tabs. Any pointers
@earthmansurfer2328

Ground filters adjust for your ground type. I haven't had the machine in years, so my strong suggestion is to check on the Whites forum. (I forget about pulltabs). Everything will be there! Great luck and enjoy the unit.

Dang, I didn't realize that I have limited space for comments. Put quite a bit in my first comment then posted only to find it truncated / cut most of it off! Anyway I'm sure at some point my previous thoughts will return! My huge respect comment regards the low gain (4-6 range) clear deep signals, no ground noise using the disc sense to drive it deep!

I rely on the sound for deeper targets. The spectra-graph helps, but the predominant bar in pinpoint has been a huge help. I can accurately tell aluminum from coins. Deep coin hit with jumpy vdi and a longest 7.5kHz pinpoint bar and I'll dig to verify the first few at a site. some turn out to be round tabs with the tail intact but folded over the center opening. Very cool. The analyze screen as u know isn't good for real deep ID'ing..but the pinpoint bars are very good. I have a couple more th

Great work there EMS to show people how to use the "onboard tools" as I like to call them. I've developed a good feel for setting up my V3i using them. Once someone understands the data from ground and sensitivity probes it is possible to dial in the filter without having to always test a buried target - (natural find of a coin like target 5" - 6" preferred) but helpful to do it. My soil reads the same as yours -91 to -94 and is usually around 3%. One thing I have gained huge respect for i

Thanks and glad it was helpful. Loved the machine but the weight was a bit much and my iron mineralized grounds caused it depth problems, so I no longer have the machine. Great machine though.

I'm probably miss understanding what you are saying here but maybe you could clarify please. You mention "Pulling settings together (4:35) as Fox told you" Did I hear that correctly? Who is Fox?
@earthmansurfer2328
@earthmansurfer2328 8 лет назад
IT has been years since I had that machine. But I think pulling things together just meant the settings work better after the ground balance. As for Fox, probably a great detectorist...

Any suggestions for a good teacher for the V3I? I just finished putting it together, out of the box, and I'm reading all the instructions. I'm realizing I'm a bit over my head with respect to info overload. Seems like a rough learning curve. Guess that's what I get for starting a new hobby at 70 years of age. Senior moment(s) Thanks so much for pointing me in a positive direction.

Well, you picked a doozy of a machine to start with but I started with a Nautilus IIB! Go to both Finds and the Whites forum. Best experts are there. My videos go through the settings fairly well. Test the soil with a buried coin before you hunt it (every time, even the same spots). Keep the settings not to complicated. Good luck

Find what works best for your soil and work around that. The filters and such should rarely change at the same location (unless conditions really change.)
