This doesn’t take into account that we now know ball pythons are semi arboreal and that their diet consists of mostly birds when they are young and that the males tend to continue to hunt birds in the trees as a main food source (70% of their diet). Females become heavier as they age and, with the added weight, eventually start hunting more small mammals on the ground. Try adding ample climbing opportunities to your enclosure and you’ll see your ball python climb and assume an arboreal hunting position when it’s hungry. We also now have heating elements that provide better sources of heat than heat mats. Heat mats only produce infrared C (IRC) waves and you want a source that provides IRA and IRB because they penetrate muscle to warm the snake instead of just heating the skin. Providing UVB has also been show to spike the vitamin D levels of captive snakes, which is indicative of them having low levels to begin with. Providing UVB can help rectify this.
