what i like to do in my bioactive breeding bins is add a bowl of water and place a piece of homemade lumpwood charcoal into it... it is a good place for springtails to breed on as it always will be humid at that spot and it gives the roaches something to hold onto while drinking so they don't drown. plus it might absorb some unwanted chemicals from the water overtime...
Excellent points! Great video. I think you've covered everything. I have tried many, many feeds and find their favorite, and healthiest seems to be grown chicken feed.
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS I have the opportunity to have 3 big bins going currently and find this is by far their favorite out of about a dozen foods I've fed.
I laughed when I heard "kinetic heat" but I can see the logic thinking about it. Passive heat would be more accurate I think. Great video thanks for the info
Would it be worth starting a colony for just 1 bearded dragon? I’m assuming if the colony got too big I could start feeding off more females but I wasn’t sure if I’d just have too many
Imo it's worth it because you can probably trade them for store credit at a local reptile shop. Plus it's good to have an emergency supply if a pet store is out of stock and sometimes people might buy them from you directly.
Great vid, ive tried breeding dubia but it failed for me for a few reasons i think, roaches were feeders from pet shop, i tried through winter, my place isnt that warm and i put heat mat on the side rather than bottom, there was only about 15 roaches in total, should of got a mix box for breeding. I just gave up and kept them as pets till i fed them off 🤣. Oh and i dont have reptiles for there heat either
i got quite a few dubai’s from my dads friends colony and the bit he gave me already had larva in it so i’m hoping i’ll have my own colony in do time:)
Btw if you get the water Cristals and just keep adding water they grow way more than what you start off with I started off with probably about an 8-ounce bag and now I have about a gallon or two of it just by adding more and more water
I like to use substrate instead of just plastic as ground because I have dermestid beetles and I think I have about 3,000 inside the tub and about 250 nymphs and I put the egg crates upright so that I don’t have to keep replacing them so often and I put some water crystals and dubia diet in their enclosure and their population exploded but I use a heat lamp of course with a thermostat so I went with a little bit of an expensive route but it’s been working since last year
NORTHERN EXOTICS I mean it’s at a constant 30 degrees Celsius and it’s clamped to the right side of the tub looking down on the egg crate so I don’t think it’ll burst the egg crate into flames
Hey i have a question, every night my dubia roaches climb on the highest point of the enclosure, they jump and hit the lid as if they are trying to escape, i dont get why, they have darkness they have egg cartons and i give them a different variety of food everyday.. does it happen to you?
Ok so you said give em oranges, this is bad if you have geckos and bearded dragons. When a roach eats oranges and is feed to a dragon it turns into folic acid and dragons cant process it and will eventually kill your dragon.
I have 2 bearded dragons and I want to start my own colony to save money on live food. How many females and how many males should I get to have enough to feed my dragons. Mine are eating medium roaches now
Would you feed your non-dog pet, dog biscuits?? No?? So why tf are you feeding your feeders dog biscuits????? You just making content for views and don't really care about the value of what you are proposing. I give my bugs NOTHING but the fruits and veggies i would give my animals.. Thats called "common sense"
Most fruit and veg go in the bugs and out of the bugs faster then there body can absorb nutrition . Plus no protein in fruit or veg. How do you expect a bearded dragon to get protein if your not giving him any?
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS the bugs mate the f*****n bugs have protein in them. Gut loading is a thing because its real. What you put into your feeders goes into your animal. Which is why we give the bugs healthy food like potatoes, oranges, grapes, mustard greens, etc. Dog biscuits arent even healthy for a dog bro. And ALL fruit and veggies have protein even if its just small amounts. You really should do more research. You have a decent following base. You should be EDUCATING them and not INFLUENCING them. Ok i have to mention this
Maybe rewatch the video. It does state the food is for the dubias to get a better reproduction and to gitload using reptile systems insect food for a week before feeding them off
A quick search result says "Dog biscuits are a hard, dry, dog food product, typically composed of protein, carbohydrates, fat, and fiber. " The bag displayed in the video also says, the dog biscuits have other vitamins and minerals as well. The roach chow that the video shows, clearly also has other food besides only ground-up dog biscuits. And the video says it uses other types of fodo as well, not just dog biscuits. So I don't understand why you're going all up in arms about this.
No. I never filmed that because that took months lol. Check out my Savannah monitor care video. That runs through the soil mix used. I've got a big boa build coming up soon which is the same process
I know this is true for a fact in meal worms and superworms but never heard itt in dubia roaches. And you shouldn't be scared. The reaction is the same as hay fever and lasts 2 days
wow i commented on a different one of your videos about females laying eggs and i just learned from this video that they give birth, im learning so muchhhh
Have u ever came across a female dubia with super thin wings? I ask because I have 1 that looks like a female with wings but it looks like almost like moth wings almost.
Hi, I would like to know one thing so you said something about the container. So basically it has to be see through correct? Sorry if my grammar isn't great.
NORTHERN EXOTICS they work but it’s setup in UK POUNDS we use USD here so we can’t purchase the stuff we can view it and everything just the same but the money payments and stuff are UK money not US currency
I now have 5 male and 4 female dubia roach with around 40 more to shed. The males haven't started fighting yet. Should I remove 3 or 4 of them just in case or keep an eye on them? How soon before they can start breading? You said you remove your babies once a month. How old do the babies have to be or can you remove them as you see them? Sorry for all the questions. I really enjoy watching your videos!
These can easily be your main staple for your chameleon as long as they are fed a lower protein diet as feeding high protein to the dubias can cause gout in the reptile if fed regularly. But if they are fed well they are one of the best feeders for most insectivore reptiles
I want to start my new hobby with dubia farm, to have a lot of them, when I'll have my pet, so my question is, should I buy heater mat or place them near to the radiator in my room?
i guess both would work but with a heat mat you can control the temperature better, which is important, because if the temperature gets too low or too high, they get stressed out and won't breed as prolifically
@@otpyuumi yeah, they're most likely not going to breed. If they do, then they're most likely not going to produce much offspring, so you should definitely use a heat mat and set it somewhere between 28 and 32 °C
I got 5 males and like 30 females still waiting for somebody to get pregnant I got a heat mat on one end I got veggies and greens and water crystals on the other end got egg crates on the warm side got a dark plastic bin with tiny air holes drilled on top and a screen for the floor so their poop falls through to another plastic bin that has a puppy pad so it’s nothing to clean up but they’re still not producing do I just wait?
How long have they been adults, takes about 2 weeks after final moult to become sexually mature. Then pregnant for a month before first litter pops out. Female will absorb the babies is she feels the environment isn't good enough to substain the babies. Check humidity. Temps and amounts or both dry and moist food . There the common reasons a female won't lay
If i dont have a heat source, should i get a heat pad? What about one of those temp gauges? I live in America and its usually at least 75 degreee roughly in my apartment. I will have them in a closet though and its gonna be probably about 80 degree at least
I have a couple of questions: What's the optimal temperature and humidity for breeding? And how do you separate the young ones into the smaller container? I imagine they're not the easiest to grab.
One way is to get the piece of egg carton or whatever they're hiding on, and put it in the baby container. Adults are easier to pick up so get them out of the baby container.
First I think love this video. I think I'm going to order some hissing cockroaches so hopefully they will breed but I'm kinda liking the look of dubia's..... so now I've got 3 BABY GALS and some roaches to come. Hopefully reptiles will be in the line-up too ❤️🐌🦗 Love the editing as well. 😊
I've had hissers in the past as breeders and they bred good. But they can climb . I lost track of how many babies escaped. Even a year after I moved out the ex was still finding them haha
Hey! I only want to make a small colony for my 1 bearded dragon 🐉 how many females and males would you start with? I don't want to be overunned by too many 😂
He said the roach chow he made from grounded up dog food then he added stuff can’t remember what he added fiber of sorts but I also read dog food is high protein when given to the reptile and can cause gout so look into it
Honestly, I live in temps of 65-78 year-round (due to A/C and heat settings in the house), and I don't put any heat on them- they acclimated and now would likely be invasive if they got out; but, I don't heat them, and they're fine. I make sure they're in a black bin, with CLEAN egg crates (bought for this purpose so they have no toxins), and give them plenty of fresh food veggies and scraps and they love it and are breeding like crazy (I don't do oranges all the time, as it can give the lizards gout).
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS You're right. Most Foam insulation isn't supposed to be in contact with radiant heat. I'm building a cabinet too, but the inside is completely covered with heat resistant building materials and the foam insulation is outside of that.
Plz change that substrate on your bearded dragon tank. Thst is the worst you can have. He can eat it and it’s also very uncomfortable for them to step on.
Am I right in saying this video had wooden pellet? He's fully bioactive now how ever the pellet was vet prescribed due to a foot malfunction that took 4 years to fully recover from. He had 3 broken toes and claws in the ball of his pads. Please ask why he is on it instead of assuming you know it all and I know nothing. There is one thing we can't stand on this channel and it's Facebook bearded dragon bullies that think they know it all... We do not accept those sorts on this channel
NORTHERN EXOTICS I also hate those Facebook karans that think they know everything. I was not trying to be like thst, I was jsit making sure you knew about your bearded drsgon
