In this episode I’ll run through how to correctly set your harness lines to be more efficient with your body weight and not fight the rig. Then with your harness lines correctly set you can tack more efficiently and make ground up wind quicker.
This episode linked with a playlist series where I looked in more details how to set your harness lines and the feelings you should have.
And another where I look through tacking!

@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
Thanks Carlos. I think I mentioned it in this video how to set your lines Length. From the point of your elbow in the line you should be able to have a loose grip on the beam. This should feel quite long - this is the point - keeping the rig well away from you not very bent squirrel like arms! Thanks for subscribing, and stay tuned for more videos regularly!

Thanks Russell! Not as specifically as you're asking, but a number of the videos around August last summer the first 5mins or so I'm adjusting the lines... thats the key bit to it- you can NEVER set the lines correctly on the land- you must adjust them and play with them. Keen the loops around the boom loose enough that they can be moved with one hand grabbing and sliding them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nBdWc6EUX-k.html

I find myself coming back to your videos as I progress! I've noticed that I'm having a hard time staying on the plane when commiting to the harness. Always skewing upwind and loosing the power. Could it really be such an easy fix as to just move the harness lines further back? Noticing this on my severne ncx 6.5 for example, where I've used the fist count method for harness line position.
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! Party kit set up- lines back may help, but chances are when you commit to the harness your weight goes to the back foot- hence the shooting into the wind.drive through the front to hold your course.

Hi Cookie! Awesome videos! I took a long break from windsurfing, while I was at the stage of using the footstraps for the first time. I believe correct harness placement helps get in the footstraps? Would you recommend different harness lines settings for people like me who are just learning to get in the footstraps but not quite there yet? Since our placement on the board is more forward - perhaps this means harness lines should also be more forward?
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
Hi! Thanks for watching, really glad you found it useful! Setting the sail and harness correctly will make a big difference on success in general- so if getting into the step is the goal then yes- this'll really help! To answer your question.. 9 out of 10 people have their lines too far forward- i think it's a comfort thing- the further back you go the more power in the sail (as it sheets in more), people tend to not like that much so put them forward. Getting them back will give you more power and allow you to sail closer to the wind... then get into the straps without tones of speed or rattling off downwind!

I have recently tried some tacks and got some issues... I'm opting you can give some tips to avoid them! 😆 So harnest and footstaps, front hand on mast. Getting upwind... Then needs to remove foot from straps. This is a first difficultiy, since while riding, Im deep on the straps, it's kinda hard to remove foot from straps while keeping the board flattish... The second problem is right after: getting feet in front of mast. Most of the time there, the board would "drown" since my sail is set on the farther front of the board rail. So when needs to go thru the wind is difficult and then getting on the other side is also challenging. I think I apply too much pressure on front feet, but don't know how to avoid it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again for the great instructions, getting better every time! 😃
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
Thanks for the comments, let’s see if I can help.... Firstly the entrance- if your feet are getting stuck try taking the back foot out whist in the harness still, loosen your front foot in the straps in preparation, then front hand to the mast and drive up wind. Good prep to ensure success. The transition- practice on big boards and light winds. Practice one the land without a sail. It sounds like your feet are slow, we need quick feet to get round the mast and onto the new side! Hope that helps!

@marcosgallodgp 4 года назад
Cool video Cookie! thanks for the tips! Do you think that rigging your sail differently would change the lines position? since the pressure point in the sail changes? Thanks
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 4 года назад
Hi Marcos, 100% the rigging of the sail will affect where the lines go. More/less outhaul/downhaul will move the centre of effort (the pull) around the sail and therefore you'll need to more your lines to match it. Thats easily why I'm saying that counting hands and balancing the sail pre-launch doesn't really work. How much you weigh, or how you like the feel of the sail will also affect it, someone heavier than me may out them slightly further back as the weight of the sailor can hold a little more power. Someone with less skill/control will want them further forward as they won't yet like, or know how to control the power. As a generalised rule i find many people have them too far forward. The next video I'll be releasing is all about front hand control- only way you can do this is by having you lines correctly set- which will likely mean moving them backwards!
@marcosgallodgp
@marcosgallodgp 4 года назад
Ride-Along Windsurf Coaching with Cookie! Make sense! One thing I always feel is that when the wind gets stronger I get the pull on the back hand therefore I will have to move them a little back but then if the wind dies a bit I get the pull in the front hand again ( it gets confusing when the wind is gusty and unstable) Can’t wait for your next video! :D
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 4 года назад
Marcos Gallo your are right, the pull will move around a little through lighter/stronger winds. I find that is One reason why a lot of people have their harness lines too far forward- they are set correctly for light winds and non-planing winds- but when the power kicks in they don’t want to move them. I find in a session I will be make a few small adjustments to the lines- Get them what feels correct, then something changes and I may need to move them again. Even through this video it felt like I had them correct, then I changed tack and adjusted them again. Keep them loose enough that you can move them. They won’t slide by accident, but means you don’t have to stop and undo all the Velcro straps or whatever holds them on!

Thank you so much for these videos. As a beginner rider i appreciate your effort ! How many kgs are you and what sail did you use for that kind of wind ?
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
Hi Andreas, Thanks for the complaints, really glad you're enjoying these videos. I weight around 80kg, if I remember right this video was filmed in around bft4, on a 133lt board and a 5.5m sail. However, it's worth noting that there is not a black and white answer for wind=kit, there are a lo of variable to take into account. - Water state (flat or wave) - Water current (tide V wind, or any sort of moving water). - Water location (coastal salt or inland fresh) - Air temperature, colder air with give more power- warm bft 4 in Greece won't give as much power as a cold northerly in the UK. - Boards size - Board type - Fin size - Personal skill - Personal weight - Riggings of the sail!... I could go on to be honest; but the easiest way to show this is on any given day at your local spot you will have some people happily powered up on a 4m sail, and other people happily powered up on 6-7m sails! You need to find and test you own kit to know what works best for you! Thanks again for watching!

@@Cookiesports Im 79kg and im trying to figure out what gear to buy in order to avoid buying the same thing twice...for example buy now a 430 rdm mast and six moths later be forced to buy another one, bigger or smaller. Thanks though for answering ! This vids are gold !
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
Hi! So I should start by managing your expectations a little. You're just starting your journey into an epic windsurf life. You'll spend days looking at the forecast and working out when to take time off work and head to the beach! You'll also by buying, selling, renting and swapping gear throughout your windsurf career! I'm afraid it's not a buy once and that will do kind of sport! However, few things to consider... Sails- you'll need two at least, as you improve and want to be ready for more conditions you'll think about buying more. Aim for 0.5-1m between each sail in you quiver. Masts will fit various sails with a big of a cross over, for example the Severne Gator will rig 5.3-6.0m on a 430 mast or a 400 mast will rig a 4.5-5.7m Gator. Boards- a little easier to understand I think... you'll have begun on a 180-200 later board, as you improve you'll want smaller. Stick with renting until you are onto 140-150ish, then think about buying. You'll be looking for an all-round free-ride board, Fanatic Geko, Starboard GO, RRD Evolution or similar. Anything with the words "fast" or "race" or "performance" will be rapid on the water and much harder to control. Hope that helps get you started?!

@@Cookiesports Hey dude , first of all thanks for taking all this time to reply to me ... I've had some lessons and now indeed im waiting a fanatic gecko 133 to arrive to my city in order to check it out and buy it. I've already bought a 6.0 freeride by Gunsails and i think , if the board doesnt have one , I'll need a 35 cm fin . My goal for now in the long run is to enter the slalom world...i was never into waves and freestyle so i think I'll be sticking with my speed addiction ..just trying to determine what gear would make the journey cheaper if all the hard work is of course invested
