How to set up your NET with a WAIST PACK

How you set you net up is important. If you wear a waist pack, it can be a little difficult finding an efficient and comfortable solution. Efficiency is important when fighting your fish and comfort is important as you don't want it to poke, be in the way, or weigh you down.
My do-it-yourself solution helps with all of these. I'll show you exactly how I do it with my Frabill 18x13 hoop net, but this can work with any net of your choice.
Hope it helps and tight lines!

Hey Cory! Over the years I’ve tried countless pack/net setups. I think I have finally settled on a fishpond cross current chestpack and I attach my net retractor to the loop on the pack and I have a magnet on my wading belt to capture the net.I still need to settle on a rig up for my big net on big water . Thanks for the advice. Yesterday I went with a guide dry fly fishing in small streams. Caught so many fish but all little 12-15 inch fish. Browns and bows. But today I went on my own. I tried to repeat what I learned the first day. But instead I had the most amazing day fishing a 2 km stretch dry fly fishing (in Australia) upstream and then euronymphing the same stream downstream. I caught all the 14 inch juveniles on the way up and only caught 3 fish on the way down. The thing is I only had a 5 wt. My 3 wt couldn’t fit in my suitcase. I live in HK. Anyway I caught a 3 inch tiny one, then a 28 inch monster that I believe was about 3.2 kg brownie. And a decent 20 inch rainbow. The big one I believe has been caught many times before and it knew what to do to get released. It fought only a little for a fish that size and then it couldn’t fit in the net but once there it stood still for me to take out the hook and let it go. I am thinking I wish I had done the nymphing on the way up. But the 5 wt is not anywhere near as sensitive as the 3 wt.

I use a similar rigging method for the same Frabill net. The paracord is a better solution to zip ties which eventually break. For those using zip ties, you can file the burr and cap it with a bit of UV resin to avoid the sharp issue, but paracord is a more permanent solution. A side-mount magnet like Corey uses is great for keeping the net positioned where you want it, and the retractor allows you to drop the net when needed.

Great advice. I use the same net retractor and attach it to the back of my lanyard but find it pulls the lanyard down my back and makes accessing the lanyard difficult and uncomfortable. I will change to your suggestion and attach it to the back of the wader strap. I have a pacemaker and defibrillator now after a cardiac arrest on my last Canadian fishing trip so try not to use magnets as they react with the devices. I'll just have to devise a magnet substitute for the wader belt. Kindest regards from down under in NZ.

Cory, quick question. I bought the net retractor & magnet. I use a vest & will probably connect the net retractor on a D ring on my vest back or add it to my suspenders & add the magnet to my wader belt as you described . I’m a lefty so I’d be working on the right arm to use my net. Thoughts? Don’t know about you but fishings been pretty slow for the last 4 weeks. Tony
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Год назад
Hey Tony-it will definitely work with the D-ring on your vest and the magnet on your right side of your belt. It will be much easier to grab your net when it is attached right there as opposed to hanging straight down off your back. Weather has been warm one week and cold the next-makes for big fluctuating temps and trout just can't settle in. It will bust out soon!

Thanks for talking about the net problem with hip packs. No one ever does. The other issue with placing the net in the pack slot - is that the net gets in the way when you slide the pack to your side or front when trying to access it. I like your solution - BUT, what do you do when you’re wet wading? Ie: no waders to attach the net to ?

Quick question, when attaching the para cord to the handle, is it just layed against the handle on both sides forming a loop on the end and wrapped with the hockey tape to hold it in place? or it it somehow attached before the tape is applied? Thanks,
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Год назад
Bryan, I’ll use some tape to hold a length of 8-10lb mono on the bottom of the handle towards the basket. Then use the mono and spiral it up to hold the paracord in place (which is laid on both sides of the handle) Tape it at the top. Once in place, tape it nice and tight with the hockey tape. Hope this makes sense.
