These settings over-ride those for 'align_mag' setting and allow for mags that are not flat. Any non zero value in ANY of these settings will override the compass alignment defaults. Measurement is on 0.1 degree increments i.e. 3600 is 360 degrees. The settings that worked on this specific GPS and compass unit in this orientation were:
set align_mag_roll = -200
set align_mag_pitch = 1800
set align_mag_yaw = 2700

Great helpful tip. Thanks Lee. Timely as was trying to setup a new gps with integrated compass on my Flywoo Explorer this last weekend, and like you was confused. Can confirm this works. 😃👍 Originally was setting the offset as -10º, as compass(and integrated gps) is mounted at tilt -20º in pitch. Was thinking better to use "average angle" between when quad would be level (in hover) and assuming 20º pitch forward in normal flight. However, after watching this it sounds like the offset is the difference between the FC (INAV) orientation and the GPS/compass orientation. So compass alignment should be set at -20º.

Excellent discussion as it was not intuitive at first. Thinking of the perspective of the compass chip orientation, it makes sense that the roll is -20 degrees for this drone model. Seriously considering getting the Rekon 7 LR with DJI air unit and using INAV

Tip: If you cannot figure this out, especially on a board with atypical magnetometer placement (with no directional markings), use XYZ mode in INAV magnetometer tab (new thing) and look up datasheet for that magnetometer (note the dot in a corner). Write down that orientation with XYZ arrows on a paper and match it with your magnetometer (rotate the paper) and then match it again in INAV. Next do the compass calibration and it should be working.

I found the explanation to this in RCgroups back in July when, like you, I'd spent hours fiddling and somehow got it working by trial and error. The acid test after all this is point drone North, East, South and West - does it display the correct headings? Then invert drone and test again, does it STILL display correct headings? If it does you got it right, if not start again 🤣

Hi Lee. I'm having a hard time with this because, in my case, I had to rotate the FC in 180º now, the instructions say the alignment has to be relative to the FC but does the values and alignment shown in the setup tab match the actual quad orientation or the FC? Thanks in advance
@Painless360
@Painless360 9 месяцев назад
The only difference should be in the FC orientation settings in INAV. Once they are set then everything else is the same. This is why I always strongly suggest mounting the FC in the intended orientation, as it avoids all of these questions. Best of luck with it

Surely that angled GPS/MAG mount is so that when the quad is in forward flight it becomes level, So can we not just, when rotating the quad during compass calibration, angle the quad so as to keep the GPS/MAG level ?
@Painless360
@Painless360 2 года назад
Try it. I did for 3 weeks. Lots about this didn't quite make senses. It seems to be the relationship of the compass to the FC you are setting up.. Happy flying!
@riddles551
@riddles551 2 года назад
Is it just that the accelerometer in your FC was mounted at 90 degree about yaw and so the pitch axis became the roll axis? Also would be great to know if you set the mag align to 180 deg flip, does the direction of yaw become inverted (i.e. does a positive 20 deg yaw increment relative to the FC now become a negative 20 adjustment in the cli since, because the mag has been flipped about pitch, the positive direction of yaw relative to the mag is now negative)
@Painless360
@Painless360 2 года назад
Nothing to do with that. It's the relative orientation to the flight controller. Best of luck

@@Painless360 so, if inav reports the FC being pitched forward by a couple of degrees when the drone itself is on a flat surface, should we add those degrees of pitch to the mag alignment?

I have attached an HMC5883 compass to my SpeedyBee F405 v3 flight controller, which is running the INAV7 firmware. The firmware successfully detected the compass. I calibrated the compass using the INAV7 configurator, simply by selecting the "calibrate compass" option and keeping the drone steady. However, I've noticed an issue: when I rotate the drone and observe the drone's depiction on the setup tab in INAV7, the image also rotates, but it does so at a significantly slower pace. It also takes a considerable amount of time to match the actual drone's changed heading. What could possibly be the issue here?
