When you hear Benny play, you just want to greb your sticks ;)

Indeed! So many other guys are discouraging to watch, but Benny is the opposite for me.

this is actually a really cool idea for a video series, as a drummer growing up I always tried to closely mimic drummers set ups like this.

I'm planning a Dave Weckl one as well as soon as I can get to it. This was more popular than I anticipated. Thanks for watching!

I prefer Benny Greb's old set-up way back when he had upside down splashes on top of his crashes and his signature Meinl Trash Hat were still used as is. Not his current set-up with lots of stacks all over. IMO only.
@TheMike23md
@TheMike23md 7 лет назад
Benny has the 18" Sand Crash, 20" Sand Ride and a 22" Sand Crash/Ride with 3 Rivets. His stack is 2 18" vintage trash crashes. His Hi hat has the 14" trash hat bottom and he uses the 14" trash hat top under the 18" sand crash

Thanks for the list. Since I'm not a Meinl guy, I was just going for similar sounds for the cymbals. Take care.

Redeye Percussion Do you tape your sticks?
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 7 лет назад
I use a band of black tape on my sticks. The contrast with the stick color helps the cameras focus and makes it easier to see the stick movement in the videos. I actually do this even when I'm not recording now because I've gotten used to the look. Thanks for watching!

When you hit drum on 4:10 i was pretty sure you'd start playing Loot by Jojo Mayer)))

Nice! I was unfamiliar with that tune, but now that I've listened to it, I see what you mean. Jojo is a monster groove machine. Take care!

Man... SO GLAD I found this video. Because I've been trying to figure out what he's doing to get that "dead" 10" sound. Arthur Hnatek has a similar effect on his 12". Overtones are muted.

His tom sound is amazing. Before I saw him live, I thought it was mostly due to processing, but his kit sounds exactly like that in person as well. Coated Emperors over Coated Ambassadors with one Vater Buzz Kill gel on the small tom and there you have it. I've started tuning by mounted toms like this all the time. It's a great sound.
@hombreenojado
@hombreenojado 7 лет назад
Definitely an interesting and unique sound. It seems to let you lay into the tom without over powering.
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 7 лет назад
That's exactly how I feel about it. You definitely have to start with a good drum and a very even tuning so that it resonates a bunch, then when you muffle it, it still has a great tone, but the decay is just very short.

Thanks! I saw him last year and have become obsessed with his latest setup, hence the video. I'm really glad you liked it.

Thanks! I really love that sound with the Jungle crash on top. I set up one with my 15" sometimes. Unfortunately I can never find a use with my cover band, so I have to use them for videos only. Take care!

@7:20 Benny has a 22" Byzance Sand Crash/Ride with Rivets. Not sure if he has a 20" Crash Ride in that size. What I do know is he has his signature 20" Byzance Sand Ride on the other hand.

When I recorded this 6 years ago, only the original Sand Ride had been released.

awesome video, quick tips for the snare and this may work for 14 inch snares with 8 lugs. he tunes the batter side medium and takes the two tension rods closest to him and gives those a couple of turns tighter or looser depending on what sound he wants. that bit on the ft was great it sounds just like his.
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 7 лет назад
Thanks for the kind words! I think I saw that video where he explains the snare trick. I'll have to try it out next time I'm doing something with this setup. Take care!

Hi, when you talk about the 2nd snare & Benny using a fat snare accessory in a video he made for Drumeo, it looks to me like he has laid a regular drum head upside down on the 2nd snare, I think I can see the aluminium hoop resting ontop of the drum hoop. Any thoughts? Thank you :)

The 18" stack and sizzle crash made me jealous. I have a couple cracked cymbals I want to replace soon. I'll definitely look into Saluda. They look great and sound great.
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 7 лет назад
Saluda has some great cymbals at well below the price you pay for Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste, or Meinl stuff. If you get anything from them, please tell them Shane from Redeye Percussion sent you. Good luck!

Damn - I swear I responded to this last week, but I can't find it now. Sorry. That side snare is a PDP Concept Maple, 14x6. It was $250 I think. Here's a full video with that snare ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Eu_7j3Whz5I.html Thanks for watching!

You can't call it Greb kit as long as you don't have flat angled 12" tom in front of you bro:)
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 3 года назад
He uses a 10" there and I explain the angle in the video, being that he is 6'4" or something, and I'm 5'8" and can't reach it. :)

Not that this matters but doesn't Benny use beech drums not birch?

Thanks! That is much appreciated. I wasn't happy with myself when I was editing the video and realized I said the wrong thing there, when I clearly knew better. Not the worst mistake, but still disappointing. Take care!

Just an FYI, Benny's snare is tuned way higher than what you are showing here.

Thanks! I did kind of skip the snare tuning and only mentioned the toms. My bad.

Why set up your drums like Benny Greb?
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 7 лет назад
It's a really fun setup to play around or solo with. I can see something like this working with a folk/rock jam band. For general use, though - rock, country, pop stuff it's not the most versatile setup. The big issue is gap between the 10" and 16" toms.
@Roberto_Zaffaroni
@Roberto_Zaffaroni 7 лет назад
To me the cool thing about drums is that there are no rules. Everyone is free to set up the kit according to his personality. Some limits are dectated by the context you are involved, anyway is Interesting to analyze the masters ;)
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 7 лет назад
I am an equipment junkie, so I like to analyze different setups and find out why different drummers include things on their set. I rarely change what I'm doing because of it, but it's fun to study. I'm trying to get together a Dave Weckl version of this later. Thanks for watching!

just use your 20. look up benny. he uses different kickdrums in studio and home situations. nobody cares 😆.sound comes first
@RedeyePerc
@RedeyePerc 7 лет назад
If I were doing just an audio recording, I would certainly take any kind of Frankenstein-like kit to get the best sound, but this was just a demonstration, so I went with the best look here. I also think that with a kick drum, the mic, mic placement, and processing make as much difference as the actual drum. Thanks for watching!

I did see him live last year at a clinic. The picture at 1:25 is the kit he used for the clinic. Any differences in my setup due to not owning the exact same sized cymbals are explained in the video as I go along.
