For those saying the tank isn't safe, doesn't have enough room, etc. Take a moment to breathe, and consider the following points: 1. Substrate: Topsoil, and even a 50/50 mix of sand and topsoil are safe for beardies once they are about 6-7 inches or larger. 2. insects: Springtails and Isopods will NOT bite your beardie. The superworms and darkling beetles CAN, but with the leaf litter, and biodegradable items, they have their preferred meal. 3. Space: While beardies DO enjoy room to move, most of them also enjoy climbing, burrowing, and overall exploring. Dense wood and plant-life, with plenty of climbing room not only allows them room to move, but gives them the ability to feel safe and secure. 4. Humidity: Contrary to popular belief, your typical bearded dragon (Pogona Vitticeps) does not live in sand dunes and rocky outcrops. They live in the brushlands of Australia. I will leave an image link below to their natural habitat. This environment has a natural humidity of around 50% in the flora, allowing the dragon to get its water from licking dew from the plant life. 5. Plants: All of the plants that Josh is using are safe for the dragon to eat, safe for the insects to eat, and contribute to aesthetics. While these plants are not native to the natural environment of the dragon, this doesn't matter much. Links to Pogona Vitticeps natural habitat: www.abc.net.au/news/image/9798660-3x2-940x627.jpg www.bobinoz.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/central-australia1.jpg i.pinimg.com/originals/ef/50/8c/ef508cae88611e2abfb9d448528a4320.jpg

Matthias there is a reason why animals live longer in captivity. Predators are everywhere in the wild so that’s always a constant fear. Your eggs will most likely get eaten by something so you’ll need to live long enough to mate again to have a chance at continuing your genes. And just a lot of other things that can happen. Honestly if I was a bearded dragon I would prefer to live in captivity and not the wild

It can, without proper ventilation, for planted bioactive desert tanks, I personally think you should be using a small exhaust fan.. you can also put substrate under a layer of clay, the clay locks in the moisture you can carve little holes for your plants and you can have a watering hole with pvc in it in the corner of the tank to keep the substrate damp under the clay, but the clay will stay dry...

Oh my god, that looks absolutely amazing. The opuntia spp. add the perfect touch to an enclosure, giving it that desert vibe. 🌵 Thinking of purchasing one from your webstore for my Western Hognose, would this be a hazard for him since cacti usually have spikes?

Looks amazing! But I question the amount of space left for the dragon with SO much stuff in there. And Megaray UVB mercury vapor bulbs are the only good UVB bulbs with the correct amount of UVB combined with heat. Just saying..
@AMunday1988
@AMunday1988 7 лет назад
Richard Gibbs so wrong!! Mercury vapor bulbs are horrible. The only uvb bulb tested and proven to provide the correct amount of uvb is the reptisun 10.0 bulb.
@jackburton307
@jackburton307 7 лет назад
Do some research. The Zoo Meds reptisun T5-HO 5.0 and 10.0 are the ONLY good UVB fluorescent bulbs that has optimal levels of UVB. Their T8's are not good. The problem with reptisun's, or any fluorescent bulbs is their UVB degradates very quickly and they offer no heat. The ONLY good UVB mercury vapor bulb is the MegaRay. And it is MUCH better than the reptisun T5 strip bulbs. Better UVB levels that do not degrade quickly and they provide heat. No comparison. Ask yourself, where do reptiles spend most of their time - do they spend most of their time basking under their heat lamp or on the other side of the cage where the fluorescent light is located? They spend most of their time basking, soaking up heat, and therefore it is very important that their basking spot has BOTH heat and UVB. And the only way you can effectively do this is with a mercury vapor bulb, and the only good mercury vapor bulb is the MegaRay. Fluorescent lights offer no heat and are on the other side of the cage, away from the basking heat. Reptiles spend very little time under them. The only real thing fluorescent lights are good for is to light up the other side of the cage.

@jackburton307
@jackburton307 7 лет назад
The Zoo Med Power Sun mercury vapor bulbs are better than their Reptisun fluorescent bulbs, but they still do not produce the required amount of UVB needed. Trust me on the MegaRay mercury vapor bulbs. They are currently the only bulbs with the correct amount of UVB.

But the bearded dragon's in the pet trade come from southern Australia where it's slightly dessert and slightly forest the true dessert dwelling dragon is the Northern bearded dragon unfortunately those aren't sold in the pet trade. So 40-50% humidity is required for bearded dragon's found in the pet trade not this 20-36% that everyone keeps saying, the low humidity levels can cause shed to get stuck and it makes more difficult for your dragon to remove the shed
@sarahallen1900
@sarahallen1900 5 лет назад
If they have proper rubby items that never happens, our beardie stays at about 10-20‰ humidity and has never had an improper shed, however we made sure his water dish is large enough for him to bathe his entire body in and when he feels like it he will spend his time hanging out in his water dish, but he has never had an improper shed and he is 4 years old now, we got him as a baby

I have a very important question because I very much would like to do this for my beardie. But I have to know: what do you do for your bearded dragon when they go into brumation? Would the tank explode with over growth with the plants/insects?
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter 4 года назад
It can, you will need to ensure that you maintain it as if he/she was not brumating. Usually it gives your terrarium time to regroup being how destructive they are : )

@TheBioDudeJoshHalter

Hi, Nakkimo - Not all springtails and isopods like it moist. They are found from all over the world...So I use species that like it dry with those setups.
@nakkimo
@nakkimo 7 лет назад
The Bio Dude Josh Halter can you give me the scientific names of these species?
@HUNTENMASTA1337
@HUNTENMASTA1337 7 лет назад
he has some on his website two being the giant white springtails and the large silver springtails. both do fine in the moist middle and bottom layers of the terra sahara. and there are other kinds of springtails that can handle temperate conditions and you can put a tropical mix kind of layer of substrate on the bottom layer for springtails that require a little more moisture. really if you do some research you'll find you have a lot of options.

I tired putting vanilla I'm the tank, didn't work....i now tried dryer sheets, but I'm not home to see if it works but if it doesn't then I'm going to have to take apart the vivarium :( I really don't want to though.
