@@dionisflores3667 that looks like an Exo Terra 15g, I would suggest you go bigger with either a 40g or if you have the space, a 4'x2'x2' pvc. Your reptile will thank you and you can do so much more with it

Is it save if the heat mat is placed in the bottom? Or will the "belly heat" affect the air pockets in the substrate? I'm thinking if making my own snakes habitats bioactive the issue is I already have heat mats on the underside of the tank.

I read that you cant use dirt for kenyan sand boa tank, is this true?
@cthulhu3392
@cthulhu3392 5 лет назад
@@nyx6625 thats not true my friend. You can use dirt yes. But not normal powdery dirt or like potting soil. You want it to not be very fine. Its why sand does not work for them cuz they can get it packed into their noses or mouths. Ive had four very happy sand boas for 9 or so years now. 2 kenyan 1 rough scale and one indian. I find that they like a more "course dirt" if that makes sence? I also mix in a bit of the i think its zoomed "sand" wich is all just english walnut shell grains and some gravel mixed in make sure its on the smaller side of medium though. So not fish gravel but no larger than a nickel (canadian 10 cent coin) all mixed up and wetted down. My snakes all. Also have a complete dry area that they sit in too just incase they need to get out of the moister area where its all "silica grit" sand (can be substituted for the gravel and english walnut shell in the soil mix as well ;) ). A larger more course sand so as to avoid the problems smaller grits can pose. Never once has one of my four babies gotten sick and i find that the 2 kenyans and the rough scale actually enjoy hide caves. The only one who wont use them is my indian but thry get 3 eatch. Two in the normal area one in the sandy and they are all perfectly fine.

My only concern with the bioactive set-up is that, it would make it difficult for me to get my Kenyan Sand Boa. I love holding him once in a while but with this set-up with the plants and all, it will make it less easier for me to just get him from the substrate. We will see. I bought your Terra Sahara Bioactive Kit, Josh. Will let you know how it goes.

You should offer pre-cultured/bio-ed Sahara/Firma substrate bags that're already mixed with the bio shot, iso/arthro pods, and crustaceans/spring tails, as well as the sphag moss and some leaf litter and/or palm barks. That way people can just dump in the pre-mixed bags and then add a bag of sphag moss and leaf litter that's pre-mixed together also, and then decorate with a bag/box of cork bark (tubes and/or flats) and wood pieces (multiple types or a single type depending on the customer's preference or animal's needs) that are also pre-mixed together, and last the plants. Just an idea I had that I thought that I'd share with you, as a fellow small business owner, to help your business prosperity maybe, as people are just like the animals they/we keep and love options ;) haha.

The Bio Dude Josh Halter awesome man! I think it'd sell well for you. And also gain you new customers whom are beginner reptile enthusiasts, long time pet owners & collectors, as well as all those repti-'rents(like yourself) that prefer(and love building) bio set ups/vivariums for most or all of their cold blooded family member and/or having lots of various different kinds of setups for all sorts of creatures or a few setups each having a different aesthetic/look to them for one pet.... and even people who do tutorials or build bioactive vivariums for people, because a big bag premixed with all the stuff you need for the substrate that's totally(or 90%) ready to go will allow them to do exactly what we all truly LOVE to do with setups, which is spend time decorating and setting it up how you want it! Plus it makes things super easy for first time repti/amphibi owners that want to go this route(aka the best route/right way) and those people who build people setups/set their bioactive vivariums up for them or who do tutorials and/or demos on how to properly do one for beginners and first timers. I had originally thought of it for my son to be able to build one himself cause he loved the idea so much when I'd told him about a viv and wanted very much to help me set up our new ( to us ) beardy's tank that way, however he's only 5 and I noticed it was just a little difficult for him to mix all of the stuff up to make our dirt and also to finish our substrate with all the leaf litter and moss etc etc and to dig & plant the succulent and herbal even tho they were both smaller and we didn't have/use too much moss and leaves. Mixing up the dirt alone was just a lot for him and made him less interested in the setup part of it as the process went on, but when it had come time to decorate it up with the wood pieces and rocks and plants, he dove right back in wanting to set all of it up himself. And with both of us wanting to have at least one more tank for our girl Charlie, if not two, I'd had the idea of a premixed large bag of the substrate with everything that it needs blended together and in the correct amounts. That way I could just pour that in with him and then let him go to town with the decor. I then thought about other beginners much older than him of course, then clicked the tutorials and collections while watching your set up and show room videos. I'm curious tho...why is it exactly that the bugs don't survive, or would not survive, the shipping process if they were mixed in one of the 36qt bags along with all the other essentials & optionals(in certain blends)? And especially if you'd made up a huge batch of the substrate say a month or two prior and they'd had all their time to get settled and develop their colonies up to strong healthy levels and essentially ripened/cultured the substrate already? Wouldn't they be healthy and strong enough as well as supplied with more than enough food and nutrients and all that to be able to make it through a 2 to 5 day shipping period being all secured in their home strong and healthy with endless supplies of things to munch on? I can see where you were having the problem with them not surviving when they were going in those little plastic ramekins/condiment to go cups tho. I just think in the substrate that has been premixed and had its time to develop fully(or just about) they would be totally fine and would not be at risk of dying, but please let me know if I am wrong about that & how I'm wrong. I love to learn about stuff and gain lots of knowledge all the time. Also, I need springtails and isopods for my son's(and I's) beardy, however no one out here has them, except petco who sometimes once in a blue moon will have isos, but I'll never give that pos company one cent of my money. And I'd really like to support you as a fellow business owner and repti-lover and for all the work you do on these videos and all the rad quality products you offer to people(not to mention the awesome deals too), but wasn't able to get the little buggers thru your site.... Could we maybe set up an email chat and possibly do a single sale of them for my boy's dragon? I'm just a state and a half over from you too so priority flat rate shipping would get them out here to us in 2 days if it leaves there before the 1pm truck takes off...trick I learned in shipping my products to my customers and clients when I'd been trying to get their stuff to them faster than all of the other pomade companies and online retailers and so nothing would melt during the summer months when it's super hot

hinds the name sand boa that is not there natural habitat
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter 7 лет назад
Actually, yes it is. The "sand" is just a slang. If you look at the soil content and breakdown of Kenya and surrounding areas itself it is more of a rocky, sandy, dirt loam like soil consistency. But your right, it is not their natural habitat, their natural habitat is in fact, Kenya, which replicating in captivity is impossible but this is pretty close to their actual biome content. Which in my opinion is much better than straight up sand (which i discuss in the video).
